Life is tough, a struggle at times, just

Hello everybody. I hope this Edition finds you doing well. It is the
beginning of Fall and I for one am very happy to see it come. It was
really getting tough to breathe outside in the sweltering heat we was
getting. And now its time to plant those new plants out in the yard. Nice overcast,
a few storms, cleans the air. It inspires me to get more done.
When I was sitting here thinking of what to share with you, I was contemplating my feelings as
towards the difference of bringing up a discussion of a topic or two.
Well, they starting bombing ISIS locations this past Sunday. I am glad to see our country stand
up and take action to destroying this evil madness. I know this newspaper is small in numbers
compared to what we once was. However, I feel a personal duty to inform you, the reader, of
whats going on that will have an affect on us. Whether it be local county news or world-wide
news, I do my best to give you things to talk about. It is going to take a good number of Men to
possibly need to form an alliance for the safety of Walton county citizens. I know we have depu-
ties, but there is not enough to be able to fight against an ISIS threat to our hospitals or schools.
Im only stating facts from what I read and what I know from experience.
This information I write and tell you about is NOT intended to cause a riot or panic, but a realism
to a threat to most all of our lives, for years to come.
There has been numerous videos on computer that show from peoples cell phones what Radical
Muslim groups already in Dearborn, Michigan enforcing Sharia Law. Yes, they hang in groups,
walk the streets and rush upon you to beat you, slap your wife/ girlfriend because she is not cov-
ered as they say females should be. There have been numerous occasions in parts of this country
that these Men are cutting off limbs of Americans, just to have them suffer? This is barbaric and a
bit tough to write you this stuff.
I do this, because I like each one of you that appreciates my labor I put into each edition I print.
The way we communicate may be different but I tell it like it is. Just ask me. Yes, I love a good
debate. Throw race, religion or politics. It doesnt matter to me as long as we both walk away with
a better knowledge of the topic. No one likes to hear that Obamas wife, is a Man/tranny, but its
true. (She) cannot have children as they adopted both them girls to help fit the picture for the
White House. Look it up, there is too much evidence to be denied. She also recently just admitted
that Obama was born in Kenya, I guess the try to come clean at some time. Since they are near the
end of their horrendous term. So, where are the nay-sayers about this when it was all brought to
light during his first campaign? No one thought it could be. We have been lied to about so much in
the past 5 yrs, maybe even from Bush too. But at least there was a mission statement and Obamas
withdrawal of all troops back-fired and has now motivated the enemy. The enemy has declared
War on us, in case you didnt know.
Maybe you are foolish enough to trust our govt. but I seem to have seen more negative involve-
ment from the govt. you cannot trust anyone in the govt, even the IRS, CIA, FBI and what about
the huge number of police brutality happening everyday across our nation? Main stream Media is
so afraid to say the truth, show the truth, speak the truth. I feel stronger the need to keep this news-
paper going based on these facts alone. Most newspapers around wont say much truth for fear of
punishment or whatever.
We will be dealing with these people for many years to come.
Men better be prepared to defend the women and children of our nation, individually. If not
thugs will. Small towns has its group of trouble in its own way.
Does anyone know if our school superintendant has a plan for such a thing could happen. Again,
just to get you prepared, you must have a plan. Do you think one officer at school (the only person
with a gun), can really protect hundreds of students? Now a days, I would be listening close to
what the students are talking about, (when your not teaching). That is how home-brewed killers are
formed. All based on a false idea of religion, if thats what they want to say.
To me, killing is killing. Man or beast, its death.
Whats worse is that while our youth play games and fool around in school, spirit stuff. They
enemy, is kids the same age being told to become a Martyr, a hero in their Gods eyes by killing us
all. Are we too only going to react once hit? This is not a joke or fantasy I dreamt up for you.
I asked a few editions back, about what are our kids being taught about History of the USA? The
reasons to be proud of, the ones before you who died for you to have a life style as you wish. Ive
not received an answer of importance. It may come a day to teach your child how to shoot a gun
and its safety procedures. Will it be taught in classroom environment? Or just parents discretion?
Just like the switch is now illegal to use? Parents rights are diminishing too.
They have sex education class, what about real-life events happening today? Do you feel strong
enough about this arising problem to insist that our schools here in Walton change some of the
curriculum? I do. Those kids now in school will be making decisions for us when we are supposed
to be to old to do much, but shoot a gun. How does that settle with you? Tomorrow?
Most parents I know dont let the kids know about these real-life facts. They think as long as they
are happy..Safety from predators?, how to fight off an attacker?..sounds like importance
classes to teach. Maybe even a few on basic survival skills, if ever separated from your safety net
of people or classroom. If not taught properly, they will learn from each other while making some
dangerous situations. They are kids, they know what they are taught. Internet has more than you.
How about a few veterans groups form here in Walton county to assist officers if a problem does
occur in this magnitude? I would be proud to be part of a unit that defends and protects.
Instill our American values or else our children will follow the internet and think ISIS is good to
join or something stupid as such. Teach self-defense too. Women in most danger at this time.
BTW the lady runs Karate in Freeport Community Center, shes very world traveled and it
would be an investment in your kids future. The knowledge of how to fight, at any level, only be-
comes a bad thing to those other individuals who will feel the pain, before the victim does.
People, I teach my own children these mechanisms, for them to be prepared for the what-if
situations. Those of you with your head in the sand, will fall away as a bystander does.

