D
allas triathlete Ashley
Johnson and her train-
ing partner and friend,
Lauren Barnett, are among
nearly 30 area multisport ath-
letes competing in Sundays
Ironman 70.3 World Champi-
onship in Mont-Tremblant,
Quebec.
Like others, Johnson, an
amateur, and Barnett, a pro,
expressed renewed excitement
about competing at 70.3
Worlds. Sundays race features
a new venue and offers a more
level playing field.
Its somewhere more exot-
ic, Barnett said. Racing out of
the country is pretty cool with-
out having to go overseas. Its
not too cumbersome.
Race organizers announced
last year that they will rotate
the championships annually.
After Canada, the world cham-
pionships will move to Austria
andthenAustralia in 2016.
In its early years, the Iron-
man 70.3 World Champion-
ships were held in Clearwater,
Fla. The flat course led to exces-
sive drafting, making it unfit to
be a championship course,
Johnsonsaid.
Organizers relocated the
race to Las Vegas. After a com-
petitive first year, Johnson said
athletes shied away from the
event because of the excessive
heat and altitude.
In contrast, Mont-Trem-
blant will feature challenging
hills without the heat or alti-
tude, which will make the
course more fair for all.
For Johnson, the 70.3
Worlds has been her key 2014
race since she qualified last fall.
She said she prefers having the
longer bike and run legs be-
cause she can overcome a slow-
er swimand still compete well
inher age group.
Johnson said her training,
often with Barnett, has been
strong since recovering from a
calf strain that sidelined her
early this year.
She has made me faster,
chasing her around, Johnson
said. Its good to have someone
you can enjoy training with
that will push you. I bitch about
it at the time, but at the end we
have taken ourselves to another
gear, to another level I wouldnt
have been able to get to on my
own.
Johnson said she thinks she
has the potential to be among
the top contenders in her age
group.
Im hoping the cool weath-
er in Canada will bring some
race day magic, Johnson said.
For Barnett, 2014 didnt un-
fold as she had planned, but
she couldnt have envisioned a
better season. Her original
plan was to race the Lifetime
Triathlon Series, which fea-
tures the shorter Olympic dis-
tance races.
She crashed while cycling in
February and sustained an an-
kle injury. She was sidelined
several weeks and had to miss
the first Lifetime race, which
all but eliminated her from
qualifying for the champion-
ships inthat Series.
She quickly shifted gears
and reorganized her season
around the Ironman 70.3 dis-
tance events. She won her in-
augural race as a pro in New
Orleans. She then placed third
at Kansas, Buffalo Springs
Lake near Lubbock and Ra-
cine, Wis.
This was a bit unexpected,
she said of qualifying for 70.3
Worlds in her first attempt as a
pro, especially considering she
had planned a totally different
season. My expectations have
been far exceeded.
The 70.3-mile distance
blends Barnetts endurance
andspeed.
While Canada isnt her last
2014 race, she said its her big-
gest. She heads into it in what
she calls the best shape of my
life, hoping to place among the
topAmericans.

the sprint and Olympic dis-
tance races, and in the Aquath-
lon (swim/bike) in Canada
Aug. 27 through Monday. He
was among local athletes com-
peting for Team USA.
Ahmed Zaher of Playtri, an
Egyptian who lives in Dallas,
placed third in the mens 50-54
age group at the Olympic dis-
tance race.

GARLAND A 52-yard
touchdown on a double pass
with 4:50 left gave Rowlett
enough cushion to hold off
Lake Highlands, 37-35,
Thursday at Homer B. John-
son Stadium.
Lake Highlands (1-1)
trailed by two points when
Rowlett (2-0) faced third-
and-12 at its own 48.
Backup quarterback Matt
Peal, playing in place of an in-
jured Logan Bonner, threw a
lateral to receiver Dylan
Watts, who found Josh Lewis
deep down the left sideline.
Lewis evaded one tackler and
scored to boost Rowletts lead
to nine points.
Lake Highlands scored
with 1:23 left to cut the lead to
two, but Rowletts Quinton
Stinson recovered the onside
kick.
Bonner passed for 111 yards
and two touchdowns and ran
for 75 yards and two more
scores before being helped off
the field with an apparent leg
injury in the third quarter.
Rowlett dominated early
as Bonner tossed two touch-
down passes and ran 33 yards
for another score for a 21-0
lead in the first quarter.
Lake Highlands hurt itself
with three turnovers in the
first half but cut the lead to 27-
15 by intermission. Tyler
Hughes rushed for 136 yards
and two touchdowns to help
Lake Highlands rally.
Rowlett scored three
touchdowns within four min-
utes in the first quarter.
Bonner hit Lewis on a slant
for a 13-yard touchdown to be-
gin the scoring. Following a
Lake Highlands fumble, Bon-
ner threw a 23-yard strike
down the middle to Watts for
a14-0 lead.
Bonner ran 33 yards for a
score and a 21-0 lead with 35
seconds left in the first quar-
ter.
