Dr. Joseph T. Lane
Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves has been
a vital part of the community for 30 years. Founded in 1984
by Dr. Joseph T. Lane, it is the longest established
chiropractic practice in Webster Groves.
My wife and I grew up in the St. Louis community,
said Dr. Lane. Upon graduation from Logan College of
Chiropractic, I chose Webster Groves for my practice
because it reminded me of Normandy, the community
where I was raised.
Dr. Lane, also certified in acupuncture, treats each
patient as an individual, tailoring their treatment to that
which is suitable for their condition. It is that care that has
Dr. Lane recognized as Missouri State Chiropractor of the
year in both 1995 and 2013.
The staff at the Back & Neck Care Center includes
office manager Terri Thompson, who has over 20 years of
experience in the chiropractic field and Lisa Minor, whose
upbeat attitude enlivens the Therapy Department.
Many of our patients enjoy the camaraderie we all share
with each other, said Dr. Lane. We make each patient feel
like family and occasionally go beyond to make their
experience a positive one.
Dr. Lane would like to thank the Webster Groves
community for making their 30th year celebration possible.
The Back & Neck Care Center has had the pleasure of
providing service to Webster Groves and its surrounding
neighborhoods for over a quarter of a century. Their
patients generously support their Fan Fare and Coats for
Kids programs year after year, offering donations to
Webster/Rock Hill Ministries. Dr. Lane and his staff are
grateful for these contributions and the opportunity to be a
part of this community.

Over 27 years ago, Kit Whittington, RN, BSN, was
the primary caregiver for her grandmother. Whittington
was the only family available to assist with her care and
because she also worked full time, acting as the primary
caregiver grew increasingly difficult. She knew this was
an unsustainable lifestyle and hired an independent
caregiver to assist her. She soon discovered that her
grandmother was not receiving the level of care she
deserved.
At the end of the day, I checked on her and to my
disbelief, I discovered the caregiver had simply not
shown up. My grandmother had missed her doctors
appointment and much needed meal. It was a debilitating
moment; we were both in tears, Whittington said.
In 1987, Whittington started Seniors Home Care
(SHC) to provide a family support system for older
adults. SHC employs an around-the-clock nursing staff
to assist clients and families with achieving their unique
goals and needs. All nurses and caregivers are carefully
screened, bonded and insured employees (not
contractors). All employees undergo drug testing, a
thorough background search and complete a training
program. SHC offers flexibility of care ranging from a
30-minute QuickVisit
TM
to 24/7 care.
SHC has received an A+ rating, as well as the Torch
Award from the Better Business Bureau and is celebrating
its 27th year in business serving the St. Louis area.
My own feelings of helplessness and a desire for a
higher quality of life for my grandmother drove me to
find a better way to care for her. The motivation behind
SHC is my own personal experience and Ive built the
company on a solid foundation of 27 years of consistent,
compassionate caring for all clients.

A shiny, silvery rocket-ship has landed in St.
Louis County. It is not an alien life form, nor UFO,
however. Rather, it is a prestigious literary prize,
the Hugo Award, recently won by local author and
Shrewsbury resident Ann Leckie for her debut novel,
Ancillary Justice.
The Hugo Awards are administered by the World
Science Fiction Convention (WSFC) and winners are
voted upon by WSFC members. Possibly the most
esteemed award in the science fction/fantasy genre,
Hugo Awards have been presented annually since
1955.
Over the years, distinguished authors Ursula K.
LeGuin, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Poul
Anderson have all taken home the heavy trophy,
with its fve pounds of chrome and glass. This year,
Leckie is re-arranging her freplace mantel to make
room for the gleaming award among the candles and
family photos.
While a student at Rosati-Kain High School in
the 1980s, Leckies early efforts at essay writing met
with frustration.
I never got good at the fve paragraph essay; it
felt really unnatural, Leckie said.
The novel, as a form, was a much better ft for
her. Her degree from Washington University was in
music rather than literature, but she found that some
of the concepts transferred from vocal performance
to the written word.
Music is sound over time, she said. Pacing and
structure are music related.
Leckie found her literary voice, in part, by
attending a 2005 writers workshop in Seattle, and
by participating in National Novel Writing Month.
NaNo, as it is known, encourages fedgling authors to
get words on paper for the entire month of November,
and offers support through an extensive online
community.
I love NaNo, with the message boards, and
everyone cheering you on, Leckie said. You have
to learn to write past what that self-critical voice in
your head tells you. The boards cheer you on, and at
the end you have 50,000 words and you have learned
that you can do it. Ignore the little voice and it will
be OK.
On the web, you can hear writers with the same
diffculties and issues you have, and everyones
perception is different, she said. If you are writing
in a different way, you arent doing it wrong.
Leckie said she fnds revisions daunting and
works more slowly now, spending more time on a
single paragraph.
While she did not take Sister Mary Denis
popular science fction class at Rosati-Kain, Leckie
frequented the St. Louis Public Librarys Carpenter
Branch on Saturday mornings. She read the works of
Jack Vance, a three-time Hugo Award winner.
Hes very old school, with gorgeous language,
Leckie said. And Andre Norton I read more Andre
Norton than is good for any one human.
Norton was born Alice Mary Norton, but legally
adopted her pen name in the 1930s. At the time,
boys were the primary readers of fantasy novels, and
her publisher told her a masculine name would help
her sell more books.
Leckie had no such issue. Ancillary Justice
has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and been
translated into over a dozen languages. Science
fction/fantasy writing is less of a boys club than it
seems to be, she said.
Leckies novel does have a twist on gender issues,
however. She created a fctional civilization that does

Homewatch Caregivers recently celebrated its 15th
anniversary of providing nonmedical in-home assistance
for seniors who require assistance so they can maintain
their independence and stay in their homes.
The agency serves St. Louis and St. Charles counties
with 100 caregivers who offer hourly and live-in
assistance. Beginning Oct. 1, the agency will begin
accepting Medicare payments.
My wife, Maria, and I chose a business so we could
work together in an industry that was growing, said
President Mike Gianino. It was also our hope this
business could develop into a family business that our
children would enjoy.
In addition to his wife Maria, who serves as vice
president of marketing, his team includes Michael P.
Gianino as vice president of operations, and Jody
Wagner, R.N., as client assessments and caregiving
training.
It was important after 20 years with Anheuser-Busch
to do less overnight travel while also becoming involved
firsthand in the betterment of the community, he
added. Our company has improved the quality of life
for both our elderly clients and the many caregivers we
have employed.
The home healthcare industry demands that
caregiving agencies understand the needs and expectations
of their elderly clients and their families, while also being
able to attract, motivate and retain the very best
caregivers in the industry.
Clients tell the Gianinos that their caregivers do
understand the needs of the clients.
Treating the Greatest Generation with the utmost
in respect and dignity has been our top priority,
Gianino said.

Hamilton offers audiological evaluations and fits
patients for hearing aids and hearing health care
products, including assistive listening devices, alerting

It typically takes the average adult seven to 10 years

Association.
Hearing loss is truly the invisible handicap as it is
nearly impossible to see an individuals hearing loss by
looking at someone, Hamilton said. After a
conversation, it can be more noticeable than hearing
aids themselves.
She received bachelors degrees in nuclear medicine
