MEANING
An environmental impact assessment (
EIA
) is anassessment of the possible impact — positive ornegative — that a proposed project may have on theenvironment; considering
Natural
,
Social
and
Economic
 aspects. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure thatdecision makers consider the ensuing environmentalimpacts to decide whether to proceed with the project.
 
 
DEFINITION
EIA can be considered as a mechanism which maximisesthe efficient use of natural and human resources. It canalso reduce costs and time taken to reach a decision byensuring that subjectivity and duplication of effort areminimised, as well as identifying and attempting toevaluate the primary and secondary consequenceswhich might require the introduction of expensivepollution control equipment or compensation and othercosts at a later date.