Healthmark offers new service
By Ron Kelley

Healthmark Regional Medical Center (HRMC) in DeFuniak Springs is expand-
ing its services. The hospital is now offering physical therapy Monday through
Friday, available through the hospital, clinic and physician referrals.
HRMC Chief of Operations Gerald Beard announced the addition of physical
therapy services under the direction of Freddie Kolmetz, a state-licensed physical
therapist. We are delighted to announce the continued expansion of services on
our hospital campus, said Beard. Physical therapy will now be offered at the
hospital campus. It is often an important part of the healing process and now our
patients can avoid the inconvenience and expense of traveling out of town.
HRMC can provide physical therapy to anyone needing post-op care, therapy
after a serious fall, motor vehicle accident or those suffering from knee, shoulder,
neck or lower back pain. Therapy can include massage, electric stimulation, free
weights and resistance training, parallel bars, staircase trainers and more, all de-
signed to help promote the patients mobility.
Regaining physical health is one of the most important things that anyone can
do to increase their quality of life, said Beard. Our physical therapy team can
help you get back on your feet and can also establish a physical maintenance plan
to keep you at your best.
Freddie Kolmetz is an experienced physical therapist and has been associated
with several health care facilities in northwest Florida, including out-patient clin-
ics in Panama City and Chipley, as well as North Okaloosa Medical Center in
Crestview. The physical therapy staff will also include Chauncey Belser and
Kacey Zorn, said Kolmetz. Our therapists are experienced, highly trained pro-
fessionals and we are so glad to be part of the team here at Healthmark Re-
gional.
Although having physical therapy as a regular component of hospital is a recent
addition to the many services already available, Kolmetz and his team have al-
ready been providing physical therapy for Healthmark Home Health patients and
for the hospitals swing bed patients. A swing bed is basically short-term reha-
bilitation at the hospital under the care and supervision of physicians.
Physical therapy is available at Healthmark Regional Medical Center, Monday
through Friday. For more information about the service, call (850) 951-4500.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 48 percent of
Americans lack emergency supplies in the event of a disaster. The Department reminds
Floridians and visitors there are many resources available to aid in building an emer-
gency supply kit and creating a family plan, as well as online and smart phone tools to

