 Basics of Search engine Optimization.
Step 1. Choosing The Right Keywords
Pick the right Keywords, Do some research and figure out what keywords your top rankedcompetition is using. Then use multiple combinations of keywords. There are lot of site devotedto helping you figure out the best keywords.Make sure:1.The keywords you select are actually ones people would use to reach you2.Don’t be too general – try to focus regionally first3.Don’t be afraid to use you competitors keywordsTargeting a suitable market will depend on your website, as well as the products and servicesyou offer. Try to be specific with your keywords, and remember that people no longer use singlekeyword search phrases - the average search phrase contains 3-5 related words. For example, if you're optimizing for a web development site and you're located in Calgary,Canada, use keywords such as "web development Calgary" or "web design Calgary ".To find out how many websites are competing with your keywords -- either intentionally or not-- simply do a search on Google and note down how many results are returned. In our case, for web design we're competing with 9,080,000 sites. The more sites that are competing for your keywords, the harder it will be to get on the front page.Try using the Overture search suggestion tool. It's not exact, and doesn't measure Googlesearches, but it does give a very good estimate.
Step 2. Your domain name and Title Tag
Two of the most determining factors in Google's ranking are your domain name andtitle tag. For example, a domain name such as:http://www.web-design-calgary.com will generally get ranked higher thanhttp://www.wedgeim.com.com, assuming that they had identical keywords andpage content.

For some of us, keywords in the domain name look too unprofessional, and we'vealready registered our domain, so it’s too late to change. An alternative -- and also auseful tactic -- is to add your keywords into the names of your pages, such ashttp://www.wedgeim.com/web-development-services.htmlyour title tag is very important in your Google ranking.Going back to our example of a web design company earlier, a good title tag wouldbe:<title>"Wedgeim provides professional affordable web development services inCalgary , Alberta."</title>
Step 3. Content, Content, Content
Google loves relevant content, so it is vital that your content will add value and isnot just a bunch of filler. Also if you can add some of your keywords into yourcontent without overdoing it helps a lot. For example here is over done:Wedge internet Marketing is Calgary web Design Company doing Calgary webdesign since 2004Here is better:Wedge Internet marketing is A Calgary Based web designer serving it clients since2004
Step 4. Back links
This could be one of the most important maybe next to content, though they areboth pretty close to number 1 in my opinion. What is a back link?:Back links are incominglinksto awebsiteorweb page. Inbound links were originally important (prior to the emergence of search engines) as a primary meansof webnavigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of back links is one indication of the popularity or importance of thatwebsite or page (though other measures,
