Thomas King, Joshua Ferris and
Elyse Friedman will appear in
Banff for a discussion on Creative
Identities, and Kate Pullinger
and Adam Sternbergh will be in
conversation on the subject of
Storytelling on the Digital Edge.
These and other events, including
an appearance by 2014 Wordfest
Distinguished Author Ann-Marie
MacDonald, round-off the Banff
Weekend.

19th annual Wordfest!
Since its founding in 1996, Wordfest has given us the opportunity to learn the stories behind the story
from the authors that brought them to life. It is a celebration of all things literary; with approximately 60
separate events, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.
The success of Wordfest depends upon many volunteers who are excited to share their appreciation for
the written word with the attendees. The staff at WordFest spends many hours organizing this Festival,
and must be commended for their role in honouring our stories and the people that tell them.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Wordfest celebrates the power of story

in more ways than ever this year. We
are bringing back popular events
that redefine literary programming
and introducing new formats and
partnerships.
Theatre Junction Grand is our new
Community Arts Consortium partner
and the Festival will be occupying their
gorgeous historic building as our main
festival hub. Patrons will be able to
mingle with other festivalgoers and
connect with their favourite authors in
the mezzanine bar, restaurant, coffee
kiosk or Festival bookstore.
This year there are more than 80

writers, from around the globe, in over
65 events that include our new Oneon-one interviews (see Back Stories
Section p. 36) and a Readers Choice
(p. 26) event (chosen by popular vote),
themed discussions on topical issues,
interactive performances, educational
workshops and special and featured
events combining famous, mid-career,
and up-and-coming authors.
There are events to entertain, inspire,
provoke and enlighten. We look forward
to welcoming you to the 19th edition
of Wordfest and we thank you for your
support.

Hello Wordfest enthusiasts,

Since 1933, emerging and established
artists from around the world have
brought their creative energy to The
Banff Centre, and we have been proud
to support and mentor them as they
turn their dreams into reality. As a
founding partner of Wordfest, The

Festival back to Banff for its closing

Working with the Wordfest team to

on Creative Identities (p. 56), and Kate
York, Director of Urban Center Books, founder of

the Independent Booksellers of NYC, with Sarah
McNally, and editor of Unpacking My Library.
Steffens won the 2014 Rozsa Award for
Innovation for pushing the boundaries of
traditional literary presentations at Wordfest.

7 HOW DOES THE CLOTHING SWAP WORK?

Arrive by 6pm and bring a maximum of 5 clean
womens clothing items in excellent condition
to participate in the swap. On the tags provided,
write a brief description of the background of
each garment and then affix the tags to your
items for guests to see. Then browse and select
from the racks of clothes contributed by others,
sharing in their unique stories and experiences
as women in clothes. Any leftover items will be
donated to a local womens organization.

The savory muffins are so delicious, I cant even handle it.

Gluten-intolerant? According to Stephanie, the carrot cake
muffins are also to die for. This caf is locally owned &
environmentally conscious. In fact, they were among the first
in Calgary to acquire LEAF certification. Their ginger hot
chocolate is probably the best hot chocolate in town.
Their coffee is organic and fair trade.The atmosphere bolsters
some serious creativity and productivity I think Ive written
at least half a dozen blog posts in this cozy caf (the lack of
wi-fi might have something to do with it, or maybe its just the
atmosphere of sustainable goodness).
Progressive conversations are had here. Ive heard talk of
provincial parks, bike routes, gardens and renewable energy,
to name a few topics (yes, sometimes I still manage to get
distracted while writing blog posts. But in my defense, my
ears naturally perk up when conversations breach the topic
of sustainability).
Familiar faces are always around to say hello and brighten
your day. The last time I was in line for a quick coffee en route
to work, I bumped into Blaine from PEL Recycling. After a
pleasant conversation (and a savory muffin) my day, which
hadnt started out so great, was instantly better.
