Begin patterning:Round 1: K2, P1, K1 repeat to end.Round 2: K3, P1 repeat to endWork roundsone and two until it measures 5.25” from the cast on edge.Thumb for both sizes:Using waste yarn knit 8 stitches from N1. Slip the stitches from the right needle back to N1. Using working yarn continue working in pattern beginning with stitches worked onwaste yarn on N1. Work in pattern for another 1.5” or 6.75” from the cast on edge. Castoff loosely. To work the thumb you will use 2 dpns to pick up 8 stitches on the row above and belowthe waste yarn stitches. To pick up the stitches you will insert the tip of the dpn into theright side of the stitch (if looking at the stitch you will see a V, insert needle to the rightof the stitch picking up the right half of the V). Pick up 8 stitches in this manner on therow above and below the waste yarn. Using another dpn “unzip” or undo the waste yarnstitches and set the waste yarn aside to use for the next mitt. This will leave you with 8stitches on each needle and an opening into the mitt. Work as follows:Round 1: Beginning on the bottom needle using the working yarn (leave a few inches of tail to use later) K1, P1 to the end (this will be N1), with N2 in the gap between the topneedle and N1 pick up and work 4 stitches as follows K1, P1, K1, P1, then using thesame needle K1, P1, K1, P1 from the top needle, using another dpn, N3, K1, P1, K1, P1over the remaining stitches on the top needle, then pick up and work 4 stitches in the gapas K1, P1, K1, P1 this will leave you with 8stitches on each needle.Rounds 2-12: K1, P1 repeat to end.Bind off loosely, weave in ends.