Ebola Cases Could Reach 1.4 Million
in Months, CDC Predicts

Isolating infected patients is the best way to stem the
epidemic, health officials say
Infections from the Ebola epidemic in Liberia and Sierra Leone could
soar to 1.4 million cases by mid-January unless the global community
mounts a rapid response to the West African crisis, according to esti-
mates released Tuesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
This projection is based on a new CDC model that assumes people are
being infected with Ebola at a geometrically increasing rate, and that
there are 2.5 times more cases than are being reported, the agency said
in its new report.
However, this worst-case scenario may be averted, given the interna-
tional relief response to the epidemic during the past month, CDC Di-
rector Dr. Tom Frieden said during a morning news conference.
The reported projections are based on numbers from the end of August,
and since then the United States and other nations have stepped up their
relief efforts.
"One of the things that's been so striking is how fluid things have been
on the ground," Frieden said. "Even a week or two ago, I would have
expected things to look differently than they do now."
Ebola cases in West Africa currently have reached an estimated 5,800
infections in people and more than 2,800 deaths, according to the World
Health Organization.
The new CDC model specifically focuses on the value of isolating
Ebola patients to prevent spread of the deadly virus. The agency found
that up to now, total Ebola cases are doubling approximately every 20
days in the two countries because people with the virus are coming into
contact with healthy people and infecting them.
If seven out of 10 Ebola patients were isolated in their homes or a treat-
ment center, the epidemic in both Liberia and Sierra Leone could be
broken by mid-January -- a drastically different projection than the
worst-case scenario, officials said.
"If you get enough people effectively isolated, the epidemic can be
stopped," Frieden said. "Related to that, when you reach a higher
enough number, the number of cases plummets rapidly, almost as rap-
idly as the exponential rise we're seeing now."
Walton TDC. Has approved $425,000
budgeted for the 30A and Hwy. 98 intersection
where Shades is located.
I heard the news on TV, that they intend to make
it pedestrian safe and bike riding friendly. They also
stated that it would be considered a gate-way into
Walton county coming from Bay county.
They are currently hashing out the details to im-
prove the looks and safety of that intersection.
If you notice along the north side of hwy. 98 there
are several businesses already open and more are
being built as we write this. It will help with the
amount of people our area has seen recently.
Domestic: parties involved, to include two chil-
dren ages 14 and 11, Tara McCullers, 32, was
charged with 3 counts of aggravated assault
with a deadly weapon and 2 counts of child
abuse. McCullers intentionally struck/rammed
Jerald Hansleys truck with her car, she attempted
to intimidate and/or scare Hansley who is the fa-
ther of her children and did put fear in both chil-
dren who stated they were scared during the inci-
dent. The 14 year old child, who was in the vehi-
cle with McCullers, hit her head during one of the
intentional strikes of the two vehicles but did not
sustain injuries.

First Annual Bayfest:
The first annual Bayfest was a huge
success, thanks to the Freeport
Planters Society and Mayor Russ
Barley. Festival goers were treated
to everything from alligator-on-a-
stick to piles of curly fries. Local
artists toted their wares while local
bands entertained the crowd with
music. Children played in bouncy
houses after having their faces
painted and one could even get in a
Zumba class while eating barbeque
straight from the smoker. Stinkys
Fish Camp won first place in the
Gumbo cook off. Mayor Barley was
excited about the first annual festi-
val and plans to meet with the Plant-
ers Society to debrief and plan for
next years event. If you didnt
make it this year, plan ahead for
next year and become part of a new
Freeport tradition.

