Alarm level of exhaust gas temperature-T/C outlet
ENGINE TYPE: K/L/S-MC/MC-C
The set point of exhaust gas temperature high alarm at turbocharger
outlet is now 320T.
We have some inquiries whether it is permissible of the higher set
point, as there is not much margin from the normal value at low
load condition in this setting and some irregular alarms
sometimes occur.
It varies depending on engine type, but at 40-50% load where
auxiliary blower turns off, exhaust gas temperature reaches its
peak and there are only 30-60% margin from the setting point.
Therefore when the vessel sails in the area where engine room
temperature is high, some false alarms may occur
The purpose of the exhaust gas outlet alarm is to protect the
cylinder components against thermal overload due to abnormal
combustion and deterioration of turbocharger performance.
Therefore, when the alarm is acting at high load, the set point at
320T is very relevant and should not be raised for
preventing thermal overload at high load
Meanwhile under low load condition of below 50% load, even if
exhaust gas temperature of turbocharger outlet reaches alarm set
point, as fuel oil injection amount and maximum pressure in
cylinder is less than the one at high load condition and thermal
load is not so high, it is acceptable to operate with 10-30T
higher than the set point.
As a conclusion, it is recommended to keep the set point at 320T
and in case that exhaust gas temperature reaches the alarm set
point below 50% load, record it in the log book and no further
action is necessary.
