Return to the childhood of MatildaFrelinghuysen by attending the elegantSeventh Annual Tea for the young and young-at-hearts at The Frelinghuysen Arboretumon Saturday, February 6 at 1:30 p.m. Noted Victorian costume designer and historian,Barbara Meyer Darlin entertains andenlightens as she demonstrates the layers of clothing a person wore one hundred yearsago, right down to the unmentionables. Shebrings her dress-up box filled to the brim withhats, scarves, and capes for the young girls inthe audience to try on.Millinery, or hat making, is featured too,because in 1899, when Matilda was 9 yearsold, well dressed women and girls did notleave the house without a hat on their head. These hats were often festooned with manyfeathers and sometimes entire birds. Learnhow this use of feathers led to the passageof one of America’s first environmental lawsand the beginning of the environmentalmovement.Everyone can enjoy a delightful teacomplete with tea sandwiches and dainties.Following the refreshments, children fashion agarden party hat of their own to take home.The cost is $30 per person and isrecommended for ages 6 and up.
