All schools have nowbeen issued with acopy of a DVDhighlighting someexamples of the widevariety of ways ICT isused to support thework of educationalestablishments withinFalkirk CouncilEducation Services. This DVD celebratesand encourages themany successful usesto which ICT is put insupporting theteaching and learningprocess in educationalestablishments withinFalkirk Council. Thanks are accorded to the following schoolshighlighted on the DVD for their willingness to share inwhat they do for the benefit ofus all: Bo’ness Academy,Carronshore Primary School,Easter Carmuirs Primary Schooland Nursery Class, Head of MuirPrimary School, Kinneil PrimarySchool, Larbert High School, andSt Mungo’s RC High School. These educational establishments show in the DVD howICT is an integral part of teaching and learning wherepupils and staff use ICT extensively in the normalcourse of their work. It supports and enhances thelearning process to raise attainment and achievementand can also develop home/school liaison. Most of theapplications of ICT shown in the DVD can be appliedacross all sectors and many of the ideas use resourcesfreely available in all our schools. Margaret Vass - Welcometo the team...
Margaret Vass joins the ICT Curriculum Support team onsecondment from Carronshore Primary School. WhilstMargaret will be involved in the range of dutiesunderpinning the post, her particular interest is in thearea of online learning. This interest stems from herexperience of using online learning spaces with classesover the past 2 years. She has also made extensive useof a variety of newly emerging social software tools toaid learning and teaching.A number of the modulesundertaken during her recentlycompleted Chartered Teachercourse focussed on online learningenvironments, and her finaldissertation involved a detailedstudy of the impact of her own use
Comics across the Curriculum?
Another tool to help inspire literacy, through using comic creation softwareacross the curriculum, has been provided by Falkirk Council for all schools tosupport A Curriculum for Excellence. Comic Life software provides a means toempower pupils to create visual narratives, pictorial reports, how-to guides andmore in a visually engaging way. This has been found to particularly engagedisaffected pupils by providing an immediacy of dialogue by developing visualliteracy through the graphic novels style. It also supports pupils with a varietyof learning styles. The software licence purchased for Falkirk Council allowsfor the software to be installed across all educational establishments withinFalkirk Council. The licence also permits all staff to have comic life software licensed for useon their home computer if they so wish. All school ICT Co-ordinators havebeen provided with the download and serial number details so if you wish tohave this at home please ask your ICT Co-ordinator. Training in use of thesoftware will be provided on the November in-service and can also be providedas in-school CPD on request. In addition there are Comic Life video tutorials onthe staff pages of the Falkirk Virtual Teacher Centre at www.falkirkvtc.org.uk.

The findingsof the study illustrated that there was a positive impacton pupil motivation, and a significant change todelivery and content of the classroom curriculum.Margaret is welcomed to the team and she is lookingforward to sharing her knowledge of using blogs, wikisand other free social software tools through deliveringcourses in schools, at Camelon and online via the VTC.
VTC Update
Some significant changes have been made recently tothe Staff Area of the VTC.The main changes areoutlined below:The Staff Area can nowbe accessed directlyfrom the Pupil Area byclicking on theappropriate icon.New areas of the VTC are no longer passwordprotected. All previous entries to the VTC can still beaccessed by inserting the usual password whenpromptedOpportunities are available for staff to undertake on-line training in certain topics and it’s now possible tosubscribe to the VTC to receive new updates by email(see below)

Education Establishments will be changing from PhoenixGold to SEEMIS as the preferred ManagementInformation System (MIS) for Education Services. Alleducation establishments have received anImplementation document to inform them of thischange and further copies of this document can befound on the Falkirk VTC (see the Contents list on theStaff Home page for the link). The change to the new MIS has been scheduled forearly in the new year with the expectation of allestablishments making use of SEEMIS for the processingof core pupil and staff data from no later than March2009. Other SEEMIS modules will be introduced over aperiod of time beyond March 2009 with the exactdetails of this process still to be determined.
TVs in Classrooms
If a projectorand/or Interactiveboard is installedin a classroomthen a suitablealternative to awall-mounted ormobile television would beto use a USB TV tuner in theclassroom PC.USB TV Tuners still require an aerial connection tothem but have the added advantage of a far greatersize of display through the projector in the classroom. The projected image in schools ranges from 45”diagonal through to nearly 80” diagonal and so benefitsfrom a far greater viewing area for pupils to see. All ofthe Interactive Board installations also include speakerfittings and so produce a far greater and broader soundfield in the classroom than a normal TV.All Falkirk Council purchased desktop PCs have DVDplayback facilities in them, and the PC can also be usedto “snapshot” images and video footage coming throughthe TV Tuner to be used as part of an interactivelesson. Other AV equipment, such as Video Recorders orCamcorders, can also be attached to the projector orInteractive Whiteboard to allow for playback. In terms of cost, a USB TV Tuner with external aerialconnection such as:http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_novatstick.html retails at £25 for schools.

Newsletter - November 2008Issue 15Comparing this to the cost of the purchase andinstallation of a wall-mounted or trolley based TV(approx £400 per classroom) significant savings could bemade across a school, to the extent that this savingcould be put towards the purchase of interactive boardsfor the small percentage of classrooms without one. Itis the opinion of the ICT Curriculum Support team andmyself that this would be a far more useful resource fora school.Another factor to be kept in mind is that a number ofTVs currently installed may well be analogue TVs sothey will all need Digital Freeview boxes attached tothem when the digital switchover comes. The USB TVTuners mentioned above have both Analogue andDigital tuners in them, and so they are future proof.Further guidance on this matter can be obtained fromthe ICT Curriculum Support Team based at CamelonEducation Centre who should be consulted beforeproceeding with any ICT purchases or any AV purchasesthat may have an alternative ICT-related solution orimplication. And if you are in doubt over ICT-relatedalternative solutions, ask them anyway. It goes without saying that this should be doneirrespective of the funding source. And, as ever, purchases should be made through the ICT Help Desk.
New approach to Primary back up
On a weekly basis, the servers that are in primaryschools are backed up centrally to a storage deviceat Municipal Buildings. The central device whichstores backups for all 49 primary schools is strugglingto cope with the huge volume of aggregated datainvolved. Part of the difficulty is created by a largenumber of media files containing either video oraudio clips which can be very large.Following discussion between ICT Team 3 and ICTCurriculum Support staff, we have identified folderswhich could be pruned to reduce the size of thebackups.
In future, during summer holidays, all dataresiding in folders Primary1 to Primary7 and “AllUsers” (which are all accessed through the PupilShare button on the staff desktop) will beroutinely erased.
It will be the responsibility of school staff to move tothe Curriculum folder any data that they wish to saveprior to the end of term. On return after the summerbreak, the saved data could then be moved back ifrequired.Meantime, it would be a great help to all if youcould review your own folders and remove anyunnecessary or out of date data and periodicallyreview these areas to keep them as tidy as possible.