STOP IN AT THE PRISSY HEN AND SEE WHATS NEW
GOP Congressman: Obama Said
The 'Dumbest Thing An American President Has Ever Said'
(I rewrote this in our words!)
What was President Obama thinking when he gave a speech on
the ISIS situation? Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) thinks that the
speech in which President Barack Obama laid out his strategy
for combating the Islamic State may have contained the single
dumbest thing an American President has ever said.
Duncan was referring to Obamas remark that ISIL is not Is-
lamic. Obama could not even get the terrorist group name cor-
rect. Obama then went on to say that no religion condones the
killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISILs victims have
been Muslim.
'The Islamic State is not Islamic' might just be single dumbest
thing an American President has ever said, Duncan wrote on
his Facebook page on Sept. 11, the day after Obama's speech.
I was disappointed in the President's remarks and disheartened
that he took an issue that could have generated strong bipartisan
agreement but instead presented us with a plan that raises many
concerns. In my opinion, the President's speech on combating
ISIS was 'JV' at best.
While Duncan dismissed Obamas speech, several Republi-
cans have voiced support for the presidents plan to fight the
terrorist organization. 39% of Americans support the way Presi-
dent Obama is handling the ISIS situation while 48% disap-
prove. More than half the population finds Obamas overall
presidency to be a failure.
The resurfacing of County Road 1084 from just northeast of U.S. Highway
331 to State Road 83 will begin on September 17, 2014. This project is slated to take
place over a 140 day time schedule.
This project will include work associated with the construction of roadways such as
asphalt paving, earthwork, maintenance of traffic, sodding, guardrail replacement,
pavement striping and signing. The contractor will maintain at least one travel lane
open at all times during all other construction activities, with minimal delays to the
traveling public.
Roadways are to have two-way traffic open during all non-working hours, weekends,
and holidays.

trator, at 850-892-8108.

This was written by a Canadian woman, but oh
how it also applies to the U.S.A., U.K. and Australia .
THIS ONE PACKS A FIRM PUNCH
Written by a housewife. This is one ticked off lady...
"Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or
was it not, started by Islamic people who brought it to our
shores on September 11, 2001 and have continually threat-
ened to do so since?
Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered
that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac
from the capitol of the USA and in a field in Pennsyl-
vania ? Or not?
Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a
horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?
Do you think I care about four U. S. Marines urinating on
some dead Taliban insurgents? And I'm supposed to care
that a few Taliban were claiming to be tortured by a justice
system of a nation they are fighting against in a brutal In-
surgency.
I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle
East, start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief of
which, is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan.
I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for
hacking off Nick Berg's head, while Berg screamed
through his gurgling slashed throat.
I'll care when the cowardly so-called insurgents in Af-
ghanistan , come out and fight like men, instead of disre-
specting their own religion by hiding in Mosques and be-
hind women and children.
I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves
up in search of Nirvana, care about the innocent children
within range of their suicide Bombs. I'll care when the
Canadian media stops pretending that their freedom of
Speech on stories, is more important than
the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families
waiting at home, to hear about them when something hap-
pens.
In the meantime, when I hear a story about a CANADIAN
soldier roughing up an Insurgent terrorist to obtain infor-
mation, know this: I don't care.
When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when
he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped,
you can take it to the bank: I don't care. Shoot him again.
When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a
prayer mat, and fed 'special' food, that is paid for by my tax
dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being
'mishandled,' you can absolutely believe, in your heart of
hearts: I don't care.
And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled
'Koran' and other times 'Quran.' Well, Jimmy Crack Corn
you guessed it. I don't care!!
If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to
all your E-mail Friends. Sooner or later, it'll get to
the people responsible for this ridiculous behavior!
And may I add: Some people spend an entire lifetime won-
dering, if during their life on earth, they made a difference
in the world. But, the Soldiers don't have that problem.
One last thought for the day:
Only five defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
1. Jesus Christ
2. The British Soldier.
3. The Canadian Soldier.
4. The US Soldier, and
5. The Australian Soldier
One died for your soul, the other four, for you and your
children's Freedom.

