GIBI Course - Holy Feasts of Israel
Chapter 1
Understanding the Feasts
Leviticus 23:2“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: “The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.”
The first feast day that God established was the Sabbath day, which is to be observed everyweek. The Lord established the following seven feasts in Leviticus 23 that were to be celebratedannually:Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles.The Hebrew work for “Feast”, mo’ed, means “A set or appointed time.” Christians often falselyassume these feasts are exclusively for Jewish people, but the Bible makes it clear that these days belong to the Lord.The feast days have several purposes; they are intended to draw the minds and hearts of the people toward God:They are a time of CommunionThey are a time of JoyThey create a picture of God’s plan for the ages.Through these feasts, God is giving us a snapshot of what He has already done, as well as a prophetic portrait of what is to come.God does not want us to live in ignorance, defeat, or misery. He designed His festivals tostrengthen weary hearts, comfort lost souls, and bring truth to a dying world.The importance of the feasts of Jehovah in Israel’s religious life cannot be overestimated. Theseseven feasts, as outlined in Leviticus 23 were the backbone of the Levitical system. Most of them have a defined typical meaning in relation to Christology, which I will be pointing out inupcoming chapters. The festivals are blueprints through which God revealed His overall plan of redemption for both man and the earth.The festivals are divided into two major portions, depending upon whether they occur in thespring or the fall. The spring festivals teach us about the first coming of the Lord. The fallfestivals teach us about the second coming of the Lord.
“His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” Hosea 6:3
The former and latter rain in this scripture refers to the first and second coming of the Lord.God gave the natural for us to understand the spiritual. During the course of the year, the rainscome in Israel at two primary times;
the spring and the fall.
