CYCLONES GETTING EXPERIENCE A total of 13 Cyclones have recorded their rst career starts this year: Brett Medders, Mitchell Meyers, Devlyn Cousin, Alton Meeks, Kane Seeley, Kamari Cotton-Moya, T.J. Mutcherson, Allen Lazard, Jake Campos, P.J. Harris, Trent Taylor, Qujuan Floyd and Drake Ferch. Of the 13 Cyclones who notched their rst career starts, four are freshmen: Lazard, Campos, Cotton-Moya and Meeks. Seven Cyclone freshmen have seen signicant playing time this season. Five on defense: Kamari Cotton-Moya (DB), Robby Garcia (DL), Alton Meeks (LB), Vernell Trent (DL) and Kamari Syrie (DB). Two on offense: Allen Lazard (WR) and Jake Campos (OL). ISU punter Colin Downing is also a true freshman. JARVIS WEST IS ISUS PLAYMAKER Senior Jarvis West is one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the nation. West has already solidied himself as one of the best returners in ISU history. His career 25.7 kickoff return average ranks second all-time in school history. He returned a kickoff for a TD last year vs. Texas Tech (95 yards), tying for the fourth-longest KO return in school history. He also had a KO return for a TD called back in the 2011 Pinstripe Bowl. He is also one of the best punt returners in the nation. His season 29.3 average leads the nation. He notched his rst career punt return for a TD against Kansas State (Sept. 6), rambling 82 yards to paydirt. It was the ninth-longest punt return in school history. West has two punt returns of over 20 yards this season: 24 vs. North Dakota State; 82 vs. Kansas State. West had one of the greatest opening periods in ISU history vs. Kansas State when he caught a 17-yard TD pass, returned a punt 82 yards for a TD and threw a 29-yard TD pass in the rst half. West was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, Hornung Award Honor Roll and CFPA Punt Returner of the Week after his performance vs. Kansas State. He became just the third player in FBS or FCS to achieve the feat since 1998. He also became just the fourth player in ISU history to record a kickoff return and punt return for a TD in school history: Dick Howard, Don Ferguson and Tom Vaughn. Vaughn was the last Cyclone to do it in 1963. Overall, West has been responsible for a TD in ve different combinations in his career: TD rush, TD catch, TD pass, TD punt return, TD kickoff return, the only current player in the nation to claim this. West, who has been added to the Hornung Award Watch list, is ISUs active leader in receptions (86). He recorded a career-high eight catches vs. Kansas State. West currently leads the team in catches (15) and is second in receiving yards (137). His 15 catches equals his total from last year. ALLEN LAZARD OFF TO A GREAT START True freshman WR Allen Lazard is having a fantastic start to his Cyclone career. Lazard is the rst true freshman offensive player to record a start since WR Josh Lenz did it in 2009. Lazard was inserted into a starting role after the untimely loss to ISUs top returning receiver Quenton Bundrage, who tore his ACL in the season-opener vs. North Dakota State. Lazard has nine catches for a team-high 143 yards receiving. He registered career-highs in catches (5) and receiving yards (53) vs. Iowa. The two longest plays from scrimmage on the season are by Lazard: 48-yard catch vs. North Dakota State and a 29-yard TD catch vs. Kansas State, his rst career TD. SAM RICHARDSON IN CONTROL OF OFFENSE Junior QB Sam Richardson claimed the role of signal-caller of the Iowa State offense in fall camp and has been solid. Iowa State Football Bowl Berths: 1971, 1972, 1977, 1978, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012 Richardson has 22 career TD passes, tying for 10th all-time in school history, and has a career 58.0 percent completion clip, the third-best total in school history. He is completing a career-best 68.0 percent of his passes this season (66-97) and leads the team in rushing with 119 yards. His completion percentage is on pace to break the school mark and ranks second among Big 12 QBs and 18th in the nation. Richardson is averaging 22.0 completions per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12 and 18th in the nationally. After intermission, Richardson is completing 70 percent of his passes (37-of-53). Against Iowa, Richardson was 25-of-36 for 255 yards and 2 TDs, including completing 17-of-21 passes in the second half to help ISU overcome an 11-point halftime decit. Richardson completed a career-best 14-straight passes vs. Kansas State. Richardson also has the ability to keep plays alive with his feet. He currently leads the Cyclones in rushing with 119 yards. FARNIOK IS THE SEASONED VETERAN Senior co-captain Tom Farniok is the seasoned veteran of the Cyclones, registering a team-high 38 starts, which ranks fourth among active Big 12 players. Farniok, a two-time HM All-Big 12 selection at center, is on both the Rimington Award and the Weurffel Trophy