Notes
Child Levina dosenot appear on the 1860 Census of Noble Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. and Phebie C. as 9mos. old making the census taken in June of
1860. However, Levina is listed on the 1870 census as 18yrs. 1880 she is 28 yrs. and still at home with her mother.<HDB>
The files show George born and married both in 1836. this cannot be correct. The only thing that might make sence is if his mother was Elizabeth
Saliday and he was a twin to Eliza Ann b. 3 oct 1816. This would make him 20 when he married in 1836. <HDB>
Some say he married Catharine Mitzell on June 11, 1836 but the age dosen't fit. He moved to Kentucky and made his home there until his death.

Recorded Dec. 22, 183_
1860 Federal Census Sangamon County Illinois; Springfield, Illinois July 28, 1860 District Number 16
Some records indicate that Thomas Westbrook Jr. was first married to Minerva Fields. A record of marriage in April 1837 may be found in Sangamon
County. The 1840 census record lists only one Thomas Westbrook household. This is probably Thomas Jr. No adult female is part of this household
so it may be that Minerva died before 1840.
It is believed that at least one child was born to Thomas and Minerva. This child was Barnet Westbrook. In the 1850 census, both Thomas and Barnet
are listed in the household of J. Rape. Barnet is listed as 10 years of age. In the 1860 census, Barnet, age 22, is listed in the household of Newton
Field. Thomas Westbrook in 1852 married Sarah Farmer. It seems that when Thomas remarried, his son went to live with his mother's relatives.
On Sept. 18, 1862, Barnet joined the 114th Infantry from Illinois which was part of the Union forces in the Civil War. On 15 March 1863, Barnet died in
Memphis, Tenn. He was a victim of smallpox.
In 1843 a receipt was given to Thomas Westbrooks for $4.50 as administrator of the estate of Barnet L. Fields by William Poor. (Part of a letter of Jack
Westbrook sent by Gerald Caulk)
1 male 60-70
2 males 20-30
1 female 60-70
The male and female would be born between 1760-1770 which fits the timeline of Thomas Sr. being born 1767.For your information. You may have it
in your files but I was not sure.
Mary Ann Westbrook along with Thomas R. Cary and some of there children are
buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Sumner CO.,Ks.

According to Harvey Ernest Westbrook Sara Jane was a twin and was Indian Descent.
From Harvey Ernest Westbrook (I think some of this has been disproved by other genealogists):
SARA JANE WESTBROOK
KNOWN AS LAUGHING WATER BY HER TRIBE
(If she was a twin, then her twin must have died because I don't see a sibling her age in the 1850 census.)
Sara Jane Westbrook, my great grandmother was a twin and was born in Kentucky, August 25th, 1830. She married Thomas in Sangamon County,
Ancestors of: Page 40 of 173
Esther Vernon Fogle
Illinois October 18, 1852.
Thomas and Sara Jane had five children, two boys and three girls.
After Thomas died Sara Jane married a man named Bailey. They had one child, Ida Margaret, born April 28th, 1872. Ida Margaret died at birth and
was buried at the cemetery on the homestead where they lived.
Sara Jane died and was also buried in the cemetery on the homestead (date unknown). Why my great uncle Brade buried Thomas Westbrook, his
father, my great grandfather, at the old Brunk Cemetery and buried Sara Jane, Thomas' wife, at the homestead cemetery is a mystery to me. As a boy,
I saw the family cemetery and graves. Uncle Brade pointed out my great grandmother's grave. Today, it is a cornfield and markers are gone.
MORTUARY
SARAH F. FOGLE
FOGLE-Died, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 21, 1903, at the family residence in New City, Mrs. Sarah F. Fogle aged 72 years, 9 months and 21 days.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the residence. Interment will be made in Brunk cemetery, east of the city.
The decedent is survived by one son, J. B. Westbrook of New City; three daughters, Mary A. Fogle of New City, Nancy F. Fogle of Macoupin County
and Mrs. Tillie Anderson of Springfield.
This information appeared in the newspaper, THE JOURNAL, published in Springfield, Ilinois. The date of the information was Monday 22 June 1903.
Note: Mary Ann Westbrook's married name should be Cary. Nancy Jane Westbrook's married name is Fogle but her middle initial should be J. not F.
Note: Sarah's middle initial F. given in this article probably stands for her maiden name which was Farmer.
On Sara's marriage certificate to Thomas, it says her name is Sarah Farmer to Thomas Westbrook. If she had been married before, would her name
still have been Farmer?
There is something not right with the parents of Sara. According to the 1850 census of Sangamon County, she is living in the home of John C. Farmer
and his wife Matilda. She is Sarah Farmer, age 18. John C. Farmer died December 11, 1850 and is buried in Brunk Cemetery.
Harvey Westbrook says her great great grandmother was Jane Waters that married Green Farmer. THIS CANNOT BE RIGHT! Unless there were two
Jane Waters and Green Farmers because Jane and Green were married in 1826 in Blount County Tennessee. It is more likely to me that Green and
John were brothers or cousins. This particular Green and Jane could not have been Sara's great great grandparents.

