ON THE FRONT LINES

I believe God wants us to dream, and to dream big, because he’s a big God who wants to do big things, and He wants to do them through us.
the inaugural address
I

want you to pick a number–any number–just get one in your head.Got it? Okay, how many of you picked a number that was larger than a million? Not many. For the restof you, you might want to ask yourself

, because the kind of numbers we pick, when we can pick anynumber, can matter. In 1998, two graduate students at Stanford picked a number. It was the number Googol, which is aone followed by 100 zeroes. That was how much information they dreamed of cataloguing for their Internetsearch engine. To keep that dream in front of them, they named their company “Google.” And now thereare tens of millions of searches through Google every day, accessing billions of pages in nearly 100 languages. And the term “Googling” has become synonymous with Web surfing.Google has now announced arrangements with the New York Public Library, along with the libraries of Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Oxford, and the University of Michigan to digitizevirtually every holding. While Google is a great search engine, that isn’t what made the difference. It’s not why they’ve becomesuch a big part of our culture. It was the number they picked, because that number wasn’t just a number. It was a dream, and they decided to make it a big one.
I believe God wants us to dream, and to dream big, because He’s a big God who wants to do big things, and He wants to do them through us.