WALTON COUNTY DISTRICT 4 COMMIS-
SIONER SARA COMANDER AND PUBLIC
WORKS TO HOST COMMUNITY CLEAN-
UP DAY AT CHOCTAW BEACH PARK
DeFuniak Springs, FL District 4 Commissioner
Sara Comander will be hosting a community clean-up
day at Choctaw Beach Park on Saturday, September
27 from 8:00am to 2:00pm.
Since taking her seat on the Commission in 2006,
Commissioner Comander has been hosting commu-
nity clean-up events in her district three to four times
per year in locations including Choctaw Beach, Villa
Tasso, Freeport, Woodlawn and Santa Rosa Beach.
According to Comander, It is important for me to
host these events for those who do not have the means
to take their large items to the Countys landfill. This
provides a good service to the community and also
helps them clean up their neighborhoods.
In addition to the availability of access that these days
provide, they also help to eliminate the amount of
illegal dumping that sometimes occurs throughout the
County. In the past, some residents have resorted to
taking large items and disposing of them in the local
parks or forests.
For this event, dumpsters will be provided for Walton
County residents to dump trash, yard debris, tires,
appliances and other miscellaneous items. A crew and
equipment will be available to off-load heavy
items. Recycling trailers will also be available.
Items that will not be accepted will be poisons, pesti-
cides, paints, thinners, gasoline and other flammables.
It is amazing to me what some people throw
away. Items range from sporting goods to furniture
and collectibles to historical items, said Coman-
der. I also make an effort to be present at all of these
events. It gives me the opportunity to meet with local
residents and discuss with them any comments or
questions they may have in regard to the County.
For additional information about this or other commu-
nity clean-up events, please contact either Commis-
sioner Comanders office at 850-835-4834 or the
County Landfill at 850-892-8180.

My name is Egg and I'm a survivor just like my
mother. Ever since my mother was old enough to get
pregnant, she was used for breeding. All she wanted
was a safe, clean home where she would be loved.
That's really all anyone wants, right?
My siblings, Early and Easter, and I were born in a
dirty house and lived in conditions so bad, I'll spare you the details. My
mother only wanted us to be safe. She prayed and prayed that someone
would save us all and finally someone did.
Now we are living at Alaqua Animal Refuge in a clean place with lots of
love and care. The doctor is treating our skin and ear infections and we
will be here a while as we build our immune systems. After we are all
spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccines, we will be able to find our
forever homes. No one will ever be able to use us the way they used our
mother. Please donate to Alaqua so they can continue to save families like
ours. Thank you.

Anyone who's micromanaging as the week begins isn't going to endear themselves to you, and any detail-oriented
work you do might have a few holes in it. You're thinking about bigger things -- so sue you, right? Luckily your
world gets into step with you from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday. The reaching out you do now is amply
rewarded with wonderful and weird connections, entertaining moments and all sorts of fun.
Use that ample brainpower of yours to do a little extra investigating as the week begins -- and checking in
with your gut instinct wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Not everything's on the surface now. Go out of your
way to, well, go out of your way. Getting off your usual beaten paths leads to fun and funny new situations,
which leads to inspiration, which leads to ... you get the picture.
If you're thinking about taking some sort of plunge as the week begins, well, why not? If you've tested the
water with your toe, what are you waiting for? You've got a cosmic opportunity to dispense with the old
and bring in the new. Just don't toss the proverbial baby out with the bathwater -- there's some important
stuff to keep.
Your physical being needs extra attention, both in terms of staying (or getting) healthy and avoiding acci-
dents. Taking a look at things from the other person's perspective -- whether that's your boss, a friend or the
barista at your favorite coffee shop -- gives you a much better point of view.
The beginning of the week looks like a delightful time to be you -- you can accomplish just about anything
you put your mind to, and matters of the heart are definitely favored. How will you use that extra oomph,
that bonus charm? From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, you're being pulled in two directions. You're
liable to overdo it, work-wise, or slack off; you burn the candle at both ends or simply blow out the flame.
If you expect people to read your mind at the beginning of the week, you're setting yourself up for disap-
pointment and conflict. Why not say it -- and say it loud and clear? You're looking good, feeling good and
your brain's functioning at a high level to boot. Your follow-through may be a little lacking, though, so set
reminders, leave yourself notes and get help from a more in-step friend.
You're all over the little things as the week begins, and when the little things include sweet, funny and
meaningful connections with those around you, well, the big things can take care of themselves. Though,
your ideas are likely to clash with a certain someone's. Will you clamp onto your point of view, or will you
pry that mind open enough to consider their thoughts?
Put yourself on a severe weather watch as the week begins, because a serious brainstorm is on the way. For
even better results, get a few smart, creative friends in on it. You can take whatever ideas, feelings and in-
stincts you've been having to a deeper, more meaningful level. If you're sharing your findings, though, be
prepared for responses that hit home.
You may be focusing on the little things to an extreme as the week begins -- or, on the other hand, you
might find the details so numerous as to be overwhelming. The point? Your usual balance is off -- when
you're able to walk any tightrope in a spangled outfit, looking fabulous and juggling all sorts of lovely
things. These are in-the-spotlight days for you, so enjoy the glow.
Plans you make and information you unearth as the week begins serve you extra well, so get organized and
do a little research of whatever sort is most important (for work? romance? life in general?). You're operat-
ing at a deeper level and while you may not feel much like talking about it, a discussion with a trusted, em-
pathetic friend can be incredibly fruitful.
There are at least two sides to every story as the week gets going, and you're delving into all the angles and
fitting different perspectives together. Good for you -- get someone else in on the act to help (and to make it
more fun). Get ready to accentuate the positive. Things can't always go off without a hitch, but look for les-
sons learned and all's not lost. If you come up with an especially creative idea, the star will send you a push.
Apply a little extra energy to work as the week begins, and the rewards could multiply exponentially. Putting
some thought into planning for your future also brings big benefits. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday,
however, other areas of your life could use your attention. How are those relationships? Or, for that matter, how's
the laundry? Get caught up with chores and important people -- work can take a back seat.
Dear Editor,
It was a pleasure to meet you at the Bayfest.
I must say that your car was my favorite one
there. I hope they continue to have bigger and
better Bayfest, but thought it was good for the
first one.
Let the Mayor know, nice job.