Her marriage record says that her marriage to John Fogle is her 5th marriage! It also says that her parents are John C. Farmer and Sallie Hubbard.
There are probably some papers somewhere that tell what happened to the pay he was due while in the Civil War. It says that he had pay of $75.00
due to him. Anyway that is the way I read the report. He surely doesn' owe the U.S.
Newton W. Field was married to Emily Wilson on 4/29/1849 in Sangamon County and to Lydia Griffin on 5/20/1843 in Brown County.

Hi Karen, I just reviewed the data in your family tree and found we have a common family tie. Thomas Robert Cary and my Great Grandfather, Henry
Cary were brothers. Their father was James Collins Cary from DE. Most of the Cary family of that time period stayed in Sangamon Co., IL. During the
past year, I have begun constructing my family tree, which I have not listed on Ancestry. If you would like some of the family data that I have put
together, please let me know. I am using Family Tree Maker to collect my history. Mary Ann was Thomas' second wife. Thanks for your family data.

Harvey Ernest supplied lots of information on the Westbrook family. All through his notes are interesting facts on the Cherokee Indian Nation. He was
really convinced that his Westbrook Ancestors were Indians. This the title page from his notes:
THE WESTBROOK FAMILY TREE AS RECORDED BY HARVEY ERNEST WESTBROOK SEPTEMBER 26, 1976 (Most of his notes say 1982)
This is a record of the Westbrook Family, It is based on stories told to me by my father, Harvey Newton Westbrook, my great uncle Joseph Brade
Westbrook, also the oldest living relatives I have, Myrtle M. Fogle, daughter of Nancy Jane Westbrook Fogle, and my father's first cousin, Vernan
Westbrook Weaver. It is based on years of research, discussions and bits of information gathered by my cousins, aunts and uncles.
Some may disagree with what I have learned and recorded. I am satisfied it is true. Those who disagree may throw away any or all of this.
THOMAS WESTBROOK
Thomas Westbrook, my great grandfather, was a Cherokee Indian, born in Tennessee on June 27th, 1806. (Specific town or area unknown.)
He left Tennessee in 1838, about the time the Federal Government drove the Cherokee Nation into Oklahoma.
He had a Cherokee wife and children. Their names, where they lived in Oklahoma, and what happened to them is unknown at this time. More research
is underway.
October 18, 1852, Thomas Westbrook went to New City, Illinois with his second Cherokee wife, Sara Jane Farmer. He was 46 years of age at the time
and she was 22. (I WAS TOLD BY ANOTHER DESCENDANT THAT SHE HAD FLAMING RED HAIR) K.J.
They lived on a homestead near the South Fork of the Sangamon River, They had five children.
Thomas fought in the Civil and was a member of Post #421 Grand Army of the Republic. (See picture of Grand Army of the Republic Star found on his
grave, which I now possess).
He died June 26th, 1866 and is buried at the old Brunk Cemetery near Springfield, Illinois.
Her Great, Great, Great Grandparents were Enoch Waters and Mary Bird, both Cherokee Indians born in Cherokee Country which is now Kentucky,
Tennessee, North and South Carolina.
They were the parents of Sara's Great, Great Grandmother, Jane Waters. Jane Waters marrried Green Farmer. Green Farmer's parents were Nathan
Farmer and Mary Garner, both were born in Cherokee Country. No records have been found concerning them.
Green Farmer was born on July 10th, 1805 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He married Jane Waters on February 2nd, 1826 in Blount County,
Tennessee. He died February 11th, 1882 in Ashley County, Illinois.
Jane Waters was born February 15th, 1810 in Kentucky and died February 17th, 1899 in Ashley County, Illinois.
Ancestors of: Page 82 of 173
Esther Vernon Fogle
Green and Jane had eight children. One of whom, named, Sara Jane Caroline Farmer was my great grandmother. She was also known by her
Cherokee name, "Laughing Water."
Sarah Jane Caroline Farmer first married a man named Mark Castleberry on December 28th, 1848. What happened to him later is unknown.
She later married my great grandfather, Thomas Westbrook in 1852. These records can be found on pages one and two of the folder.
O.K.--NOW FOR WHAT I THINK. I BELIEVE THAT IF I SEARCHED THE CENSUS AND MARRIAGE RECORDS THAT I WOULD FIND THAT
GREEN FARMER HAD A DAUGHTER SARA THAT MARRIED MARK CASTLEBERRY ON DECEMBER 28TH, 1848. MR. WESTBROOK HAS
CONFUSED THESE TWO SARAS. JOHN C. FARMER HAD A DAUGHTER NAMED SARA THAT MARRIED THOMAS WESTBROOK AS HER
FIRST MARRIAGE. ALSO, MY GUESS IS THAT ONE SARA IS NAMED SARA JANE AND THE OTHER IS NAMED SARA CAROLINE AND THERE
IS NO SARA JANE CAROLINE FARMER!!!
I HAVE PUT GREEN FARMER IN THIS FILE, BUT HAVE NOT ATTACHED HIM TO SARA JANE FARMER. IF I AM WRONG HE CAN BE
ATTACHED LATER.

