Bastille-Bad Blood

Within the music video there are several locations, which we have chosen to do when
creating our music video, both indoors and outdoors. The indoor locations are of large
buildings, abandoned buildings, a caf and an arcade, showing that everyday locations
can be used effectively and emotively when creating a music video. The outdoor
locations are completely different/opposite with the repetitions of streets, roads and a
dessert. I think this is used to confuse the audience, on where the lead singer is going,
due to the audience not having any clues. Most indie bands use their main lead singer
to be in music videos to reassure the audience of the band being the same; however
this is Bastilles debut music video suggesting that the audience need to put a name to
a face.

Mise en scene: Dan Smith, who is the lead singer of the band, is also the male lead in
the music video. Is wearing dark clothes to match the narrative that something is taking
over the world, and matching the dark self identity matches the mysterious character.
The makeup is natural; however at the end of the music video, the character has big
black eyes suggesting that he has been taken over. Emphasising that the music video,
is a sequel to a pervious video by the band. The leather jacket also seems to have
connotations of indie bands, the frequent shot of the lad singer wearing a leather jacket
reinforces the ideology of the iconic indie genre.

The lighting is used emotively in this music video, ambient lighting is used to identify
that character is the same, but also the lighting is natural from the machines in the
arcade and the street lamps which are aspects of normal location shooting. The low key
lighting
The techniques of the camera movements/shots emphasises the whole style of
Bastille. As Pompeii is the bands debut music video the actor/main singer is located
in the middle of the frame to show who the male lead. The variety of shots allows the
audience to seen the locations, however the movements seem to follow the male lead.
The extreme long shot of the city skyscrapers emphasises the difference between
Pompeii and a new city or even the comparison that some sort of technology is
affecting the world we live in and that it is similar to Pompeii but different. There are
lots of high angles, low angles shots, wide shots, overhead shots and zooms. At the
start of the video the zoom is used to make the male lead mysterious early on in the
video. The wide shots are used to show the different locations. Tracking shots are used
in most music videos, the overhead shots allow the audience to experience what he is
seeing, its like a rabbit in the head lights.

The editing is slower than other music videos; this is due to the beat of the music which
editors follow. However at times the editing does quicken up this is to make the
audience feel more disorientated, it doesnt make a great different to the speed of
music video. There are lots of fades used from black to the next scene, these could
suggest that there making a difference like something is with the male lead.
