For Immediate Release: Contact: Chris HeinbaughDecember 22, 2009 214-670-0773
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert announced today that six more vacant buildings will be added to the City’s vacant building clean-up initiative. That program uses codecompliance to rid the downtown corridor of the health and safety hazards foundin deteriorating vacant structures. In addition to the unsightly blight, health andsafety concerns, these unkempt properties can hinder development in the CentralBusiness District.“We are going to aggressively pursue building owners who allow these structuresto rot and pose a threat to their neighbors,” said Mayor Leppert. “Clearly, the firstphase of the initiative has worked very well and we are not letting up.”In Phase One – which began in Fall of 2008 - the city identified seven vacantstructures with significant code and fire safety violations. The owners faced heavy fines if they did not bring address the violations. Through the efforts of the City  Attorney’s office, five of the structures have been brought into compliance without litigation. In two cases, the structures were sold to another party who completed the repairsand is now considering developing both buildings. In the case of the formerStatler Hilton, the repairs are not only underway, but the renewed conversationsproved so constructive they resulted in a project to brighten up the front of thestructure to make it more appealing for the opening of Main Street Garden acrossthe street. Before-and-after photos for some of those structures are in theattached Power Point presentation. The properties identified in phase II are:
