t he s e seven died t ha t w e will e v e r ha v e . In view of t he longstanding c o n t r o v e r s y
on t he m a t t e r , and t he w i d e ly differing r e p o r t s offered t o t he public 1n n e w s
p a p e r s and m a g a z i n e s , 1t seemed t o me w o r t h t r a n s la t i n g them 1n full for t he
scholarly c o m m u n i t y .
T he heading t o each > U u m z t i z p z i t u m ( a u t o p s y ) shows t ha t t he team w a s
assembled on M o n d a y , O c t o b e r 4 , as a result of w r i t t e n o r d e r s from t he then
M a j o r General S u ha r t o , as K O S T R A D C o m m a n d e r , t o t he head of t h e Central Army
Hospital ( R S P A D ) . T he team w a s composed of t w o army d o c t o r s ( Including t he
w e ll k n o w n B r i g. G e n . D r . R o e b i o n o K e r t o p a t D , and t hr e e c i v i li a n s p e c i a li s t s
1n forensic m e d i c i n e at t he Medical Faculty of t he U n i v e r s i t y of I n d o n e s i a .
T h e m o s t senior o f t he s e c i v i l i a n s , D r . S u t o m o T j o k r o n e go r o , w a s t he n t h e
foremost expert 1n forensic m e d i c i n e 1n t he c o u n t r y . T he t e a m worked for 8
ho u r s , I.e., from 4 : 3 0 p.m., O c t o b e r 4 , t o 1 2 : 3 0 a.m., O c t o b e r 5 , 1n t h e D i s s e c
tion Room of t he Central Army H o s p i t a l. They clearly had t o work fast, since
w e know from many p r e s s a c c o u n t s t ha t t he b o d i e s w e r e only removed from t he
well at Lubang Buaja ( Into w hi c h they had been thrown by t h e k i lle r s ) 1n t he
late morning of O c t o b e r 4 , o v e r 7 5 hours a f t e r t he m u r d e r s . By t he n , as w a s t o

suffered t h r e e gu n s ho t w o u n d s t o t h e head, as well as a small slitwound 1n t h e
hand. On t he o t he r hand, t h e w o u n d s suffered by H a r j o n o a r e p u z z li n g, s i n c e n o
m e n t i o n Is m a d e of g u n s h o t s . T h e c a u s e of death w a s a p p a r e n t ly a long deep
incision in t he a b d o m e n , of a t y p e much m o r e likely t o be caused by a b a y o n e t
than a p e n k n i f e or a razor. A s i m i la r , nonfatal wound appeared on t h e v i c t i m ' s
b a c k . T h e only o t he r d a m a ge w a s described as "on t h e left hand and w r i s t ,
w o u n d s caused by a dull t r a u m a . " T h e r e is no o b v i o u s w a y t o interpret t he s e
w o u n d s e x c e p t t o say t ha t they seem u n li k e ly t o be t h e result of t o r t u r e
t o r t u r e r s rarely pick left w r i s t s t o do t he i r w o r k a n d may have been t h e
result of t he dead body being t hr o w n down t he 3 6 f o o t well at Lubang B u a j a .
G o u p 1 1 . T h e fullest a c c o u n t s of t h e d e a t hs of t he s e v i c t i m s appeared in

B t t a Y u d k a t n g g u , O c t o b e r 2 4 . It w a s t h e s e four men t h a t m o s t r e p o r t s of
s a v a ge and sexual t o r t u r e c o n c e r n e d . W ha t t h e f o r e n s i c r e p o r t s reveal ^ s a s
f o llo w s : 1) S. Parman suffered five gu n s ho t w o u n d s , including t w o fatal o n e s t o
t h e he a d ; and, 1n a d d i t i o n , " la c e r a t i o n s and b o n e f r a c t u r e s t o t h e head, t h e
j a w , and t h e lo w e r left leg, each t h e result of a heavy dull t r a u m a . " W e have
no w a y of knowing w ha t caused t he s e dull t r a u m a s r i f l e b u t t s or t he w a l l s and
floor of t h e w e l l b u t they are c le a r ly not " t o r t u r e " w o u n d s , nor could they
ha v e been Inflicted by r a z o r s or p e n k n i v e s . 2 ) S o e p r a p t o died of eleven gu n s ho t
w o u n d s in v a r i o u s p a r t s of his body. O t he r w o u n d s consisted of six l a c e r a t i o n s
and fractured b o n e s caused by dull t r a u m a s around t h e head and f a c e ; o n e caused
by a dull t r a u m a on t h e right c a l f ; w o u n d s and fractured b o n e s " r e s u lt i n g from
a very s e v e r e , dull t r a u m a 1n t he lu m b a r region and on t h e u p p e r right t h i g h " ;
and t h r e e c u t s , w h i c h , t o j u d g e from t he i r s i z e and d e p t h, may have b e e n caused
by b a y o n e t s . Again "dull t r a u m a " I n d i c a t e s c o lli s i o n w i t h la r ge , I r r e gu la r ly
shaped hard o b j e c t s ( r i f le b u t t s or well s t o n e s ) rather than razors or k n i v e s .
3 ) S u t o j o suffered t hr e e gu n s ho t w o u n d s ( including a fatal o n e t o t h e h e a d ) ,
w h i l e " t he right hand and t h e c r a n i u m w e r e crushed as a result of a heavy dull
t r a u m a . " O n c e a ga i n , t he odd c o m b i n a t i o n of right hand, c r a n i u m , and heavy
dull t r a u m a s u gge s t s rifle b u t t s o r well s t o n e s . 4 ) T e n d e a n died of four
gu n s ho t w o u n d s . In a d d i t i o n , t he e x p e r t s found gr a z e w o u n d s on t h e forehead
and left hand, as well as " t hr e e ga p i n g w o u n d s resulting from dull t r a u m a s t o
t h e he a d . "
N o w h e r e 1n t h e s e r e p o r t s 1s t h e r e any u n m i s t a k a b le sign of t o r t u r e , and any
t r a c e of r a z o r s and p e n k n i v e s 1s a b s e n t . Not only a r e almost all t h e n o n
gu n s ho t w o u n d s described as t he result of heavy, dull t r a u m a s , but t he i r physical
d i s t r i b u t i o n a n k l e s , s hi n s , w r i s t s , t h i g h s , t e m p l e s , and so o n s e e m ge n e r a lly

It only r e m a i n s t o b e said t ha t in his speech of D e c e m b e r 1 2 , 1 9 6 5 , t o t h e
I n d o n e s i a n News A ge n c y , A n t c t a , P r e s i d e n t S u k a r n o chastised j o u r n a l i s t s for
t he i r e x a gge r a t i o n s , insisting that t he d o c t o r s w h o had inspected t h e b o d i e s of
t h e v i c t i m s had stated t h e r e w e r e no gha s t ly m u t i li a t i o n s of eyes and ge n i t a ls
as had been reported in t he p r e s s . 1 2

c o r p s e ' s u n d e r p a n t s . Wound g. ( above) w a s probably caused by t hi s
b u t t o n being hit by a b u lle t . T h e b u lle t itself, t i p l e s s , and about 13
mm long, w a s located 5 cm away from t h e site of t h e b u t t o n .

1. T h e c o r p s e w a s already p u t r e s c e n t ; death had occurred a p p r o x i m a t e l y four
d a y s p r e v i o u s l y .
2 . On t h e c o r p s e w e r e discov ered eight entering g u n s h o t w o u n d s on t h e front,
and t w o t o t h e rear.
3 . On t h e ab domen w e r e discov ered t w o exiting g u n s h o t w o u n d s , and o n e on t h e
