INJURIES FATAL TO AGED PEDESTRIAN

J. Galerno Succumbs
Driver Claims Victim Stepped Into Path Of Car
Inquiry Into Cause Of Windsorite's Death
Is Set For Friday

Five hours after he was struck down by an auto yesterday afternoon, James Galerno, 79 years old, of 734
Chatham Street East was dead in Hotel Dieu. He passed away from the effects of a skull fracture, without
regaining consciousness.

INQUEST FRIDAY

Dr. B. J. Girard, coroner, and members of a party panel viewed the body and decided to hold an inquest
Friday night at 8:30 in the Windsor Police Building. Since coming to Windsor 15 years ago from a farm on
the Belle River Road, Mr. Galerno had been proprietor of a rooming house. Yesterday noon he left home
to purchase a new mattress and was returning when the fatal accident occurred.
The aged man was struck by an auto operated by George R. Ferris, 25, of Auld, Anderdon Township. Mr.
Ferris was driving east on Wyandotte at the time. He noticed Mr. Galerno standing on the pavement near
the interection of Aylmer Avenue about 4 feet from the curb.

SPLASHED BY TRUCK

A truck traveling in the same direction was proceeding ahead of the Ferris car. Mr. Ferris observed that
Mr. Galerno was splashed with water from the wheels of the truck and the next instant the man stepped
forward directly in the path of his car.
Mr. Ferris sounded a blast on his horn and at the same time swung the wheels sharply in an effort to avoid
Mr. Galerno. The wheels of his car skidded on the wet streetcar rails and the rear end swung around. Mr.
Galerno's head was struck by the right front door and he was flung heavily to the pavement. The driver of
the auto aided others in placing the injured man in an auto and went with him to the hospital where he gave
his account of the accident to Cons. Johnston. Mr. Galerno went under the care of Dr. L.G. McCabe but
from the outset it was realized he had little chance of recovery. He died shorty after 3:00.

BORN NEAR COMBER

Born on a farm near Comber Mr. Galerno spent most of his life as a farmer until moving with his family to
Windsor. He is survived by his widow nee Virginia Sovie, one son Herbert, and two daughters Mrs.
Deborah Edwards of 343 Lincoln Road, and Mrs. Mary Kearns of 712 Marion Avenue. There are three
brothers, William of Pasendena, California, Herbert of Detroit, and Dighton of Algonac Michigan, and one
sister Mrs. William Schram of Algonac Michigan.
Funeral services will be held from his home Wednesday afternoon to South Woodsley for internment.
