is the enterprise software division of information technologycompany Hewlett-Packard (HP). Beginning in Sept. 2005 through 2008, HP purchased a total of 12 software companies as part of a publicized, deliberate strategy to augment its softwareofferings for large business customers.
HP Software & Solutions markets its software in four categories: IT management software,information management software, business intelligence solutions, and communications andmedia software and solutions. HP Software & Solutions also provides consulting, software as aservice, education and support services.
IT management software
is also called business technology optimization (BTO) software. Thissoftware aligns to HP's approach to IT management that allows businesses to reduce costs andmake better business decisions by allocating IT spend and resources based on business priorities;automating key processes across IT strategy, applications, and operations; and measuring ITeffectiveness and efficiency from a business perspective.HP markets its BTO software portfolio in three main categories:
Business and IT alignment solutions that give managers visibility into everythingthe IT department delivers-- including people, assets, budget, and spending--sothat resource investments can be aligned with business priorities and with budgets.
Application lifecycle management solutions are software products designed toimprove application quality and efficiency through a lifecycle approach thatincludes requirements, quality, governance, performance and security.
Predictive service operations software solutions help IT operations teams to movefrom reactive operations management to proactive prevention. These solutionshelp operations teams make sure everything works in production, fix it if itdoesn’t, and change it when it needs to be changed—without disrupting the business.
Information Management
includes software and solutions for e-discovery, regulatorycompliance and records management, and solutions for backup and archiving of email, files andapplications. HP solutions for information management help CIOs, IT managers, recordsmanagers, compliance officers, legal counsels, and line-of-business managers cope with thegrowth of unstructured information such as email, office documents, Microsoft SharePoint files,rich media, user-generated web content, and other data.HP markets its information management software portfolio in three main categories:
Business continuity and availability solutions for implementing an effectivestrategy for data protection and performance archiving.
Governance and e-discovery solutions for creating, delivering, managing, andretaining documents and communications and leveraging them across theenterprise.

Communications & media solutions
are marketed by HP under four specific solution domains:

Customer intelligence and billing covers mediation and real-time charging, dataretention and management, and the CentralView solution family, which includesofferings that range from fraud management to revenue assurance and dealer management.
 Next generation operational support systems (NGOSS) spans from service provisioning and management to assurance, including network fault and elementmanagement.
Digital media addresses the conversion of analog content to digital, digital contentmanagement and distribution.
HP Software Services
are designed to help CIOs improve the predictability of businessoutcomes at each stage of an IT project life cycle.
HP Professional Services helps minimize cost by identifying and choosing thesolutions most likely to succeed; helps accelerate time to value through “right thefirst time” development and deployment of new software investments;
HP Support Services can help reduce risk by improving and maintainingcontinuity, stability and performance. The offerings also help with training so thatend-users can get the most out of the software; and
HP Software-as-a-Service is designed to allow customers to focus on businessoutcomes, rather than running software. Customers usually can leverage solutionsin days without upfront capital expenditures associated with software projects.
