Blood and Black Roses
Chapter 1Life is a Pain
Kai ran his hand through his tousled, platinum blonde hair as he reclined on the couch inhis dorm. Only one thing went through his mind these days.
Miya, Miya, Miya.
Like any other sweet-blood she smelled…. nice but there was something about her that was different. NormallyKai had a million things going through his mind at once and it never bothered him. Now the onlything on his mind was Miya.“Ugh,” he groaned.“What is it?” asked Riku looking up from her magazine. Kai looked over at Riku andtook himself back to the day they first met. It was in Rome, at the Vatican oddly enough. He wassitting in the front row of the popes gathering in the Sistine chapel and she sat next to him.
You don’t look like someone who I would expect to find here.”
She had said showinghim her fangs.
“Nor you,”
He replied.
“Wanna go grab a bite?”
She said looking towards the people around her.
“I’m a vegetarian,”
He replied. After that they went their separate ways. However abouttwo days later she swooped down on the balcony of his home and beat at his door panicked.
Please! I need to come in,”
She was yelling he opened the door and she fell in andimmediately grabbed him.
“Their coming! I had no were else to go! We need to leave!”
she hadsputtered. Kai could already smell it. Silver and holy water. Hunters were coming for them.
“Alright let’s go,”
He said motioning towards the door. Then Riku drew out her wings, they had been badly burned. It was a wonder how she had made it to his home.
“Alright, you flying is out…. Quick get on my back!”
he said. She leapt lithely onto his back and wrapped her legs around his waist. He had taken off from the balcony and then arrived in America two dayslater. Since then they had been best friends.Riku had taken to “vegetarianism” without a problem and had lived with Kai ever since.“Give me your hand,” she said. Kai stretched out his arm and she put his finger in her mouth. She drew blood with one prick of her fangs and sat back. “Miya again?” she said. Henodded slowly and then looked away. She crossed her legs and looked him straight in the eyes.“Tell her,” she said simply.“I can’t,” he said.“For god’s sake Kai! You’ve been thinking about her nonstop for three weeks straight! If you don’t say something I will!” a feral growl escaped Kai in annoyance. He got up and turnedtowards the dojo in the side room.“I need to let off some steam,” he said. Riku sighed and followed him into the room. Riku picked up a pair of silver daggers and Kai lifted a colt .45 from its box.“Silvered?” Riku asked.“Don’t tempt me,” Kai replied lifting a clip from the box labeled copper/iron mix. Hegracefully slid the clip into place and locked it down. “Ready?” he asked Riku who nodded. Inone fluid movement he clicked the safety off and took three shots at Riku. She spun under them and then reversed her momentum throwing herself at Kai, who senttwo more shots at her at a dizzying velocity. A normal human wouldn’t even be able to see the

bullet but Riku was a Vampire. She not only saw them but sent them ricocheting off of her knives in different directions.Kai rocked back on his heels and ducked under the flying torpedo that was Riku. Inanother instant he drew his silver long sword from its display and was parrying attack after attack at a blinding speed.Riku ducked under the long sword and through Kai’s legs coming up behind him. Kaisprang forward and landed in a roll coming up just in time to block the next set of blindingattacks. He ducked under one blade and dodged another just in time to parry the other blade’snext attack. He stooped low and bit his hand drawing blood from his wrist. He threw his arm outsending a spiraling spear of crystallized blood towards Riku and she jumped back. “You want to play with bloodlines huh?” she said laughing. “This will be very fun,” she added.Kai growled under his breath. While his bloodline allowed him to turn his blood into adeadly and unstoppable projectile or be used to construct, Riku was the bane of all Vampires. Her bloodline allowed her to see into the minds of anything she drank from. Not just that but it also allowed her to copy the bloodlines of Vampires she drank from as well. Kai jumpedhigh and brought his long sword down to go for an easy finish but Riku was ready. She kneltdown and blood shot out of her body, crystallized and became like a porcupine shield for her.“Crap!” he said, rolling off to the side. Riku laughed and retracted the spikes and thenthrew a carbon copy of the blood lance at Kai. Kai leapt back and then dropped his sword. “Youwin!” his said. Riku laughed and then started walking to the art room.