1. SARA JANE CAROLINE2 FARMER (JOHN C.1) was born 25 Aug 1830 in Louisville, Kentucky, and died 21 Jun 1903 in New City, Sangamon
Ancestors of: Page 133 of 173
Esther Vernon Fogle
County, Illinois. She married (1) MARK CASTLEBERRY 28 Dec 1848. She married (2) THOMAS JR. WESTBROOK 10 Oct 1852 in Sangamon
County, Illinois, son of THOMAS WESTBROOK. He was born 27 Jun 1806 in Tenn., and died 26 Jun 1866 in Sangamon County Illinois. She married
(3) WILLIAM HILLER 07 Jun 1869 in Sangamon County, Illinois. He was born Abt. 1830 in Canada. She married (4) JAMES S. BAILEY 01 Apr 1872
in Sangamon County, Illinois. She married (5) JOHN FOGLE 21 May 1878 in Sangamon County, Illinois, son of PETER FOGLE and PHEBE
STEVENS. He was born 1825 in Ohio, and died Bet. 1880 - 1900.
She married Thomas in Sangamon County,
Illinois October 18, 1852.
This particular Green and Jane could not have been Sara's great great grandparents.

have her unto let my hand and seal the day and date above.
Marianne
Her marriage record says that her marriage to John Fogle is her 5th marriage! It also says that her parents are John C. Farmer and Sallie Hubbard.

MRS. TOLER
DIES AT 89
Mrs. Matilda Toler, 89, died about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at her home, 110 W. First St. She was the widow of John Toler, who died eight years ago.
Mrs. Toler would have been 90 years old on Sept. 6. She was born in Christian County, Ill. , the daughter of John and Mary Westbrook. She came to
Danville in 1876 and had resided in the South Danville vicinity since.
For the past 2 1/2 years, Mr. and Mrs. William Copas had made their home with Mrs. Toler and cared for her in her advancing age.

age of 49yrs 3 months and 2 days. Marriage to Thomas Robert Cary 11 Nov. 1876
and they had 10 children. She is buried in Rose Hill cemetery in South Haven,
KS. along with her husband and some of the children. We went there in April
and have the obit and pictures of the tombstones.
We also found some Westbrooks in the area and do not know if they belong to
this group.
Bradon Westbrook visited there and told them that Mary Ann was an Indian
princess. Have you check any other tribes than the Cherokee?

Hi Karen, I just reviewed the data in your family tree and found we have a common family tie. Thomas Robert Cary and my Great Grandfather, Henry
Cary were brothers. Their father was James Collins Cary from DE. Most of the Cary family of that time period stayed in Sangamon Co., IL. During the
past year, I have begun constructing my family tree, which I have not listed on Ancestry. If you would like some of the family data that I have put
together, please let me know. I am using Family Tree Maker to collect my history. Mary Ann was Thomas' second wife. Thanks for your family data.

1. THOMAS1 WESTBROOK was born 09 Sep 1767, and died 07 Jan 1836 in Sangamon County Illinois.
Westbrooks, Thomas, 1 male under 10; 2 males 10 to 16; 3 males 16 to 26; 1 male 26 to 45; 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45.
This leaves Samuel, William B., and Wesley not in the chart. Wesley is listed separately. William B. I don't believe to be a son of Thomas. Samuel
was married in 1814 and there is no woman of the right age to be his wife if he were living at home. James is not in the chart either, but he is probably
also not a son of Thomas.