Dear Editor,
I am so happy that you have recruited Ms.
Rian. I liked her column and the way she
writes. Its people like you who give opportu-
nity that no one else would. That makes you
and your newspaper so special for us here in
Freeport. 6yrs and counting. Great!
Keep up the good work. Good things will
come to you. Stay persistent.
Kathy Powell

Dear Editor,
Did WZEP have a problem with you sharing
their news? The reason I ask is there wasnt
any news from them. If they told you no for
some reason, can you explain?
I didnt feel it took away from your style not
having them, but I would surely stop listening
to them all together, if they did.
Small towns should not be so divided. They
have ZEP news in all other newspapers, Im
sure your readers would like to know if
youve been shunned, to try and rid you?
Robert J. Slade

I can only comment that yes, they did say I
no longer have the permission. Why? No
distinct reason Of me doing anything wrong.
Free advertisement for them lost.
I was as confused as most of you are.
Welcome to the Big Time, I guess.
We will be just fine as we roll in the future.

A Tale worth Sharing:
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from
his lungs.

His bed was next to the room's only window.
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the
military service, where they had been on vacation.
Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time
by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be
broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while
children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every
color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of
the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man could not hear the band -he could see it in his mind's eye as the
gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their
baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his
sleep.
She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the
window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable,
she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world
outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.
It faced a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had
described such wonderful things outside this window.
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'
Epilogue:
There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich,
just count all the things you have that money can't buy.
'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.
Concern over US concessions as Iran seeks to
leverage ISIS issue in nuke talks
Republican lawmakers are raising alarm that Secretary of State John Kerry
is putting too much on the table in talks over Iran's nuclear program -- as
Tehran reportedly tries to leverage its cooperation in the Islamic State
crisis in return for nuclear concessions from the U.S. and its allies.
The White House denies that any such trade-off is in the works.
"The United States will not be in a position of trading aspects of Iran's
nuclear program to secure commitments to take on ISIL," White House
Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday, using an alternate acronym for
the Islamic State. "These two issues are entirely separate."
But, even before the Islamic State aspect surfaced, Republicans already
had voiced concern that Washington may be softening its negotiating
position in the nuclear talks.
In a letter sent to Kerry on Friday, 31 Republican senators expressed grave
concerns about the new negotiations.
Warning of "troubling nuclear concessions to Iran," they asked whether
the administration would accept the mere "disconnection" of centrifuges as
an alternative to dismantling them.
Indeed, as the latest round of talks began at the United Nations on Friday,
diplomats said that a new U.S. proposal on the table focuses on removing
piping connecting the centrifuges. That would allow the U.S. leeway on
modifying demands that Iran cut the number of centrifuge machines from
19,000 to no more than 1,500.
Only a proposal for now, the plan would allow the Iranians to claim that
they did not compromise on vows that they would never emasculate their
enrichment capabilities, while keeping intact American demands that the
program be downgraded to a point where it could not be quickly turned to
making bombs.
Top Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, are in New
York this week for the U.N. General Assembly session. Kerry met over
the weekend with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif, and
emerged saying Washington was intent on advancing negotiations focused
on reducing Iran's atomic activities in exchange for an end to nuclear-
related sanctions. Fueling concern among Republicans over the course of
the discussions was a Reuters report over the weekend, raising the Islamic
State aspect.

