External Sources And False Conflict

When I Was Growing Up I Always Noticed A Fascinating ThingWith My Older Stepsister And Many Of The Girls I Knew
As I grew older I saw my girlfriendsrepeat this pattern.
Once a girl would get a boyfriend, and as thegirl started spending less time with herfriends, her friends would eventually instigatesome kind of conflict between the girl and herboyfriend. They might call her with a negativerumor, or they would fish for negativeinformation about the boy and pass it along. They would inevitably find reasons to criticizethe boy and would create some sort of problem.

Her Friends Would Want Her Companionship, And WouldGenerally Grow To Resent Her For Not Being As Available
When I was in college there was one weekend when mygirlfriend had traveled out of state with the tennis team. Priorto me meeting my girlfriend, she had always done everythingwith her friend, who was also her roommate. The two spentan amazing amount of time together. On this particularFriday evening I was standing on the front porch of a buildingwhere there was a big party. My girlfriend’s best friend cameup to me and said:
“I am afraid to sleep inthe apartment alone withRebecca gone. Can yousleep next to me in myroom? I am very afraid tosleep alone without herthere.”
