MOOCs

The Snapshot Version

By Sasha Thackaberry
What are MOOCs? MOOCs are Massive Open Online Courses. They are free online courses that can enroll tens, or even hundreds of
thousands of learners. Their formats and pedagogies are constantly evolving. There is no one size fits all MOOC. The salient
components are 1) free (though there may be a charge for certificates, micro-credentialing, or proctoring), 2) large enrollment numbers
and/or potential enrollment numbers, 3) online (though blended models are being developed with institutions), and 4) courses, not just
resources.

What It Is
Traditional MOOC
This type of MOOC closely resembles a regular online
course. It is typically driven by instructor-led lectures, autograded quizzes and/or peer assessments.
Connectivist MOOC
This type of MOOC is a networked MOOC, typified by the
exchange of knowledge from one participant to another. This
type of MOOC is more often distributed across a variety of
networks, though it may be housed mainly in one Learning
Management System (LMS).

Udemy has 4,000,000 students with courses

Many of its courses have costs associated

the courses are not all open.
