Fuel Pump Cavitation
ENGINE TYPE: K98MC/MC-C, S90MC-C
The so-called Bosch type fuel pumps have been used on MAN B&W Diesel
engines for decades, and cavitation in the pump spill ports is
sometimes seen after extensive use. However, the cavitation has
been acceptable because it has developed slowly, and has not harmed
the engine performance or reduced the lifetime of the pump barrel.
We have now seen cases with faster developing cavitation on our
largest fuel pumps used on K98MC/MC-C and S90MC-C, as seen on the
drawing below.
Fig. 4
The cavitation is located in the upper part of the spill port and
may vary in extent. The cut-off hole on the inside of the barrel
is, in any case, unaffected.
However the visual appearance has given rise to further
investigation of possible influence on the performance. Our
investigations have concluded that performance is unaffected.
If cavitation reaches the inner edge of the cylindrical part of the
spill port, it will in principle affect the closing of the fuel
valve. When the area increases, the fuel valve will, in principle,
close a little faster. However, as the spill port caviation is
always located in the upper part of the spill hole, the fuel valve
will be almost closed before the additional area is uncovered.

Consequently, cavitation will not lead to any significant effect
on the injection profile. Please refer to the below injection
profile with and without additional spill port area. In this
connection it should be remembered that the start of injection
is determined by the so-called timing holes positioned higher
than the spill ports and is not affected by the cavitation
experienced.
The below drawing shows a simulation of the injection profile
with a new pump and a pump with cavitated spill hole

In the simulation, cavitation is assumed to increase the
cylindrical part of the spill port area by 25%.
The stress level in the thick-walled barrel is so low that even
with cativation the stress level will be kept well within
acceptable values.
In our experience, the cavitation will not develop beyond the
level seen after some 13,000 hours. We believe it stops or
develops with reduced effect when a certain amount of material
has been removed
We advise you to keep the spill ports under observation. The
spill ports can be inspected through the plug screws on the aft
and fore sides of the pump housing, and we recommend that this
is carried out at intervals of 3,000 running hours.
