Weather station
A
weather station
is a facility with instruments and equipment for observingatmosphericconditions to provide information for weather forecastsand to study the weather andclimate. The measurements taken includetemperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitationamounts. Wind measurements are taken as free of other obstructions as possible, while temperature and humiditymeasurements are kept free from direct solar radiation, or insolation. Manualobservations are taken at least once daily, while automated observations are taken at leastonce an hour.
Instruments
Typical weather stations have the following instruments:
Thermometer for measuring temperature
Barometer for measuring barometric pressure/air pressure
Hygrometer for measuring humidity
Anemometer for measuring wind speed
Wind vanefor measuring wind direction
Rain gaugefor measuring precipitation
Exposure
Except for those instruments requiring direct exposure to the elements (anemometer, rain gauge), the instruments should be sheltered in a vented box, usually aStevenson screen, to keep direct sunlight off thethermometer and wind off thehygrometer. The instrumentation may be specialized to allow for periodic recording otherwise significantmanual labour is required for record keeping. Automatic transmission of data, in a formatsuch asMETAR , is also desirable as many weather station's data is required for weather  forecasting.
Networks
A variety of weather station networks have been set up globally. Some of these are basicto analyzingweather frontsand pressure systems, such as the synoptic observationnetwork, while others are more regional in nature.
