Alec Keeper
Stonemasonry
I worked with stone on an arts
project and enjoyed it so much that
I wanted to study the material in
much more depth.
In a way, I’ve gone full circle - I
studied to be an architect several
years ago, but decided it wasn’t for
me and moved in to photography
instead. I didn’t want to work on
buildings via a computer, but rather
hands-on with building materials
from a craft perspective.
I’ve come on to the stonemasonry
course at Glasgow Met as a
mature student through the adult
apprenticeship scheme. It took
me two years to find an employer
- you need to have an employer to
sponsor you through the course -
but I got there eventually! It’s been
worth the wait - everything we’ve
covered so far is very relevant to the
work place which is one of the key
reasons why I picked this course
in the first place. I have particularly
enjoyed learning how to cut and
dress stone.
I want to be a properly trained, fully
qualified stonemason and know
that this course will certainly give
me that as well as help me on my
new career path.

My parents influenced me to take this course at Glasgow Met. I chose this particular
course so that I could speak and understand English better. It has been a very
positive experience for me, in particular meeting lots of other students with the same
English language needs as me. I now feel that can speak much better English and
can communicate with greater confidence. I am now ready to start my new course
next term at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where I will study
saxophone.

Introduction to Computers
I’m 54 and kind of missed out on learning about computers; people would ask me for
an email address and I didn’t have one – even my old aunties had one! So I decided
to find a course that could get me started from scratch. My sister had been at this
college and recommended it. I was very apprehensive, but needn’t have been - the
lecturer was great, so helpful and informative. The facilities were also excellent. The
course has really helped boost my confidence and gave me the foundation knowledge
and skills I wanted – I am now moving on to the intermediate level class next term.

Art & Design Portfolio Preparation
I’ve always been interested in art and design and had always wanted to do a class.
So, I googled art classes; I read over the details about this class and it seemed
absolutely perfect. And it was! I loved being back in the classroom and the class also
had a good mix of people. It was fantastic to have the freedom to visually express
myself and I got to develop my portfolio. I am moving on to the Contemporary
Painting Practices course next term. Looking further ahead, I would like to go to Art
School and make a career of art.

Decorative Glass
I’ve had a long standing interest in Art and Architecture which made me aware of this
unique medium. Although I was already aware of this particular evening course, it was
an ex student of the course that convinced me to apply. The course has provided
the ideal opportunity to learn and practice decorative glass skills whilst being in full
time employment and having family responsibilities. There is a real community spirit
amongst my fellow students and I thoroughly enjoy how the course is taught. I now
have a greater appreciation of decorative glass skills and expertise and am much
more aware of its full possibilities. I would love to do the full time course at some point
in the future.

Italian Cookery
I looked at a few colleges before choosing Glasgow Met – it has such a wide variety
of courses compared to other colleges. I am wheelchair bound and was really nervous
about coming to college, but nothing was too much for the staff – everyone was so
helpful and supportive, from the Extended Learning Support staff and janitor to the
lecturer himself. We covered so much in the class, making basic pasta, risotto, fish
and vegetable dishes. The whole experience has really boosted my confidence so I
already have my name down to do ‘Fine Dining’ and ‘Asian cookery’ - I can’t wait to
come back!

Airline Cabin Crew Preparation
One of my friends had done this course last year and recommended it. I didn’t take
much persuasion as I knew it would look good on my CV. I really enjoyed the course,
especially the practical side. We were also given helpful tips and hints for interview
skills which I found particularly useful when I was looking for a new job. Employers are
impressed when they see you’ve been on this course – it definitely helped me get my
job at ‘My Travel’.