I don't know where the Chief came from in Thomas Ridley Westbrook's name. I
think it came from that friend of Gerald Caulk's. Gerald never proved Indian
blood in the Westbrook line, although there is that legend in every family he
talked to. I think he was DeBarriman's father because of the circumstantial
evidence. No proof.
*****************************************************************************************************************
EXCERPT FROM A LETTER FROM GERALD MASON:
4. In Ida Westbrook Hall's family Bible, she has the death date for Thomas
Ridley Westbrook as 1836. I think I have found him on the 1840 census, so he
couldn't have died in 1836.
1830 Census
Sangamon Co. l. 25
Thomas Westbrook
2 M 20-30 = Thomas Jr. and Deberryman
1 M 60-70
1 F 60-70
On this census he is living in close proximity to Samuel, Wesley and "Rialy"
1840 Census
Sangamon Co. l. 5
p. 4
Thomas Westbrook
1 M 30-40
1 M 70-80
On this census he is living in close proximity to Littleton, Turner,
"Ebingham", and Ridley. I presume his wife died between the taking of the
1830 and 1840 censuses. Chief Thomas Ridley Westbrook was shown as over 45
years of age when the Davidson Co., Tenn. census was taken in 1820. In 1800
he would have been in N.C. , according to the birthplaces of his children. If
Ida Westbrook Hall's Bible is correct, Chief Thomas would have been born in
1767.
My notes on above:
Yun is not the name of Thomas' wife. Susan Dunn/Yun (various spellings) was the wife of Wesley Westbrook, supposed son of Thomas Sr. The
Samuel Westbrook and Hannah Turner mentioned have been said by other researchers to be the parents of Samuel and Turner Westbrook of Tenn. &
Ill. This couple did have two sons named Simon Turner Westbrook and Samuel Westbrook, but they were older than the supposed sons of Samuel,
they also died young. And they weren't in the right place and time to be our Samuel and Turner. Also, there are estate papers with dates that proves
they weren't the same people.
I couldn't begin to say the relationship between Thomas Sr. Westbrook and Samuel Westbrook Jr. There are too many Thomas Westbrooks and we
don't know the names of every descendant of James Westbrook of Virginia. The actual facts are real sketchy.
I agree with Gerald that Thomas Westbrook did not die in 1836. It would have been between 1840-1850 according to census records, but Thomas' wife
disappeared between 1830-1840.
*****************************************************************************************
I believe that we are looking at some of the sons of Thomas Westbrook Sr. Same place in time, same area.

Karen, Sorry for taking so long to reply. I've been playing out in the flower garden for the past few weeks, and haven't been checking my e-mail like I
should have been. I recognize most of the names you mentioned. I can't remember where I got the name Thomas Ridley Westbrook from, so I'll have
to go back through all my records. I think I got that middle name from my uncle. He did extensive genealogy research for about 30 years. In fact, he's
the one who managed to "infect" me with the genealogy bug. He died a few years ago. How I wish I could get my hands on his research! He send me
tons of information, but all of his orginal copies and notes are in California.
I also get a headache from trying to sort out the Westbrooks. I do remember that several of Thomas Ridley's sons were in the Civil War, and at least
one of them died. While the records said that the sons had fair skin and light-colored eyes, one of the sons had black hair, dark eyes, and a dark
complexion. I just can't remember which one. Perhaps, that son was Minerva Field's son, and the rest were from the second wife's side of the family.
The Indian princess tradition has been past down by too many people who have had no contact with other branches, to NOT have some truth to it. But,
as you said, I want proof!
Actually, I may have some proof (not written proof, unfortunately, but proof of a different sort). I have a pair of very, very old Indian moccasins that have
been past down on my mother's side. My mom was raised by her grandmother, whose maiden name was Nancy Jane Westbrook. According to my
mom, Nancy Jane often told a story in which she (Nancy Jane) claimed that her grandmother was a full-blooded Indian. I might add that Nancy Jane
had dark complexion, black eyes, jet-black hair (even when she was in her late seventies!), and in photos, she definitely looks like she is Indian. Nancy
Jane was a very religious person. She considered lying as a grave sin, so she obviously believed that she was part Indian. Otherwise, she would never
have told her children and grandchildren about her grandmother. Nor, would she be so proud of her Indian heritage. Still, this isn't "proof".
My uncle had a picture of Nancy Jane's mother (Sarah Jane Farmer). By all accounts Sarah Jane had brillant red hair that "shone like a copper penny".
She also had blue eyes. He tried for years to track down the Indian princess story, but never found any real proof. He was convinced there had to be
some truth to the story, because as I mentioned, too many people from each of the scattered branches all told the same story (almost word for word!)
My research difers from yours in one important area. As best as I can remember, I don't show Thomas Jr.'s first wife as being Minerva Fields. I show
that Minerva was the wife of Thomas Ridley's (Thomas, senior), and the mother of Thomas (the junior). Since Thomas Jr didn't married Sarah Jane
Farmer until he was forty-six, he could have easily been married before her. I have Sarah Jane's parents as John C. Farmer and Sarah "Sally" Hubbard.
Does that match your research? Do you have anything more on them?
I'll have to check my papers to refresh my memory, and make sure that I have my facts straight. Sorry, I've rambled on so long. I got excited when I
realized we shared the same roots. I've printed your e-mail. Tomorrow (uh, make that later today!) I'll start "rooting" around in my research, and see
what I can find on the names you mentioned.
As for the tin-types...They stopped using them before the Civil War. I do have one tin-type that shows a Westbrook in a military uniform. I haven't found
anybody that can date the photo or tell me what uniform he's wearing. Several people have suggested that it's a Civil War era picture, but I haven't
found the right expert yet.
I just hooked up my new scanner. As soon as I figure out how to use it correctly, I'll see if I can scan the tin-types. If I can, I'll send you some of them.
Wouldn't it be great if you could recognize some of them?
Thanks for answering my inquiry. Bye for now. Your cousin, Karen Ballard
My notes: Minerva Fields was definitely the wife of Thomas Jr., not Sr. Just check the census records. Their son died in the civil war and was
apparently the only child of this union.

