Our Definition of New Adult:
We view New Adult fiction (NA) as a category of literaturemeaning, it gives readers content
expectations, but it does not dictate genre-based criteria. Typically, a novel is considered NA if it
encompasses the transition between adolescence (a life stage often depicted in Young Adult fiction)
and true adulthood.

Protagonists generally fall between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, though exceptions may
apply. NA characters are often portrayed experiencing: college, living away from home for the first
time, military deployment, apprenticeships, a first steady job, a first serious relationship, etc.

Other terms for NA include: Upper YA, Crossover Fiction, and Mature YA.

The History of NA Alley
NA Alley launched in 2012, just before what some are referring to as the "NA Boom". At the time,
our goal was simple: We wanted to make New Adult happen. Heres a quick timeline of our history:
Early 2012 - NA Alley was founded by Carrie Butler, L.G. Kelso, Bailey Kelsey, Juliana Haygert,
Victoria H. Smith, Jaycee DeLorenzo, and Summer Lane.
Mid 2012 - Thanks to a few independent bestsellers and an underserved market, New Adult
began its shift from industry taboo to the next big thing.
Early 2013 - After Bailey left to concentrate on her education, an open call was put out, resulting
in an overwhelming number of applicants.
Mid 2013 - Two new contributors, E.J. Wesley and Lynn Rush/Reese Monroe, were added to the
mix. Diana Long came on as the Alleys coordinator. This period marked the first official NA
Crush Tournament.
Early 2014 - Summer stepped down to focus on her career, and the remaining members decided
to divide their focus. Carrie, E.J., and L.G. worked on the websitewhich continued to act as the
categorys central hubwhile Victoria, Jaycee, Juliana, and Lynn/Reese steered the blog into a
more promotional direction.

Mid 2014 - NA Alley surpassed one million hits, and the second NA Crush Tournament took
place. Shortly thereafter, Victoria, Jaycee, Juliana, and Lynn/Reese left the Alley to pursue other
interests. The remaining members (Carrie, E.J., and L.G.) took that opportunity to breathe new
life into the project by imitating a complete site revamp.
Late 2014 - NA Alley relaunched with new members (see: list below) and features.

Media Quotes:
"Interest in the category has generated a New Adult website (www.naalley.com) for both readers
and writers called NA Alley: Bridging the Gap Between Young Adult and Adult Fiction.' One of
the founders, Carrie Butler, 26, is an Ohio writer whose New Adult novel Strength (Sapphire
Star) was published last month.

Butler credits technology with propelling the New Adult trend: The e-book revolution pushed
(New Adult) into the readers' hands,' she says." - USA Today, April 2013
"In September, Publishers Weekly reported that over half of young adult sales come from adults.
The 'over-18' crowd makes up a significant portion of the YA audience, and from what I've seen,
makes up a significant portion of the NA audience, as well," says NA Alley blogger and author
Carrie Butler. What's interesting about the rise of NA is that its success can be attributed to the
most powerful tool in any marketing campaign: word of mouth." - Book Business Magazine,
February 2013
"According to NA Alley, a site dedicated to the new adult fiction genre, New adult fiction
encompasses the transition between adolescencea life stage often depicted in young adult
fictionand true adulthood. Protagonists typically fall between the ages of 18 and 26, though
exceptions may apply. Other terms for NA include: upper YA, crossover fiction, and mature
YA.' - Huff Post Books, January 2013
