Hi, Jennifer. I was happy that we could "re-connect" earlier today so I could update you, as the Director of Our Lady of the Lake University's Center for Volunteerism, on some of the current activities at the Las Palmas Branch Library. Tim Johnson is the new manager at the Library and I'm sure he or his staff will be able to answer any specific questions you or any of your student volunteers or student organizations may have. We spoke earlier about the chess club starting next week at the Library (flyer attached). You might be interested in the 2014 news item from the Edgewood Independent School District(Las Palmas Library is located within the boundaries of the EISD): "Edgewood ISD Chess Program: Edgewood ISD teamed up with Success Through Chess this school year. Success Through Chess is an after-school program that aims to raise attendance, achievement, and morale for students and, in addition, to decrease discipline issues and create a more positive culture by engaging students and the community with Success Through Chess events. Each student experienced Success Through Chess after school for at least 60-120 minutes per week. On Saturday April 5, 2014, EISD held its first annual Chess Tournament. 300 students, ranging in age from 5 to 14, participated in the tournament." Las Palmas Friends are helping to sponsor and/or promote the following activities at the Library: -- Sept. 2nd: The 10:30 a.m. weekly Bilingual Story Time is beginning and will continue throughout the Fall period. --Sept. 6th: Habitat for Humanity will hold an information session entitled "Building Dreams in San Antonio" from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for anyone interested in learning who qualifies and how to apply for this affordable, home ownership program. -- Sept. 8th: The 6:30 p.m. weekly chess program kicks off and will focus on learning/reinforcing the basics. A chess tournament is tentatively planned for December, with a trophy and awards for the champs. -- Sept. 9th: The Lego Club will meet the second and fourth Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. We plan to  purchase/acquire more sets for the Lego "builders". --Sept. 13th: Barbara Renaud Gonzalez will read from her book, Boy Made of Lightning: Willie Velasquez, at 3:00 p.m. --Oct. 4th: At 2:00 p.m., a representative from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service/Institute of Renewable Natural Resources will speak on the important message of water conservation, to include the harvesting of rain water. -- Nov. 7th [3:00 to 5:00 p.m.] and 8th [10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.]: The book sale is coordinated  by the Las Palmas Friends group, with most children's books priced at 50 or 25 cents and nothing over $1.00. These are affordable bargains in an area that does not have a book store or even a
Half-Priced Books store. We look forward to a good partnership with OLLU since there are many projects or events that can mutually benefit both the student volunteers and the Las Palmas Library community.