Cirly/Rialy(should be Ridley): 1 male under 5; 1 male 20-30; 1 female 20-30. On this Riley, I have two different censuses copied. On one his age is
20-30 and on the other his age is 30-40. But on the 1840 census his age is still 30-40, so who knows. Sometimes I copy numbers wrong. I wonder
what is right.
******************************************************************************************************************
In 1834 Ridley R. Westbrook made a statement on the estate papers of Henry West. So who is this other Westbrook? It has to be Ridley. I have him
in the 1840 census, Ridly R. in the 1850 in Macon County Missouri, and then Riley in the 1860.
William Westbrook is in Green County in 1830, so I didn't include him on the census.
Turner Westbrook married Temperence Dunn 1822 in Davidson County Tennessee. There are those that insist he and Samuel are the sons of an older
Samuel Westbrook. But the older ones are so mixed up and dates wrong unless someone has straightened it out by now, that I don't think that is
correct. Wesley Westbrook married Sarah (Susan) Dunn (Junn-Jun) 1818 in Davidson County Tennessee. I think these two are brothers, possibly
marrying sisters, and I think they are probably both sons of Thomas Westbrook. Probably most of the ones in Sangamon/Montgomery County are
including Deberryman. I can't find it now, but I know I had read of a will that stated the death of the older Samuel Westbrook that they are trying to
attach these two to, and it was about 10 years too early. I just found out. Samuel Westbrook that married Hannah Turner had his will probated 1782 in
Southampton County Virginia. Turner and Samuel were both according to the 1830 census 30 to 40 years old. The earliest they could have been born
was 1790! Most people that claim this relationship leave out some of the important dates to make it fit.
*****************************************************************************************************************
Now, how about this. Maybe Matilda's father was Caleb Cardwell. 1840 Illinois Census
Caleb Cardwell:
2 males under 5-10 ; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 2 females under 5; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 40-50
*****************************************************************************************************************
Ridley Westbrook:
2 males 5-10; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 30-40; 2 females 5-10; 1 female 20-30
Something doesn't seem right about these ages. He married in 1825. If Susannah's age is right, the oldest she could be is 30 making her born in 1810.
Married at 15 or younger. Somewhere I got their ages, him born in 1795 and her born in 1805. Wish I knew where. That would make the census ages
wrong unless there are two Ridleys. That doesn't make sense either, because I am not finding two separate ones on the census records, unless they
were living with her in laws.
In 1832 Thomas Willin and wife, Polly, granted a plot of land to trustees of Horse Creek Methodist Church. No one living now saw this church. It is one
of those "They say so." Nothing more is known of that church. This plot of land is located on the south end of the old Eldrege 80 and the abstract says
the trustees were Thomas Westbrook, Henry West and Reuben Short. HISTORY OF NEW CITY CHURCH COPIED FROM
SCRAPBOOK OF MRS. NONIE HUDGINS.
*****************************************************************************************************************
(Group II) The following year, 1818, a James Westbrook received a Land Warrant
for 160 acres in Peoria, Illinois. Mrs. Willcox claims descendancy from this
James Westbrook, and he is not supposed to be related to Thomas Ridley
Westbrook; however, since he married a McGowen and the McGowens seem to be
related to Thomas Ridley Westbrook in some way, I think that this James
Westbrook is probably one of our clan, too.
(Group III) Other than these two Westbrook records, I can't find another
record in Illinois until 26 Nov. 1829 when Thomas Westbrook paid $1.25 an acre
for 80 acres in Sangamon County. This is undoubtedly our "Chief" Thomas
Ridley Westbrook.
Once Samuel B. McGowen got to Montgomery Co., Illinois, he stayed there until
his death. There is a Letters of Administration for him dated 9 November 1869
whereby Ishmael McGown was appointed administrator of his estate. There is
