Your State Representative - 12
 th
Legislative District
 Winter 2008
Dear Friends:
Welcome to my Winter 2009 newsletter. Once again, let mebegin by saying thank you for the opportunity to serve you in thePennsylvania House of Representatives, it has definitely been anexciting year. After the unprecedented 101-day stalemate and, as a result, being forced to cancel numerous appearances at so many of our region’s most important events due to my legislative responsibilitiesin Harrisburg, I am very disappointed to report that I had no other option but to vote against the state budget.Recognizing that
state government always has a choicebetween raising or reducing taxes
, this year’s
$27.8 billionbudget
provided the
wrong answers
during some of the
worsteconomic times
for
all Pennsylvania taxpayers
.This year’s budget also:

Failed
to address the
hundreds
of
millions
of
dollars
 in
welfare fraud
identified by Auditor General Jack Wagner.

Levied
more than
 $1 billion
in
additional taxes
.

Retroactively increased
the
 job-killing Capital Stock
and
Franchise Tax
by
$374 million
.

Drained critical state reserve funds
, including the
$755million Rainy Day Fund, $708 million Heath Care Provider Retention Account, $400 million Tobacco EndowmentAccount
and
 $100 million MCARE Fund.
In short, this continued path of destruction failed to offer Pennsylvania the opportunities necessary to create a morebusiness-friendly economic climate to assist our employers inemerging stronger and more vibrant so that even more hometown jobs are available for our residents. If you have any questions, comments or concerns relating to stategovernment issues, please do not hesitate to stop by or contact myClarion or NuMine district offices. My staff and I are here to workfor you.Serving the 63rd District,State Representative

Taking A Stand Fo
Oberlander Salutes More Than90 Local Korean War Heroes
There are few things that I do as a state representativethat I enjoy more than saying thanks and praising thosecitizens who have distinguished themselves in serving ourcountry. On Oct. 24, I had the distinct honor and privilege of formally recognizing more than
90 local Korean War veterans
for their service to our nation during a specialceremony held at Union High School. In addition to a moving DVD tribute, this event alsofeatured a keynote address delivered by the
HonorableCharles R. Alexande
, senior judge, Court of CommonPleas and patriotic music performed by soloist Marissa Lahrand the Union High School Band. The colors presenta-tion and rifle salute were performed by members of theRimersburg American Legion

Post 454 and Rimersburg VFWPost 7132.For me, the grand finale came when I personally recog-nized each veteran in attendance with a commemorativecertificate and lapel pin.I cannot thank my staff enough for expertly organizingan event that was a fitting tribute to these veterans andone that evoked so many wonderful memories for themand their loved ones. It has been more than five decades since the end of the Korean War, which is often referred to as America’sForgotten War. We are blessed that so many veterans fromthis era call this region their home, and it was my objec-tive by hosting this ceremony to make sure that not oneof them feels forgotten.Any Korean War veteran living in the 63
rd
Legisla-tive District who did not receive a certificate and pin isencouraged to contact my Clarion district office at
