Ms. Paolino,
Imagine my surprise yesterday when I opened my mail and found a piece of your
campaign literature which prominently features a photograph of me, standing
behind you, wearing my Chief's uniform. I was perplexed by this. You never called
to ask my permission to use my image. No one from your campaign ever bothered to
ask my permission to use this photograph. In fact, I have never given you or anyone
from your campaign my support, endorsement or permission to advertise with my
picture. I must conclude that you deliberately used my uniformed picture without
my permission because you thought it would look good in your campaign literature.
‘The problem is that I am not supporting you. Your unauthorized use of my
photograph was particularly troubling to me as it leads my friends, colleagues and
neighbors to think (falsely) that | am endorsing your candidacy. Let me be clear. I
am NOT.
Ihave proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for 36 years. I have served as the
Chief of the Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company for the last 7. As Chief, it
has been my honor to lead a group of dedicated men and women who selflessly
serve their community. Perhaps for a politician like you, the event memorialized in
the photograph you hijacked was unmemorable. For me it was not. This image was
taken at a memorial for the 343 firefighters whom lost their lives on September 11,
2001. Itis truly heartbreaking that a politician would exploit this national tragedy
to advance her political ambitions ~ all for a good “photo op”. Your conduct tells me
all I need to know about your lack of respect and lack of understanding of the daily
sacrifices made by volunteer firefighters, police, paramedics and other first
responders. Your campaign literature says what you want us to believe, but your
conduct, in politicizing this memorial, has shown me the truth about you. You are
unworthy of our support.
Many members of the volunteer firefighting community contacted me after
receiving your mailer. Rest assured, you did not gain any votes through your misuse
of my image. Interestingly, although you have been a commissioner for a decade, no
one could identify a single program or initiative you led on behalf of volunteer