another Letters of Administration for Samuel B. McGown of Montgomery County,
Ill. who died the 31 Jan 1897. In this document Abel A. McGown was appointed
executor; however, before he was able to administer the will, he also died.
In his place a William Gragg was then appointed to administer the will. This
second Samuel B. McGown must have been a junior to the previously mentioned
Samuel B. McGown.
According to the 1860 Mortality Census in Montgomery Co., Ill, Samuel McGowin,
76, b. Kentucky, died in March of Lung Fever. (p. 3). On p. 6 Sarah
Westbrook, 3, b. Ill. died in Dec. of Typhoid Fever; Samuel T. McGowen, 12 b.
Ill., died in March of Lung Fever; and Amanda A. McGowen , 2, b. Ill., died in
March of Lung Fever.
Oh yes, Samuel B. McGown m. Deacy Nail 4 June 1839; Alexander McGown m. Louisa
McNail Oct. 14, 1829.
I have heard that "Chief" Thomas Ridley Westbrook was born in Northampton
County, N.C., and I have heard that he might have been born just across the
state line in Southampton County, Virginia. On the 1900 Census taken in
Dallas County, Dallas, Texas, Thomas T. Westbrook, my ancestor and grandson of
the "Chief" said that Virginia was the birth place of his father William B.
Westbrook (Thomas Ridley's eldest son.) If this is true, then Thomas Ridley
Westbrook must also have been born in Virginia, married there, and started his
family there.
As I said earlier, I have found no evidence that any of the Westbrooks married
Indians, and I have no idea how the "Chief" got attached to Thomas Ridley
Westbrook's name. However, since the Indians assumed English names, they are
very difficult tidentify. It seems strange that if he was not married to an
Indian that this Indian-wife tradition is found in almost all families
descended from Thomas Ridley Westbrook, including mine. My mother and her
siblings are dark complected, have strong noses and very prominent cheek
bones, but they have bright blue eyes. My grandfather William Mac Westbrook
had wavy black hair that turned prematurely gray and blue eyes. I never met
my ggrandfather John Perry Westbrook, but I have seen a picture of him and he
appears to have had blue eyes, too. He didn't look at all Indian to me. He
was fat, had a broad face, and a wide nose. So I don't know about the Indian
business. My grandfather once said he was a "Black German" whatever that
is??? Personally, I feel that our line is English - opposed to the Dutch
line.
Another mystery is how many children the "Chief" and his wife had. Some
researchers say they had thirteen children (twelve sons and one daughter). I
don't know where this tradition originated because according to the 1820
census taken in Davidson County, Tennessee, if Wesley is one of Thomas Ridley
Westbrook's sons, and I think he is, unless Thomas had four sons living
elsewhere, I can only account for eight sons and one daughter. I think his six
Ancestors of: Page 158 of 173
Esther Vernon Fogle
identified sons are Thomas, William B. (my ancestor), Littleton, Deberryman
(your ancestor), Wesley, and Ridley. I don't think that Samuel or Turner were
his sons because they were named in their father's will dated 1781 in
Southampton County, Virginia. I wonder if Thomas Ridley's daughter was the
Hannah Westbrook who married luke Patterson 22 Oct. 1807 in Williamson County,
Tennessee or could she have been the Nancy Westbrook who married Sam McGowen
on 3 Sept 1804 in Warren Co., Ky. That would explain the tie-in between the
"Chief" and the McGowens.
A tax list taken in Davidson County in 1811 shows that two Thomas Westbrooks
were living there at that time. One Thomas Westbrook, enumerated on p. 46,
paid on 3 taxables, and the other Thomas Westbrooks paid on 9 taxables. These
Thomases were probably father and son because there is a deed from Thomas Sr.
to Thomas Jr. in Sangamon County, Illinois some years later. While living in
Davidson County, Tenn. one Thomas Westbrook was enumerated in Captain Hale's
Militia Company in 1812, and during the same period, the other Thomas
jWestbrook was listed in Captain Henry's Militia Company. In the Tennessee
Land Grant File, there is a record for one Thomas Westbrook for 166 acres on 3
Feb. 1816, but it is inclear whether this was Thomas Sr. or Thomas Jr.
Please let me hear from you soon. I am so glad we got in touch, and we have
Flora to thank for that.

