Years ago, when I rst came tothe Marina to sail my Hobie 16,I remember being at the countylaunch ramp, seeing the menlaunching and pulling their boatson busy weekends. I alwaysthought it was funny but slightlysad that some would shamelesslyscream at their wives, girlfriendsor kids for not anticipating theminor tragedy that was unfoldingduring the process. They wouldyell at them like dogs for allwithin earshot to hear.Well, I’m back at the launchramp again having boughtanother trailerable boat and itwas me who was being publiclyhumiliated this time. I was tiedto the dock, foolishly attemptingto raise my mainsail stern tothe wind, thinking I could pullit off in the two-knot breeze. Itwas laziness; I didn’t feel liketurning the boat around. As thesail reached the halfway mark,I knew it would be impossibleto raise. But before I began todrop the sail a very loud manbegan screaming at me. He wasordering me to drop the sail.Like a father lambasting hischild, his shrill voice barked thecommands.I felt all the eyeballs in thevicinity scanning me and mysituation. I, a man in my forties, was being reprimanded andadmonished for raising my sailimproperly. I thought, “damn, that’s my luck - I have to screwup next to boating’s BobbyKnight. Johnny autocrat of thedocks was spewing self-madeauthority like the Great Santinihimself.I prefer a hand on the back anda gentle tone when learning orteaching a lesson. But everyoneknows shame, embarrassmentand humiliation is the way toreally tattoo your message tothe unsuspecting sod on thereceiving end.Boating can bring such joy,but also, at times, anger andfrustration. To the all-knowinghotheads in the audience I askyou – take a breath, be calmand clearly explain what youneed before you dress-down. Berespectful whenever you can. Weidiots are much more receptiveto the approach. Take it from me – it’s a win win!