watch lists. Along with senior RT Jacob Gannon, Farniok is one of two Cyclones on the team to start at least one game in the last four seasons. A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Farniok calls the shots at the line scrimmage and his leadership has been instrumental in the success of the Cyclone offense. Farniok was injured in the second quarter of the North Dakota State game and did not play the rest of the game, as the the Cyclone offense sputtered in the second half. Farniok went 3-0 against intrastate rival in his four years as a Cyclone. He was injured in ISUs loss to Iowa in 2013 and did not play in the game. Farniok spent the summer as an assistant strength and conditioning coach working with the Iowa State mens basketball team. He wants to be a strength and conditioning coach when his football career is over. Big 12 Active Leaders In Career Starts 1. 42, B.J. Morrissey was named the Big 12s Defensive Player of the Week after his performance vs. Iowa when he registered career highs in tackles (7), TFL (3.0) and sacks (2.0) against All-American Iowa LT Brandon Scherff. Morrissey currently leads the Big 12 and 14th nationally in sacks and ranks fth in the Big 12 and 30th nationally in TFL. Morrisseys is ISUs active career leader in sacks (5.5) and TFL (13.0). LB Miller leads the team, ranks third in the Big 12 and 38th nationally in tackles per game at 9.7. Miller is ISUs active career leader in tackles (97). 2014 CAPTAINS The Iowa State players voted on their captains and this year three players emerged as co-captains for the 2014 season. All three are seniors: E.J. Bibbs (TE), Tom Farniok (OL) and Cory Morrissey (DE). The three captains all earned All-Big 12 recognition last season and are on various national award watch lists. 2014 LONG PLAYS FROM SCRIMMAGE Yards Type Player (s) 48 Catch Lazard from Richardson (NDSU) *29 Catch Lazard from West (KSU) *27 Catch Nealy from Richardson (Iowa) 26 Catch West from Richardson (Iowa) 22 Catch Bibbs from Richardson (Iowa) *Touchdown 2014 LONGEST SCORING DRIVES Yards Plays Team/Result 92 9 Iowa/TD 85 9 Kansas State/TD 75 12 Kansas State/TD 75 10 North Dakota State/TD 2014 ISU FB RADIO AFFILIATES City Station Albia KIIC-FM 96.7 Algona KLGA-FM 92.7 Ames KASI-AM 1430 Ames KCCQ-FM 105.1 Atlantic KSOM-FM 96.5 Boone KWGB-AM 1590 Carroll KCIM-AM 1380 Cedar Falls KCNZ-AM 1650 Cedar Rapids KGYM-AM 1600 Cherokee KCHE-FM 92.1 Creston KSIB-AM 1520 Davenport KJOC-AM 1170 Denison KDSN-FM 107.1 Des Moines KDRB-FM 100.3 Faireld KMCD-AM 1570 Forest City KIOW-FM 107.3 Fort Dodge KWMT-AM 540 Fort Madison KBKB-AM 1360 Hampton KLMJ-FM 104.9 Humboldt KHBT-FM 97.7 Marshalltown KXIA-FM 101.1 Mt. REMEMBERING CURTIS BRAY Curtis Bray, who was on head coach Paul Rhoads Iowa State staff the last ve seasons, passed away suddenly from a pulmonary embolism in January at the age of 43. Bray was ISUs defensive end coach from 2009-13, tutoring multiple defensive ends to All-Big 12 recognition. Iowa State will honor Brays legacy by adorning a patch on their helmets of his initials CB throughout the entire season. ISU DE Cory Morrissey, who earned All-Big 12 honors in 2013 under Brays leadership, changed his uniform number to 58 in honor of Bray, who wore the same number in his outstanding career at Pittsburgh. DRAKE FERCH AND BEN BOESEN AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS Coach Rhoads placed senior Drake Ferch (N/LB) and junior Ben Boesen (TE) on scholarship at the end of fall camp. Both players came to ISU as recruited walk-ons and have worked their way up into the two-deep. Rhoads has placed 18 former walk-ons on scholarship in his tenure. DEALING WITH INJURIES Iowa State has already lost ve signicant contributors to season-ending injuries this season. Quenton Bundrage, ISUs leading receiver in 2013 (48 catches, 676 yards, 9 TDs), had his junior season ended on the fourth play of the 2014 season when he tore his ACL vs. North Dakota State in the season-opener. Ben Loth, ISUs backup center, went down with a knee injury on the rst day of fall camp. Special teams dynamo Levi Peters ruptured his achilles vs. Kansas State. WR P.J. Harris, who had nine catches in the rst three games, had his season ended with a knee injury vs. Iowa, along with backup offensive lineman Jacob Dunning. DAUNTING SCHEDULE Phil Steele ranks ISUs 2014 schedule as the seventh-toughest in the nation. That follows pre-season schedule ranks of sixth (2013), third (2012), sixth (2011) and rst (2010) for the Cyclones. Iowa State will yet again play one of the nations toughest schedules. The combined 2013 record of Iowa States 2014 opponents is 96-57. Only three teams (Kansas, West Virginia, TCU) posted records below .500 in 2013. Iowa States rst eight opponents (North Dakota State, 14-0; Kansas State, 8-5; Iowa, 8-5; Toledo, 7-5; Baylor, 11-2; Oklahoma State, 10-3; Texas, 8-5; Oklahoma, 11-2) were a combined 77-27 in 2013.
