Basketball is the first love, but Jamabo knows that foot- ball is his ticket to big-time col- lege athletics. SportsDays top area running-back recruit in the Class of 2015 has scholar- ship offers from most of the powerhouses. They would love to land Jamabo, who mixes power with speed and agility that make him as elusive as he is effusive. Several colleges, most nota- bly Baylor and Texas A&M, have used basketball as an en- ticement. Its always been part of the pitch, Jamabo said. Right now Im focused on football, but after the season finishes, it will definitely be on my mind. It would be difficult for Ja- mabo, a combo guard who prides himself on locking down the opposingteams best scorer, to give up basketball. Theres also little doubt that he could play Division I basketball, even if he projects as being much more impactful in football. Playing basketball and foot- ball is rare. Among the few ex- amples of starring roles in both sports are Julius Peppers (North Carolina) and Tony Gonzalez (California), who played college basketball be- fore starting NFL careers. Flor- ida State quarterback Charlie Ward won the Heisman Tro- phy in 1994 and was a point guard in the NBA for 11 sea- sons. But the overlap of football and basketball complicates things. If Sosos on a top football team, hes probably going to play through New Years, said Eric Bossi, the national basket- ball analyst for Rivals.com. Hed have to start playing bas- ketball in the heart of confer- ence season. Just the timing of it makes it nearly impossible to play both. Jamabo isnt worried about the timing right now. Hes wor- ried only about having the time of his life as his senior season continues with Plano West (2-0), which is No. 8 in the Class 6A area rankings and takes on Plano East (1-1) on Fri- day. Its my senior year. This is the year to lead the team, Ja- mabo said. I want to be that guy who can lead the team to something special. Plano West coach Mike Hughes certainly thinks his running back is that guy. He told Jamabo, who split carries with Auston Anderson (now at Northwestern) the last two years and still managed back- to-back 1,000-yard seasons, that the game plan would be pretty simple: Were going to give you the ball 30 times a game, Hughes said, and see what happens. Great things have happened so far for Plano West and Ja- mabo, who has scored on three touchdown runs of more than 50 yards. The coaches are always telling me I dont have to score on every play, but thats my mind-set, Jamabo said. When I know the end zones coming, somethings just in my mind. You can see sometimes on film that my body just kicks it into another gear. AndIm gone. Follow Matt Wixon on Twitter at @mattwixon. MATT WIXON Colleges tempt two-sport recruit with chance of double duty Continuedfrom Page 1C No. 2 recruit still committed to A&M, coach says Cedar Hill star receiver DaMarkus Lodge has decommitted from Texas A&M, according to a report from 247sports.com Thursday morning. But Thursday afternoon, Cedar Hill coach Jo- ey McGuire said the report was not correct. At least not yet. I just got done having lunch with DaMarkus, McGuire said. As of right now, he is still committed to Texas A&M. McGuire said that could change, acknowledging that where theres smoke, theres fire. But McGuire said Lodge had not told the Texas A&M coaches that he was reopening his recruitment. Lodge (6-2, 190), the No. 2 overall area recruit in SportsDays Class of 2015 rankings, committed to Texas A&M in June. Facing double coverage most of the time, he has managed only six catches through three games this season, but four of them were for touch- downs. As a junior, Lodge caught 72 passes 22 for touchdowns and averaged 17.4 yards per catch. He was the Offensive MVP of the 2013 5A Division II championship game. Matt Wixon Steve Hamm/Special Contributor Despite his prowess at football, Soso Jamabo (left) says his first love is basketball. Some colleges are hoping to entice him with the prospect of playing both sports.
