Arthritis as defined by MosbyMedical Encyclopedia is sim-ply any inflammation of thejoints. Everyone will mostlikely develop some type ofarthritis in his or her lifetime. While there are many typesof arthritis, osteoarthritis is themost common. It can occuranywhere in the body but ismost often found in the knee, hip, and spine due to the highstress that these areas endureover time. Some commonsymptoms include pain afterexercise or after using theinvolved joint, stiffness, andrubbing noises (clicking andpopping). The cartilage thatnormally cushions the jointbecomes soft and breaksdown which can allow the joint

to become misaligned overtime. Therefore, chiropracticcan be an effective treat-ment for arthritis because itrealigns the joint which in turnallows the joint to move morenaturally. The more motionthat is available to the joint, the less likely symptoms ofarthritis will be present. The past year has been fullof top news headlines. ThePittsburgh Steelers won theSuper Bowl, the Yankees wonthe World Series, MichaelJackson died, BernardMadoff plead guilty to a$64 Billion Ponzi Scheme,Tiger Woods hit a tree exit-ing his driveway, and theHouse of Representativesand Senate passed a healthcare reform bill.Should the President sign thisinto law, it will certainly be oneof the many newsworthy eventsfor 2010.The government is looking forways to provide insurance cov-erage for all while controllinghealthcare costs. An interestingarticle worth noting regardinghealthcare costs and chiropracticis in the Archives of InternalMedicine (Oct. 2004). A Com-parative Analysis of IndividualsWith and Without ChiropracticCoverage was done and it wasfound that chiropractic care mayreduce overall health care costsespecially when substituting chi-ropractic for traditional medical
care,
particularly for spinal con-ditions. They also found thatpatients who received chiro-practic care had lower averageback pain episode-related costs. There are many studies thatsuggest that people whoincorporate chiropractic careinto their lifestyles tend to bemore active and less likely tosuffer from common every-day injuries or conditionssuch as headaches, low backpain, and stress. While chiro-practic is an important com-
ponent of healthy living, it’s
important to remember thatthe best preventative medi-cine starts at home by eatinghealthy foods and having anactive lifestyle. This is theonly true way to change thestate of health in our country.

After suffering with se-vere hip pain on my rightside for about twoweeks, I decided to visitDr. Lucas Cole. I thought Ihad a severe hip issuebecause at that point, Icould hardly walk andhad to grab walls anddoor frames for stability. After my initial treatmentwith Dr. Cole, I had sig-nificant relief and afterfollowing his prescribedexercises, I am now painfree. I have been goingto chiropractors since1980 and am convincedthat I am as mobile as Iam and have avoidedsurgical interventions formy degenerative discissues because of the chi-ropractic care that I have
received. Dr. Cole’s ap-
proach is highly individu-alized because he takestime to listen and asksquestions about specificareas of concern beforehe begins treatment.
