As the Festival Director, I am delighted to bring you the exciting new
programme for the 2014 International Agatha Christie Festival. Thanks to
the support we have received from the Arts Council, the festival is set to
become a leading crime writing literary festival with a vintage twist all
in celebration of the worlds greatest crime writer, Dame Agatha Christie,
born in Torquay on 15th September 1890.
The Festival Hub for 2014 is at Torre Abbey, a magnicent historic building
located on the seafront in Torquay and home to the famous Potent Plants
Garden. It is here that the core festival events will take place along with
plenty of opportunities to socialise with fellow literary fans.
The packed programme includes over 30 events featuring well known guest authors, workshops,
discussion panels, lms, tours, and social events for all ages. Headlining this year is Sophie
Hannah, who will make her rst public appearance at Torre Abbey after launching her brand new,
widely-anticipated Poirot continuation novel The Monogram Murders. Plus, the controller of
drama commissioning at the BBC Ben Stephenson will be in conversation with Mathew Prichard,
discussing bringing Agathas immortal characters to life on the small screen ahead of the brand
new BBC adaptations of Partners in Crime and And Then There Were None in 2015.

Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey is Devons largest surviving medieval
monastery and has witnessed, survived and played a role in some epic
moments of history as a ne family home, art gallery and today as a leading
museum and tourist attraction. For the 2014 International Agatha Christie Festival
Torre Abbey will be your Festival Hub with events to be staged in both the ballroom of the
main house and in the medieval Spanish Barn. Situated in its own grounds looking towards
the sea, festival goers will have full access to all of the house and gardens where the Festival
Marquee and Book Tent will be located.

This project is a venture by the National Literacy Trusts Book
About Town project, which celebrates literary legacy.
For the week of the International Agatha Christie Festival
a special Book Bench recreating Tom Adams book cover
Hercule Poirot and the Greenshore Folly, designed by New
Zealand artist Mandii Pope, will be on display for visitors to
Torre Abbey.
For a 5 donation to Festival Funds Hercule Poirot will be
available to join you on the bench for pictures to be taken to
share with your friends and family.
Hercule Poirot and the Greenshore Folly is a novella that
was to become the more well-known Dead Mans Folly. It
will be published for the rst time this July by Harper Collins,
60 years after it was written.

Days gone by celebrated in style!
2014s festival is set to be busier and bigger than ever and Miss Ivy
is kicking of the week long celebrations by turning Torre Abbey
into a vintage wonderland. With over 30 stalls throughout the
stunning venue, selling an eclectic range of vintage, and vintage
inspired clothes, accessories, home ware and crafts all from top
sellers in the South West vintage scene.
The vintage vibe will be set by a fantastic programme of
entertainment including Vintage Dancers, live music, a Punch and
Judy show, vintage demonstrations and a vintage car display. Your

The International Agatha Christie Festival is delighted to be hosting an
exhibition of beautiful Agatha Christie book cover paintings produced
between 1962 and the early 1980s by artist Tom Adams.
The creative partnership of Agatha Christie and artist Tom Adams that resulted
in more than 100 paperback cover paintings over a period of eighteen years
was a unique relationship between author and artist.
These paintings are now recognised internationally as iconic and standalone
examples of twentieth century cover art. Most of the originals are in widely
dispersed private collections, but a significant number of them have been
published in signed, limited edition prints and are collected worldwide.

Join international bestselling novelist
Sophie Hannah as she discusses her career
and work as a thriller writer and poet.
Little wonder Sophie Hannah was chosen
to write a new Hercule Poirot mystery.
She is an international bestselling writer of
psychological crime ction, published in 27
countries. In 2013, her novel, The Carrier,
won the Crime Thriller of the Year Award
at the Specsavers National Book Awards.
Two of Sophies crime novels, The Point of
Rescue and The Other Half Lives, have been
adapted for television and appeared on ITV1
under the series title Case Sensitive in 2011
and 2012.
In 2004, Sophie won rst prize in the Daphne
Du Maurier Festival Short Story Competition
for her suspense story The Octopus Nest,

Celebrating Torquays most famous resident, the Queen of Crime
herself, the Agatha Christie Potent Plants display contains examples
of plants - some poisonous, some a little more benign - that have
featured in this prolic writers output. Given that over half her victims
were poisoned we are sure you will be intrigued by the range of
horticultural nasties on show and fascinated by the Head Gardener,
Ali Marshalls talk which includes information on Agatha Christies life,
her use of poisons in her stories and the plants themselves.

