1 Introduction
Welcome to L
A
TEX2
ε
, the new standard version of the L
A
TEX Document Prepa-ration System. This document describes how to take advantage of the new features of L
A
TEX,and how to process your old L
A
TEX documents with L
A
TEX2
ε
. However, thisdocument is only a brief introduction to the new facilities and is intended forauthors who are already familiar with the old version of L
A
TEX. It is
not
areference manual for L
A
TEX2
ε
nor is it a complete introduction to L
A
TEX.
1.1 L
A
TEX2
ε
—The new L
A
TEX release
The previous version of L
A
TEX was known as L
A
TEX 2.09. Over the years manyextensions have been developed for L
A
TEX. This is, of course, a sure sign of itscontinuing popularity but it has had one unfortunate result: incompatible L
A
TEXformats came into use at different sites. This included ‘standard L
A
TEX 2.09’,L
A
TEX built with the
New Font Selection Scheme
(
NFSS
),
Sli
TEX,
AM
-L
A
TEX,and so on. Thus, to process documents from various places, a site maintainerwas forced to keep multiple versions of the L
A
TEX program. In addition, whenlooking at a source file it was not always clear for which format the documentwas written. To put an end to this unsatisfactory situation, L
A
TEX2
ε
has been produced; itbrings all such extensions back under a single format and thus prevents the pro-liferation of mutually incompatible dialects of L
A
TEX 2.09. With L
A
TEX2
ε
the‘new font selection scheme’ is standard and, for example,
amsmath
(formerly2

the
AM
-L
A
TEX format) or
slides
(formerly the
Sli
TEX format) are simply ex-tensions, which may be loaded by documents using the same base format. The introduction of a new release also made it possible to add a small numberof often-requested features and to make the task of writing packages and classessimpler.
1.2 L
A
TEX3—The long-term future of L
A
TEX
L
A
TEX2
ε
is the consolidation step in a comprehensive reimplementation of theL
A
TEX system. The next major release of L
A
TEX will be L
A
TEX3, which willinclude a radical overhaul of the document designers’ and package writers’ in-terface to L
A
TEX.L
A
TEX3 is a long-term research project but, until it is completed, the projectteam are committed to the active maintenance of L
A
TEX2
ε
. Thus the experi-ence gained from the production and maintenance of L
A
TEX2
ε
will be a majorinfluence on the design of L
A
TEX3. A brief description of the project can befound in the document
ltx3info.tex
.If you would like to support the project then you are welcome to send donationsto the L
A
TEX3 Project Fund; this has been set up to help the research team byfinancing various expenses associated with this voluntary work of maintainingthe current L
A
TEX and developing L
A
TEX3.The fund is administered by The TEX Users Group and by various local usergroups. Information about making donations and joining these groups is avail-able from:

The L
A
TEX3 project has its home page on the World Wide Web at:

This page describes L
A
TEX and the L
A
TEX3 project, and contains pointers to otherL
A
TEX resources, such as the user guides, the TEX Frequently Asked Questions, and the L
A
TEX bugs database.Older articles covering aspects of the L
A
TEX3 project are also available for anony-mous ftp from the Comprehensive TEX Archive, in the directory:
tex-archive/info/ltx3pub
The file
ltx3pub.bib
in that directory contains an abstract of each of the files.3
