THE BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND
is anindependent private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedicalsciences by supporting research and other scientific and educationalactivities.Within this broad mission, BWF seeks to accomplish twoprimary goals-to help scientists early in their careers develop asindependent investigators, and to advance fields in the basic biomedicalsciences that are undervalued or in need of particular encouragement. With its endowment of more than $750 million, BWF makesapproximately $30 million in grants annually in the United States andCanada.BWF’s financial support is channeled primarily through com-petitive peer-reviewed award programs, which encompass five majorcategories:biomedical sciences, infectious diseases, interfaces inscience, translational research, and science education.BWF makesgrants primarily to degree-granting institutions on behalf of individualresearchers, who must be nominated by their institutions. To complementthese competitive award programs, BWF also makes grants to nonprofitorganizations conducting activities intended to improve the generalenvironment for science.Governed by a Board of Directors composed of distinguishedscientists and business leaders, BWF was founded in 1955 as thecorporate foundation of the pharmaceutical firm Burroughs WellcomeCo.In 1993, a generous gift from BWF’s sister philanthropy in theUnited Kingdom, the Wellcome Trust, enabled BWF to become fullyindependent from the company, which was acquired by Glaxo in 1995.BWF has no affiliation with any corporation.
