The basic difference between a thermal fax machine and a thermal transfer fax machine is that in the former case, the heat is directly applied to the paper, whereas in the latter case, heat is applied to the ribbon causing the image to transfer to the plain paper.

The ribbon is usually a polyester film that contains the ink. This is generally coated with wax or a suitable resin that helps the ink transfer evenly and correctly to the paper without smudging. Some fax ribbons utilize a mixture of wax and resin to make it more economical for fax machine users. The print head knows exactly where to heat up the ribbon and the melted ink is transferred to the paper at the appropriate places.
