The purpose of recreation is to be recreated. Too often spectator entertainment or sports is considered recreation. However, the best form of recreation is many times a change in useful activity which can take many forms. Gardening, and other activities in God's nature, is one of the best ways to be re-created. The Christian will consider seriously the use of his leisure time.

remnant people are to be a peculiar people. He hasgiven us instructions regarding every facet of our lives.This includes instructions on how we will best be ben-efited by the use of our leisure time. Satan also has plans for ourleisure time. Thus it is essential that we be able to distinguish be-tween the two. Thus we need to know which forms of recreationreally live up to their name. Leisure time activities that build us upor re-create us are true recreation. Other free-time activities aremere amusements.“There is a distinction between recreation and amusement.Recreation, when true to its name, re-creation, tends to strengthenand build up. Calling us aside from our ordinary cares and occu-pations, it affords refreshment for mind and body, and thus en-ables us to return with new vigor to the earnest work of life.Amusement, on the other hand, is sought for the sake of plea-sure, and is often carried to excess; it absorbs the energiesthat are required for useful work, and thus proves a hindranceto life’s true success.”

362Christ’s counsels and “presence” will enable us to dis-tinguish between lawful and unlawful pleasures.“Let us never lose sight of the fact that Jesus is a wellspring of  joy. He does not delight in the misery of human beings, but lovesto see them happy. Christians have many sources of happiness attheir command, and they may tell with unerring accuracy whatpleasures are lawful and right. They may enjoy such recreationsas will not dissipate the mind or debase the soul, such as will notdisappoint, and leave a sad after influence to destroy self-respector bar the way to usefulness.