Kate Summerscale, author of the award-winning book The Suspicions of
Mr Whicher, talks about her page-turning 2008 documentary of one of the
foremost detectives of the Victorian era. Tatler Magazine called it The best
who-dunnit of the year and its all true, with the New York Times saying
Fact and ction do not so much blur as bleed into each other. The
Suspicions was rst adapted for television in 2011 starring Paddy Considine
in the title role, and was followed by a spin-of drama co-starring Olivia
Colman. Two new lms based on the detective will air on ITV this autumn.

S.J. PARRIS - THE HISTORICAL THRILLER

Step into the past with a night of historical thrills, suspense and tips with best
selling crime novelist S.J. Parris.
S. J. Parris is the pseudonym of author and journalist Stephanie Merritt, the
author of 7 books, including 4 historical ction thrillers set in Elizabethan
England. Prior to this, she was the Deputy Literary Editor of the Observer and
continues to work and a writer and critic for the Guardian.
Her interest in Tudor England has led her to create a series of historical
thrillers featuring Giordano Bruno ex-monk, radical philosopher and a spy
thought to be a spy for Elizabeth Is government.
Stephanies latest book, Treachery, sees Bruno heading of to Plymouth to

a global audience. Join Dr John Curran as he leads the debate with
an international panel of Christie collectors and enthusiasts, including
Icelandic crime novelist Ragnar Jnasson, as they discuss with you the
worldwide appeal of the Queen of Crime.
Dr John Curran, a lifelong Christie fan, lives in Dublin and is the author of
Agatha Christies Secret Notebooks: 50 years of mysteries in the making
an exploration of the contents of Agatha Christies 73 private notebooks.
A member of the UK Crime Writers Association Ragnar Jnasson is the author of the Dark Iceland Crime
Series published in Sweden and Germany. Ragnar was born and lives in Reykjavik, Iceland and as well as
being a writer is also a lawyer currently teaching copyright law at Reykjavik University having previously
worked on radio and television as a reporter for the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.
SUSANNA JONES - CRAFTING THE THRILLER

Join acclaimed novelist Susanna Jones, in discussion about her work, the
novelists who have inspired her, and the crafting of the dark thriller.
Susanna has published four acclaimed novels The Earthquake Bird, Water
Lily The Missing Persons Guide to Love and When Nights Were Cold and her
work has been translated into over twenty languages. She has won the CWA
John Creasey Dagger, a Betty Trask Award, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize
and was selected for Fiction Uncovered Best British Novels of 2012.
Then, in 1996, she studied for an MA in Novel Writing at the University
of Manchester and now lectures in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway,
University of London, and the rest, as they say, is crime writing history.

Ever wondered how crime writers get their detail right? Join award
winning novelist Ann Cleeves, author of the Shetland and Vera book
series, and her regular collaborator, forensic expert Helen Pepper, to step
under that yellow and black crime scene tape.
In 2006 Ann Cleeves was the rst winner of the prestigious Duncan
Lawrie Dagger Award of the Crime Writers Association for Raven Black,
the rst volume of her Shetland quartet. On 18th October 2012 at the
Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards, in the glittering surroundings of
Grosvenor House, London, Ann was admitted to the Crime Thriller Hall
of Fame - alongside such all-time greats as Colin Dexter, Agatha Christie
and Arthur Conan Doyle!
Helen Pepper is a Senior Lecturer in Policing at Teeside University who also acts as a police advisor
on crime for authors and script writers, including Ann Cleeves. Helens rst job was with the Forensic
Science Service. She later moved on to become a Scenes of Crime ofcer with West Yorkshire Police.
She was appointed a Senior Scientic Support Ofcer with Durham Constabulary, and later a Forensic
Trainer before becoming the Acting Head of Crime Scene Investigation then moving to her current role as
University lecturer. Helen is also a judge for the Crime Writers Association Non-Fiction Dagger Award.

