Nick Zegel is a young artist pursuing all things creative.After completing his BFA in design at Boston University,Nick moved to Philadelphia to pursue entrepreneurialprojects and work as freelance designer and artist. Nick was the creative director and skateboard team managerfor Jetty, a small surf brand, and has produced musicvideos, photography and album artwork for up-and-coming bands.Nick has strong ties to contemporary surf and skateboardculture and plans to release a self-published book, form acreative collective of talented friends, and continue todesign, paint, and create short lms.

While art directing an upcoming surng lm in SouthAmerica and the Caribbean, I became attracted to thevibrant colors and the hand-painted, weathered signsthere. The B-roll footage often pictured the crew munch-ing on delicious food from beach front stands. I wantedto isolate them and attempt to visually re-create some of the unique characteristics each stand possessed.

was commissioned by Adobe and created usingAdobe® Illustrator® CS4 software.
I begin the illustration by using the Shapetools to build a rough layout of the foodstand. I use the Direct Selection tool tomanually adjust anchor points so mylayout doesn’t look too geometric.
I create a new Patternbrush, and on a newlayer I use it to createthe wavy edge of thetin roof.It’s helpful to selectView > Show Grid andView > Snap to Gridwhen creating patternbrushes.I use the Pen tool to create acustom, thin brush, and using thePaintbrush tool I add aging detail tothe wood panels.
