A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI

On behalf of the citizens of Calgary and my City Council colleagues I am pleased to welcome you to the
19th annual Wordfest!
Since its founding in 1996, Wordfest has given us the opportunity to learn the stories behind the story
from the authors that brought them to life. It is a celebration of all things literary; with approximately 60
separate events, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.
The success of Wordfest depends upon many volunteers who are excited to share their appreciation for
the written word with the attendees. The staff at WordFest spends many hours organizing this Festival,
and must be commended for their role in honouring our stories and the people that tell them.
Sincerely,

Naheed K. Nenshi
MAYOR

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Wordfest celebrates the power of story

in more ways than ever this year. We
are bringing back popular events
that redefine literary programming
and introducing new formats and
partnerships.
Theatre Junction Grand is our new
Community Arts Consortium partner
and the Festival will be occupying their
gorgeous historic building as our main
festival hub. Patrons will be able to
mingle with other festivalgoers and
connect with their favourite authors in
the mezzanine bar, restaurant, coffee
kiosk or Festival bookstore.

This year there are more than 80

writers, from around the globe, in over
65 events that include our new Oneon-one interviews (see Back Stories
Section p. 36) and a Readers Choice
(p. 26) event (chosen by popular vote),
themed discussions on topical issues,
interactive performances, educational
workshops and special and featured
events combining famous, mid-career,
and up-and-coming authors.
There are events to entertain, inspire,
provoke and enlighten. We look forward
to welcoming you to the 19th edition
of Wordfest and we thank you for your
support.

BANFF GREETING

Hello Wordfest enthusiasts,

Since 1933, emerging and established
artists from around the world have
brought their creative energy to The
Banff Centre, and we have been proud
to support and mentor them as they
turn their dreams into reality. As a
founding partner of Wordfest, The
Banff Centre is proud to welcome the
Festival back to Banff for its closing
weekend.

Working with the Wordfest team to

bring outstanding writers together with
the readers who love their work is a
wonderful opportunity, and capturing
the events to share with a broader
audience is a key value for us this year.
The Banff Centre is delighted
to welcome the 2014 Wordfest
Distinguished Author Ann-Marie
MacDonald (p. 54). We look forward to
the story behind the storyteller in her
on-stage interview about her new novel,
Adult Onset. Author Thomas King opens
the weekend; Joshua Ferris and Elyse
Friedman will join us for a discussion
on Creative Identities (p. 56), and Kate

York, Director of Urban Center Books, founder of

the Independent Booksellers of NYC, with Sarah
McNally, and editor of Unpacking My Library.
Steffens won the 2014 Rozsa Award for
Innovation for pushing the boundaries of
traditional literary presentations at Wordfest.
Visit rozsafoundation.org for more details!

Pullinger and Adam Sternbergh will

be in conversation on the subject of

Storytelling on the Digital Edge
(p. 54). This, live storytelling, Books and
Brunch (p. 55) and much more will close
a truly exciting 2014 Festival.
We look forward to welcoming you to
The Banff Centre from October 17 19
for a great festival weekend!

re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild
our gutted local economies.

There wasnt a lot to do in Calgary 30 years ago. On the weekend, groups

of people would go out for cheesecake. This actually happened, although I
think our forefathers are trying to forget this phase of our history.

Featuring: Johanna Skibsrud

and Kim Thy

How can war, a phenomenon of

destruction, give rise to literature, an
act of creation? Two novelists discuss
and read from new novels whose main
characters find their destinies deeply
shaped by global conflict.

Taking queues from the notorious hit

song from the legendary Rolling Stones,
this event examines the phenomenon
of the psycho-killer in popular culture
and why sociopaths or psychopaths
are depicted in TV shows, movies and
books as thoughtful and loveable
characters.

Quartet for the End of Time by Johanna

Skibsrud takes place in 1932 when
America is roiling with unrest and
World War One veterans, embittered by
the Great Depression.
In Mn, Kim Thys highly anticipated
second novel, Mn has three mothers:
the one who gave birth to her, the
nun who took her in, and her beloved
Maman, whose life was irrevocably
upended by war.

Featuring: Adam Sternbergh

In Shovel Ready, Adam Sternberghs

propulsive and wholly original debut,
we meet Spademan, a one-of-a-kind
antihero in a futuristic New York
depicted as a crime-ridden, derelict
wasteland. A former garbageman and
devoted husband, Spademans now
alone, working as a hit man.

The savory muffins are so delicious, I cant even handle it.

Gluten-intolerant? According to Stephanie, the carrot cake
muffins are also to die for. This caf is locally owned &
environmentally conscious. In fact, they were among the first
in Calgary to acquire LEAF certification. Their ginger hot
chocolate is probably the best hot chocolate in town.
Their coffee is organic and fair trade. The atmosphere bolsters
some serious creativity and productivity I think Ive written
at least half a dozen blog posts in this cozy caf (the lack of
wi-fi might have something to do with it, or maybe its just the
atmosphere of sustainable goodness).
Progressive conversations are had here. Ive heard talk of
provincial parks, bike routes, gardens and renewable energy,
to name a few topics (yes, sometimes I still manage to get
distracted while writing blog posts. But in my defense, my
ears naturally perk up when conversations breach the topic
of sustainability).
Familiar faces are always around to say hello and brighten
your day. The last time I was in line for a quick coffee en route
to work, I bumped into Blaine from PEL Recycling. After a
pleasant conversation (and a savory muffin) my day, which
hadnt started out so great, was instantly better.

SPECIAL EVENT / $25 with Gold or Banff Pass

Featuring: Jacqueline Baker, Emily St.

John Mandel and Louise Welsh
Break your morning fast with brunch,
delicious conversation, and the breathtaking views at The Banff Centre, as
writers from Canada and around the
world discuss the obsessions (and
crimes) of their most indelible char-

actersfor those who are hungry for

criminal minds and food for thought.

7 The Broken Hours by Jacqueline Baker

is set in 1936, and follows a horror writer, H.P.
Lovecraft, and his new personal assistant, Arthor
Crandle, who is soon drawn into the authors
distinctly unnerving world.

7 Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

is an audacious, darkly glittering novel about
art, fame, and ambition set in the eerie days of
civilizations collapse, from the author of three
highly-acclaimed previous novels.

7 A Lovely Way To Burn by Louise Welsh

is a frightening and fascinating account of a
pandemic called The Sweats that is sweeping
the globe. London is a city in crisis. But Stevie
Flint suspects her boyfriends sudden death was
not from natural causes, but a chilling murder.

TICKETS: $20

Featuring: Joshua Ferris

and Elyse Friedman
New York-based Joshua Ferris and
Toronto-based Elyse Friedman discuss
novels that grapple with the desires and
spiritual journeys of their characters
search for meaning and identity in our
increasingly complex (and wired) world.
Warning: Some identities discussed may
have been stolen!

1 To Rise Again at a Decent Hour by

1 The Answer to Everything by Elyse

Joshua Ferris is about a mans confrontation

Friedman is the story of a perpetually broke

with his troubled past and his uncertain future

artist and a humorous examination of the gap

in a life disturbingly split between the real and

between reason and faith, and the human need

the virtual. Paul ORourke loves the world, but

for connection, love and transcendence.

doesnt know how to live in it.