Noted author, historian and tour guide, John Risdon, will deliver
a revealing and fascinating talk on Agatha Christies childhood in
Torquay, and the inuences of Devon on her literary career. John will
also talk about his own relationship with the Christie family. This will
be an informal talk in Torquay Museums cosy caf, followed by a
delicious cream tea. Tickets are 10, to include the talk and cream tea.

Join Agatha Christies grandson Mathew Prichard as he talks to Ben
Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning at the BBC, about
the brand new Agatha Christie adaptations scheduled for 2015 as part
of the 125th anniversary celebrations. And Then There Were None,
Christies most successful work and one of the best-selling crime
novels of all time, will be written by Sarah Phelps (Great Expectations,
BBC; Oliver Twist, BBC) produced by Mammoth Screen (Parades End,
Blandings, BBC; Endeavour, ITV) in partnership with Acorn Productions
and is slated for broadcast Christmas 2015.
Meanwhile, crime-ghting duo Tommy and Tuppence will return to
our screens in a 1950s-set six-part adventure thriller series called
Partners in Crime, starring David Walliams as Tommy. This brand new adaptation will be produced by
Endor Productions (The Escape Artist; Restless; State of Play; The Girl in the Caf, BBC) in partnership
with Acorn Productions and the rst three episodes (TX autumn 2015) will be written by award-winning
author, playwright and director Zinnie Harris.

A CRIME IN RHYME WITH SIMON BRETT

Join Simon for a literary event with a diference A Crime In Rhyme.
In a hilarious rhyming one-man show, Simon sends up all the clichs
of the Golden Age whodunit.
Described by fellow writer Antonia Fraser as one of the wittiest crime
writers around, Simon Brett is the man responsible for the Charles
Paris, Mrs Pargeter and Fethering series of crime novels, as well as
radio and television series such as No Commitments and After Henry.
Simon is a prolic writer of crime ction and, since his rst Charles
Paris book, Cast In Order of Appearance, was published in 1975, he
now has over 90 published books to his name. This year sees the
publication of the 19th Charles Paris investigation, The Cinderella Killer.

Jamie Bernthal, a PhD researcher and Graduate Teaching Assistant for
the Department of English at the University of Exeter, organised Britains
rst academic conference devoted to Agatha Christie in April 2014
entitled Agatha Christie: Crime, Culture, Celebrity. He is a self-confessed
lifelong Agatha Christie buf and he will talk about his experiences
studying, teaching, and researching the Queen of Crime. Come along
and nd out what inspired this young man to dedicate his time to
bringing together great minds to talk about the greatest crime writer of
all time and nd out what he thought about the whole experience.

you how! Join Detective Sam Shovel and the Superstar Detective Agency and learn the ropes of crime
solving in this interactive workshop for ages 5 to 11 years.
Learn the ropes and nd out how to read a crime scene, you will nd out the best way to remember all the
clues! You can try out your interrogation skills on a suspect but can you can spot a truthful statement and
detect a lie? You can then earn your stripes by going on a physical story to solve a mysterious crime!

Agatha Christie novel Dead Mans Folly this is an activity especially
designed for young people to exercise their little grey cells and

Are you a young writer aged 9-15 with an interest in detective stories?
Come along and learn how to write your own murder mystery with
acclaimed novelist and tutor Babs Horton. From creating characters to
building a sense of suspense, learn how to craft a brilliant story.
Babs Horton was born in Wales and grew up in London. She attended
the University College of St Mark & St John and has taught for over
30 years in schools. She spent two years as the Royal Literary Fund
Writing Fellow at the University of Plymouth working with students on
all aspects of writing. She has also lectured in English and Creative
Writing and supervised MA students. Her debut novel A Jarful of
Angels won the Pendleton May rst novel award and was shortlisted
for the Authors Club of Great Britain prize. Since then she has

guidance? Join award winning writer Sarah Hilary for this crime writing
masterclass and gain expert knowledge on the ingredients that make
a bestselling crime novel.
For her short stories Sarah has been awarded the Fish Criminally
Short Histories Prize in 2008, the Sense Creative Award in 2010
and, most recently, the Cheshire Prize for Literature in 2012. She has
had several stories published in anthologies, including the CWAs
anthology. Someone Elses Skin is her rst full length novel and the
rights have been sold in Norway, Sweden, France, Germany and Italy
as well as to Penguin USA who are publishing in 2014. Sarah lives in
Bath with her husband and daughter.