Festival Season
-Rian Lyday
Festival season has officially
begun, beginning with Freeports
first annual Bayfest this past weekend. Here in north Florida, we know how to do festival
season rightwe celebrate everything from the possum to the peanut. Who doesnt love a
good festival, especially festival food?! Why is it that everything tastes better on a stick or
deep fried in oil? Walking around, looking at piles of crafts you never knew you needed
and eating fried bacon-on-a-stick is as close to heaven as you can get. TIME magazine
completed a poll asking what people loved to eat the most at fairs/festivals. Here is the top
ten list (remember, calories do not count at festivals, neither does powdered sugar or dough
all over your face!):
Fried anythingto be fair, this should be in a category all by itself. Some of the favorite
foods people enjoy deep fried are; bacon, Oreos, candy bars, Coca Cola, ravioli, caviar,
Twinkies, Kool-Aid, beer, Pop Tarts, Frito pie, and a club salad. The 2011 Wisconsin State
Fair offered the ultimate fried concoction: clumps of deep fried butter.
Funnel CakesCombining the basic goodness of fried dough and powdered sugar, the
funnel cake is different from other fair treats because of its unique shape, which maximizes
surface area for sugar and allows for convenient sharing with its easily divisible compo-
nents.
Pieeven though this isnt fried and doesnt come on a stick, this is considered the most
traditional festival food.
Caramel applesthese treats need no explanation!
Cotton CandyThe woven delicacy was first sampled by the American palate in 1904
during the St. Louis World's Fair.
The BIZARRE.Festivals provide the opportunity for people to eat things they normally
wouldnt and not feel guilty about it. The most creative fair foods combine two relatively
normal food items into something cringe-worthy, yet delicious. For example, Kool-Aid
pickles. No surprises here: just simple sour green dills dunked into the sugary red liquid.
Then we have the unlikely Krispy Kreme burger. Think of the greasiest cheeseburger you
can imagine, toss the sesame seed bun in the trash and wrap it between two glazed donuts.
What about the hot beef sundae, found at the Indiana State Fair? It looks like its ice cream
cousin, but instead consists of a hunk of marinated beef slathered in gravy, and topped with
mashed potatoes, cheese and a cherry tomato, that is.
Corn on the cobwhy this common food tastes so much better at a festival is a mystery
but one I will continue to tackle all festival season long.
Elephant EarsFried flattened dough, butter, sugar, cinnamonenough said.
Corn dogsby stuffing a hotdog in simple cornmeal batter, a festival favorite was born.
This treat is on a stick and packed with enough calories to compete with any fried favorite.
Food on a stickYou can now have a whole meal on a stick at festivals. Start with an
appetizer: a deep-fried pickle on a stick or a skewered peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich.
Move to the main course and test out the innovative spaghetti and meatballs on a stick a
pasta-filled meatball, covered in sauce and deep-fried. Or, for a more traditional meal,
maybe you'd like some skewered pork chops, steak or even bacon-wrapped turkey.
