Dec. 28, 2009 White House slams e. Jerusalem plans
By Hilary Krieger, Herb Keinon and Abe Selig - The Jerusalem Post
The United States on Monday harshly criticized Israel's plans to build more housing in Jerusalemneighborhoods over the green line."The United States opposes new Israeli construction in east Jerusalem," White House spokesman RobertGibbs said in a statement, calling the city a "permanent status issue" to be resolved through negotiationsbetween Israelis and Palestinians."Neither party should engage in efforts or take actions that could unilaterally pre-empt, or appear to pre-empt, negotiations," he said. "Rather, both parties should return to negotiations without preconditions assoon as possible." A State Department official told The Jerusalem Post that Israel had informed the Americans of the moveahead of its announcement, and that Washington had conveyed its displeasure at the decision."The government of Israel noted its plans to issue tenders in east Jerusalem and we strongly objected, noting that these types of announcements harm peace efforts," the official said.Still, Gibbs ended his statement on a positive note, saying that "we believe that through good faithnegotiations the parties can mutually agree on an outcome that realizes the aspirations of both parties forJerusalem, and safeguards its status for people around the world."Gibbs' statement came on the heels of an announcement made earlier Monday by government spokesmanMark Regev, which stated that nearly 700 apartments had been approved for construction in the existingJewish neighborhoods of Neveh Ya'akov, Pisgat Ze'ev and Har Homa."We make a distinction between the West Bank and Jerusalem," Regev said regarding the new plans."Jerusalem is our capital and remains such." ...http://www.jpost.com /servlet/Satellite?cid=1261364525664&pagename=JPArticle%2FShowFull
Dec. 29, 2009 Netanyahu Leaves Egypt, Hears Criticism on Building for Jews
By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu - Arutz Sheva
(Israelnationalnews.com) Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu returned from Egypt Tuesday eveningafter day-long talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his foreign minister, who stronglycriticized their visitor for continuing construction for Jews in some Jerusalem neighborhoods. The new building tenders in the predominantly Jewish areas of Har Homa, in southern Jerusalem, andNeveh Yaakov and Pisgat Ze'ev to the north, are located in parts of the capital that the Palestinian Authority claims should be under its sovereignty."Such behavior raises questions about the serious willingness of Israel to reach a definitive agreement andleads one to believe that Israel is trying to welch on its obligations for a just and lasting peace," ForeignMinister Ahmed Abul Gheit stated to the official MENA news agency.
Obama applying pressure
The meeting between the two leaders was an indication that the United States is exercising heavy pressureon PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas “to accept whatever conditions the Americans may be putting forth,”Mouin Rabbani, a senior fellow at the Institute of Palestinian Studies, told Al Jazeera. The Obama administration reportedly is drafting letters for both Israel and the PA with unknownguarantees for the resumption of negotiations over the PA’s stated desire to become an independentcountry.Former Meretz Knesset Member Yossi Beilin has claimed that the Prime Minister has agreed to negotiate the borders of Jerusalem, which Netanyahu has said is the undivided capital of Israel. Governmentspokesman Mark Regev replied that "Mr. Beilin only speaks for Mr. Beilin."U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell is scheduled to arrive in the region next week with what has been touted as a new diplomatic initiative. The PA, backed by the Arab world, has in effect rejected negotiations until now, by demanding that talksresume only after Israel agrees to accept the borders that existed before the Six-Day War in 1967. The American Roadmap calls for direct negotiations between Israel and the PA concerning the formation of anew Arab state.http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/135259