“You’re such a chicken,” she said. She slid open another set of paper doors and revealeda room full of paintings and drawings. They walked around the room looking at each other’s artwork and Riku stopped at one on the left side of the wall. It was an easel painting with a beautiful young woman with jet back hair.Riku traced the pale face of the girl with her fingers and stoked the floral border of the painting nostalgically. The woman had dark black eyes and was holding a rose the color of nightin her hand. “I remember when you painted this one,” she said.“Yeah, you were so excited you could barley sit still long enough for me to draw you,”Kai replied.Riku looked at him and said, “My eyes were red then, I remember.”“I had always envisioned you as a bloodless though,” he replied. Riku looked back at the portrait of her and remembered the days before she had met Kai. She had been wild and feral. She had never been able to stay in one place for more than a week at a time without beinghunted. Kai had given the gift of order to her life.“Come on, it’s time for class,” Riku said turning away from the portrait. Kia followed her out and shut the door softly behind him. Outside the air was warm, but so was most things tothem. As they walked through the courtyard they could hear everything around them. The sharpwhispers being traded between students yards away, laughter from the children’s playground blocks away, and the cars as they drove in front of the gates. It had been three years since they had arrived in Japan from America. Three years sincetheir plane had touched down in Osaka and two since they had entered the Vamperias academyfor the gifted youth. Kai turned his head toward a group of giggling day class girls and he smiled. They blushed and bowed, quickly walking away.“They irritate me,” came a tinkling growl from behind them. Kai laughed softly and spunaround.

“Good to see you again Suki,” he said embracing the red eyes vampire.“I wish I could say I felt the same way,” she replied laughing.“How have you been?” Riku asked. Suki pulled her glossy black hair over her ear.“I had a close call in Paris but I’m none worse for the wear,” she said. She was distinctlyof Asian descent. She was pale, of course, but she had an underlying glow. “The headmaster sentfor me, in any case, otherwise I might have stayed in Beijing a little longer,” she said sighing.“You’d better go see what he wants,” Riku replied.“I guess,” she said. She turned toward the main house and started to walk away. “Oh, bythe way,” she said without stopping or turning around. “I got you guys’ souvenirs.” She tossedtwo things over her shoulder, which Kai caught in the air. It was a bottle of rose perfume andsilver Miao Dao. “Be careful with the perfume. It disorients vampires after a while. I’m immuneto it though. There’s a sample of my blood on the back,” she called and soon walked through theheadmasters’ gate.“What was that about?” Riku asked. Kai shrugged and then looked at the great clock tower on the eastern edge of the grounds. “We’ve got to go,” she said reading his exact thoughts.~*****************~“The history of vampires is a limited scope of trivial events limited to small scaleuprisings and prosecutions. We as a race have all but disappeared entirely from the minds of men. Our secrecy has become more than a mere comfort, as it used to be, and more of anecessity,” Professor Artemis said, writing examples of the different weapons that were a danger to vampires now.“Different events in our history have shown that even with our massive capability tocomprehend detail, we as a race are limited by single mindedness. One example being during theRomanian rebellion that took not only hundreds of lives of vampires but thousands of innocentsas well.Miraculously the bell rang and the entire room seemed to snap up all at once, waitingonly for the dismissal of their teacher.“You may leave,” he said, waving a hand over his shoulder. In half a second the entireclass was gone.“Free!” Kai yelled stretching up to his full height. It was seven in the morning and theyhad walked into the courtyard, still shadowed from mornings first light. “Finally! Two months of no classes, no peers, and no stupid history of vampirism!” he gloated, his voice like wind chimes.“Ahem,” Riku said, putting her hand on her hip. “Don’t forget the crusade,” she said, looking him straight in the eye.“That stupid competition, hah! It doesn’t bother me,” Kai replied.“You’re not going to throw it again this year?” Suki asked, coming up behind Kai.“There’s a lot riding on this year’s competition,” she added.“Glory, fame, and the respect of all of the day class girls? We’ve already got that made,”he laughed. “I think we should skip it this year, go to Paris, you know?” he said eying Riku.Suddenly he tensed, his muscles locking and his breathing stopped.“Hello Kai,” came a voice from behind him. Kai turned slowly to face a girl in a whiteuniform. The day class standard was on her shoulder. She had dark brown hair and green eyesthat seemed like they would glow in the dark.