Thomas Westbrook bought land in 1829, the same township as Wesley, Samuel, and Thomas Jr. bought land in.Other researchers keep saying his
name was Chief Thomas Ridley Westbrook. I have a little bit of trouble sorting out all the Ridleys. I believe there is a separate Ridley possibly a son of
Thomas. There is always this unsubstaniated story of Thomas Westbrook being Cherokee Indian. Others say his wife was Indian. I believe if there is
a Chief in front of his name it stood for something else. There are different tales of Indian ancestry from Westbrooks scattered all over but it may have
been because some late 1800's Westbrooks went to Oklahoma and married Indian women. One of Debarriman's sons was named Ridley. Thomas is
said to be the father of Debarriman in an affidavit signed by an 80 year old man in 1930. The time and place would be right for him to be the father of
Debarriman.
I don't believe that he is the father of William B. or James, although other researchers disagree.

Must have lost a male child that isn't with them in 1860.
In Schuyler County in 1875 there is a Jane Westbrook married Pleasant Woodson. Is it possible that she is the Jane in 1860. I couldn't read the
census other than Jane, so I wonder. Seems to me I remember corresponding with someone or seeing something about her. Need to check Davis

I have a problem with this deposition. First off, I don't know who this man is. Second he would have been born around 1850. Deberryman Westbrook
was in Davis County Iowa by 1856. I don't know if he ever went back to Illinois after that. He died in 1864. I don't know where he is buried. Possibly in
Davis County, Schuyler County, or even his body shipped back to Illinois although there is no record of any expenses of this nature. Some of his sons
evidently have gone back to Illinois by as early as 1861. Anyway, in 1856 when Deberryman was in Davis County this James Westbrook would have
been six years old. How did he know Deberryman to be personally acquainted with him? Also, the said Thomas Westbrook, alleged father of
Deberryman is said according to a family Bible to have died in 1846 (long before this James Westbrook was born). How could he have known
Deberryman Westbrook to be a son of Thomas other than by heresay? I would take it that Matilda was deceased before Deberryman died as there is
no mention of her in his will.

From Probate Records: Sangamon County, Illinois (1827-1835) Probate record of John Pike - Berry Westbrooks is mentioned. Don't know if creditor,
debtor, or inheritance. John Pike and John Pike Jr. bought land in Rochester Township, in 1830 and 1831. The introduction to this probate book says
that to retain the privacy of the records examined, the compilers have abstractedonly the data deemed worth mentioning. Searchers may wish to
persue a particular file further since they chose to exclude estate valuations and names of creditors in each file whenever possible. In instances where
the compilers were unable to establish specific family ties to those with identical surnames, they used "rel. not est." This means no certain proof exists
on any file document linking these positively as proven members of a given family unit. The early Westbrooks Samuel, Thomas, Thomas Jr., and
Westley bought land from 1829 to 1835 in Cottonhill Township. It is east of Cooper Township and borders Rochester Township. Note this is where
John Pike bought land.
Affidavit of Decease - Cary Wilkinson swore that John Pike died 13 December 1833. Will dated 9 December 1833 names wife, Polly, sole heir;
witnessed by Cary Wilkinson, Squire Baker, Barret L. Field. Bond signed by Polly Pike, James P. Kipper and Squire Baker. Names in file: John and
Joseph Williams, John Rape, A. Sattley, Berry Westbrooks, and John Stokes.
Notes: Joshua Westbrook (son of Deberryman) married widow Wilkinson. Barnett Fields father of Minerva who married Thomas Westbrook? Son was
Barnett Westbrook that died in Civil War.) Thomas is probable brother to Deberryman.

Hi! I got your message from my daughter Jennifer (jenjen@siu.edu). She had
posted the query to help me out. I don't have any information on
DeBarriman Westbrook. I just got started on the Westbrook side of the
family and all I have is his name and that he was my 5th great grandfather.
If you have any information that could help me I would appreciate it. I
also have the name of a lady who publishes a Westbrook bulletin for free
on the internet I have received some info from her but I haven't been able
to tie it in either. Her e mail is FBecket@aol.com . You can send her
your questions and she may be able to help. It seems to take her a few
weeks to get back but I imagine she is a very busy lady. Another one that
was helpful to me was RoseTexas@msn.com she is a Westbrook too. I hope
this is helpful to you. You can e me anytime at owen74@midwest.net.

I was delighted to get your letter of inquiry yesterday and am so glad to meet you. I will send you what I have on the Meeds family (which really isn't too
much) by snail mail. Meanwhile, I will introduce myself. Your ansestor Edy Meads was my Half 3rd great-grandaunt. I am a direct decendent of her
half-brother Solomon Dennis Meeds. There are different spellings of these peoples names that is Meeds, Meads etc. But I believe they are the same
folks.
All of the information that I have is secondary information. My grandmother's brother, William Jesse Durbin did family research for about 60 years and
all of the information that I have came from his research. When I was just a young thing, after I gave birth to my first born, I asked my Grandma (Nora
Belle Durbin) what she knew about the family history because I just wanted to fill out the family tree chart in my baby's book. She shruged me off and
told me to write to her brother with the statement, "Oh, Jeppy is the one that does all that stuff". Jeppy was his "pet"name. So, I wrote to Uncle Jeppy,
and lo and behold, he must have been just waiting for someone to show an interest in "that stuff" because he sent me two notebooks with his original
research in them. I was flabbergasted, since I didn't quite understand it all, and all that I wanted to do was to fill out Patty's baby chart! But I knew it
Ancestors of: Page 164 of 173

was an important legacy, and I kept the notebooks in our family safe for years.
Then, several years later, one of my aunts, Cecilia( Murphy)Brookreson decided to do some research, and she took his journals and with help from
other relatives had his work printed. I don't know if a copy of these volumes are still avqailable, but the name of the books are: The Durbins and
Logsdons and Related Families in America Compiled by William Jesse Durbin 1879-1974. These volumes were printed by McDowell Publications 700
Griffin, Hartford, KY 42347 (502) 298-7772. First Edition was copyrighted in 1979 by the Fayette County Genealogical Society, Vandalia, Illinois in
1979. Second Edition was printed in 1980 same company and copyright.
Uncle Jeppy never married and spent many years doing this research by interviewing those still living and by correspondence. He was limited by what
people could remember and what they chose to share with him and by the correspondence with research specialists at court houses and libraries etc. I
am truly blessed that he chose me out of all the large number of relatives to entrust this great body of work to. At the time, I questioned his choice, but
he must have forseen that I would value his hard work and someday continue his research! Can you immagine what he could have done in this day of
the internet? WOW!
Well, Look for a packet of stuff from me later in the week. I'm heading to the library to copy some of the pages I think might be of interest to you. And

