BY Priti MarappanProgram: Electrical Engg(MS)Date of Birth: 11/16/1986
My decision to apply for the graduate program at ‘Virginia Techis driven by myaspirations to pursue a research based career in the area of Communications. My otherareas of interest are networking and network security. I see an MS program as a crucialfirst step towards achieving my career objective. As a statement of purpose of mygraduate study, I describe here my academic background, my career progression andmy research interests. The foundation for my MS program has been laid by my undergraduate degree inElectronics Engineering. The program has provided me a strong and comprehensivebackground in many areas of Electronics and Communications; a fact that is reflected inmy top grades. The program has also provided a foundation of courses in mathematicsand computers. In my second year of engineering I developed a fascination for robotics.I started interacting with seniors and faculty members to help me gain a betterunderstanding of the subject. As an amateur I started making simple wired motor drivenrobot. But as I delved deeper into the subject I realized the importance of embeddedsystems in automation. As I read more about these technologies, I developed a greaterinclination towards Microcontrollers and VLSI and started admiring their ubiquitouspresence in our daily lives. I substantiated my interest by reading books on these topicsand participating in seminars on the same. To further enhance my knowledge in theseareas, I undertook independent projects in robotics that I presented at several roboticscompetitions. I was amongst the quarter finalist at the level 1 robotics intercollegiatecompetition ‘Niyantran 2006and ‘Niyantran 2007organized by InstrumentationSystems Auotmation.
Until my second year, my approach to any aspect of engineering science was purelyacademic. So it is rather surprising for me that I would discover my passion for highereducation in a non-academic situation. It was during my second year that I got my firstpersonal computer. Finally the gateway to the world ‘The Internet’ was open to me.However, my foray in this gateway was anything but smooth. Ranging from networkfailures to a virus attack on my system, I had to face everything that is a nightmare fora person who wants to constantly access the internet. However, rather than just calling alocal technician to fix things up, I decided to try things firsthand. This was when Istarted getting familiar with the concepts of networking and security. As a result I endedup choosing wireless communication as my elective in my final year against the muchpopular and scoring electives. As I delved deeper and deeper into the subject, I realizedthe potential this field has, in terms of research and application, two things which Ialways have been keen on. In order to get familiar with the nuances of networking andcommunication, as my final year project I chose to work on a project where my teamsimulated the MAC Sub-layer Transmitter using 802.11 Protocol on Verilog HDL. The goalof the project was to build frames, obtain high throughput, reliable data delivery, and toobtain continuous network connections over the medium. Working on this project notonly provided me the opportunity to implement the wide range of concepts I had studiedin class, but also has added tremendously to my learning process. Additionally workingas a team, I had the chance to learn and inculcate several aspects of projectmanagement like team coordination, time management, knowledge sharing and effectivecommunication. While my academics have always been my focus, I have paid equal attention to otherareas of my curriculum as well, and have made a judicious attempt at making a foray invaried domains. For instance I participated in the ‘IGNOBEL’ creative paper presentationon the topic ‘Invisibility and managed to reach the finals in national level technical
festival of VJTI. And I have also actively taken part in organizing the various cultural andtechnical festivals in my college.Even though I desired to pursue graduate studies immediately after my bachelors, Ichose to gain some practical experience in becoming independent before I embarked onmy journey of higher education. I joined TCS and have had the opportunity to work onprojects involving the development of various web applications. During my tenure atTCS, besides gaining proficiency in areas of software development, I have also learnt themost essential professional qualities like client communications, importance of planningto meet stringent target deadlines and the relevance of teamwork. By working on realtime projects, I gained insights into practical difficulties at project execution. Besidesensuring that the designs we implement meet the specifications and standards, myresponsibilities involve developing project artifacts like design documents and test plansto cater to the client’s requirements. I am well regarded for my knowledge, myconfidence at solving technical issues and my eagerness to learn new technologies. This has made me one of the youngest Module Leaders in my team. My work experiencehas helped me improve on my time management, problem solving and team skills not tomention my technical expertise too. I have also learnt to work patiently under pressureand in extremely demanding and chaotic situations. However my career goal is to make a foray as a technology specialist in the wirelesscommunication/networking arena. I thus see a graduate degree in this area as a vitalstep in educating myself. I would like to pursue a career that would have a stronginclination towards research. A graduate program is thus necessary not only to increasemy knowledge in the area of communications and related areas in electronics, but alsoenhance and sharpen my researching abilities. I am fully aware of the hard work andperseverance required for graduate studies and I believe that I have the aptitude, theopenness of mind, and drive to meet the challenge.
