Global Youth Service Day
is an annual campaign that celebratesand mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning.Established in 1988 in the United States and in 2000 globally, GYSDis the largest service event in the world and is now celebrated inover 100 countries. On GYSD, children and youth address theworld’s most critical issues in partnership with families, schools,community and faith-based organizations, businesses, and gov-ernments.The goals of Global Youth Service Day are to:

Mobilize

youth to identify and address the needs of their communities
 
ο
organizations to provide opportunities for youth engagement;
 
ο
 
media and policy makers to promote and raise awareness of young
 
people as assets and resources to their communities.

Support
 
ο
youth on a lifelong path of service and civic engagement;
 
ο
schools and organizations through training and technical assistance,
 
grants, and resources that enable them to engage youth.

Sustain

C
ommunity improvement through year-round engagement of youth asleaders and problem-solvers.
 
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) 2008-2009 was organized by Youth Service Americawith the Global Youth Action Network and an International Coordinating Committee.
Youth Service America
(YSA) improves communi-ties by increasing the number and the diversity ofyoung people, ages 5-25, serving in substantiveroles.Founded in 1986, YSA supports a global culture ofengaged youth committed to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership, and achieve-ment.www.ysa.org 
Global Youth Action Network