I wonder if Pittsford, should be Pitchford or vice versa, because James Pitchford married Caroline Kean, then Caroline married William Westbrook.
(William Westbrook was a brother to our Alexander and Caleb.) Then, Caroline's daughter Rosetta married Alfred Westbrook, another brother to our
ancestors. He was like 40 and she was 15, and it wasn't even her first marriage! She had been married to Josiah F. Pitchford first. I don't know what
happened in this relationship as it didn't last long. Someone indicated that Alfred had at least one divorce. I have a photocopy of Alfred and Rosetta's
marriage, so I know I have the right two on this.
I was able to get a land deed for Deberryman in Montgomery County. I know where he got it....it was through a man named Caleb Cardwell, (which I
think may have been Matildas dad) anyway I would like to get a copy of this to you, as well as the transfer to a man named I think it was, Roundtree. I
don't have the files in front of me right now.
My Uncle is going to be going back up to Montgomery County in the next few weeks and see if we can't find the will or probate records for Caleb
Cardwell to see if Matilda is listed as his daughter. I know there was some information concerning other land records you wanted us to check into but,
we were there before you sent the message.
If you can get that information together he said he would also dig into that as well. We have no idea or papers about the land records for Thomas in
which you spoke of.
I know you were interested in Caleb's pension file....it doesn't list anyone of his family other then his kids. I will send you a copy if you wish. I also
obtained his will there in Montgomery County. I guess he was a very poor man as well. I think it strange though that he had land according to the will
that they sold off in 1925, (We are going to check into that land to see where he got it from) The same year Hannah died. It isn't set up like

She married Thomas in Sangamon County,
Illinois October 18, 1852.

"The Fogles were a numerous and respectable family. They were natives
of Virginia, but came here from Washington County, Pennsylvania. There were
three brothers, Jacob, Michael and Peter, who settled in the same
neighborhood. Jacob and Michael came first, and a year or two later Peter
settled on the farm where he lived and died. He came about 1818. He was
the first justice of the peace in the township, and held the office about
twenty years. He was also an active member of the Methodist Episcopal
church. He died in 1875, at the age of eighty-nine years. The Fogle
brothers were all married before they came to Ohio. Jacob lived and died in
Noble Township. His son Jacob still lives here. He and Mrs.Mary Merry
Caldwell, are the only children of Jacob Fogle now living in the county.
Michael moved from Noble Township to Enoch Township, and died there. He
left no family. Peter Fogle was twice married. His first wife was
Elizabeth Salliday, and their children were Mary, Eliza, Sarah and Margaret,
all living, the oldest two in this county. for his second wife he married
Phebe Stevens. Their children were Rachael (Rucker), who lives on part of
the homestead; John, Illinois; Lucretia, Kansas; Anna, dead; Annuary, Vinton
County, Ohio; James, Colorado; George, Kentucky and Peter, Caldwell. Peter
lived on a farm until 1879, and then engaged in hotelkeeping in Caldwell.
Since 1880 he has been in the business of undertaker and furniture dealer in
Caldwell, owning a large and fine store. He has a German Bible, printed in
1590, which has been in the Fogle family nearly three hundred years."
!Michael and Elizabeth Fogle were probably immigrants, possibly coming from a place named, "Beihingen", in Germany. They are said to have been in
Maryland, then into Washington County, Pa., for a while. Sons Jacob and Michael moved into Morgan County OH first, then brother Peter came about
two years later. Nothing is known of b & d dates & places for Michael. Death cert of son Peter R-40 states his parents are Michael & Elizabeth Fogle.
Records from; 1. Mary Van Fleet; 2. Peter Fogle's d cert; 3. Family records of 9 June Mason; Noble County Cem Rec's by Nola Eynon; and 4. "Hist of
Noble Co Ohio, 1887" page not known. Per rec of Clifford GOULD give Frostburg MD, as d p for Michael, another field gives Frederick County.
Frostburg is in either Garrett or Allegany County. IMMIGRATION RECORD; Vol 1 page 586-588, list 213-A, list of Men Pass on board the ship,
"Eastern Branch", James Nevin, Master, from Rotterdam & Portsmouth, (Qualified 3 Oct 1753), Michael Vogle, signed by his mark. This immigrant is
