What are Trade
Unions?
Trade unions are groups set up
with the aim of trying to create
fairness and job security in a
workplace.
Benefits of Trade Unions
 Managers and company owners are
dissuaded from making rash
decisions
 Workers in a union have superior job
security
 Workers in a union are more likely to
get a good wage
How are disputes
resolved?
Disputes can be resolved by either
workers or employers, but if
communications break down,
companies can turn to ACAS
What is ACAS?
 The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration
Service
 Set up to improve industrial relations
 Will talk to both employers and employees
to find common ground
 Provides a third party to review the
situation and to suggest what it believes to
be a fair settlement.
 Both employees and employers are
required to accept the results provided by
ACAS
What is the TUC?
The TUC (Trade Union
Congress) is the central body
of the unions
The Trade Union Congress…
 Aims to influence the government
 Is the ‘voice’ of the unions
 The TUC has it’s own full-time
organization
