Liberty Christmas Tree Lighting Bigger Than Ever
Wow is all I can say. December 7th, Monday night in Liberty was full of holiday cheer andfun. As is years past the Liberty Chamber pulled out all the stops for an awesome Christmastradition. This year we had two special guests. That would be no other than Mr Santa himself and this year Cindy Farmer from Fox8 News. These two was a dynamicduo that flipped the switch to illumi-nate the downtown tree with thou-sands of twinkling lights. Cindyspoke to the crowds and encouragedall to have a Merry Christmas. Santadid as normal with landing his sleighat the Liberty Fire Department and being delivered on a fire truck. Thelocal fire fighters helped feed andwater the reindeer as Santa spent histime listening to each childrenChristmas list. While in line, Free-dom Family Church of Liberty, pro-vided professional 5x7 photos of thechildren with Santa. The Chamber helped with getting all the children in the great order to visit with Santa. As the children leftthe Liberty Chiropractic Office (A big thanks to Dr Tom Blake for allowing us to continue touse his facility as center stage for this event) they were able to get free balloons courtesy oRandolph Telephone. The stage was on Depot Street (special thanks to ACTS Accountingfor providing the power for the stage) we had a huge line up of local entertainment thatranged from Liberty School Pre– K and also the Kindergarten classes to local like AprilMiller and Keith Bartell and the band from Winston that loves Liberty, Tanners Revengethat provided the sound system for thenight. The final act was a request bymany from last year and that was thehigh spirited Staley Baptist ChurchSingers. A special thanks to CelebrateLiberty’s Children for lining up andcoordinating all the great music for thenight. Well, we were blessed another year with a live nativity scene fromParks Cross Road Christian Church. From live camels to live actors, this gavethe true meaning of our season, the birthof our Savior, Jesus Christ. Well flipover to page 2 and 3 for more on this….

Liberty Resident Makes MuchNeeded Donation To Town
Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!
The Town of Liberty’s Public Works Department, like manyother local municipalities, are victims of a troubling econ-omy. They needed an expensive machine to help maintain the27 miles of underground sewer lines in the town, however, this year’s budget just couldn’t make it a reality, so, BobVaughn, the Public Works Director, decided to get creative. He researched and found a “next best” solution; a piece of equipment that cost about $65,0000 less, that could meet themost immediate critical need. “We needed a machine setup sothat one man could handle it alone on these nights and week-ends, when many of the sewer problems occur.” Said Bob.The problem was that the machine was too heavy for oneman to load and unload from the bed of a pickup truck. As heroad through the town on his daily tour of duty, Bob discov-ered several small trailers sitting in the yards of some localresidents. He placed a note on the doors of them asking if theowners would be interested in selling them to the Town.Early the next morning, the Town Manager, Roger Davis, discovered a voice message on the town’s answering systemfrom a local resident offering one of the trailers at no charge,as a courtesy. “ We played the message over and over, saidBob, because it was just too good to be true!Bob phonedGerald Varner, of Varner Roofing And Siding, the owner of the trailer. Yes, it was true, we could have the trailer. “Justcome get it, “I’ll sign the Title over to you, said Varner. “Iwasted no time in responding.” It worked out perfectly. Thetrailer had a retractable loading gate that made it perfect for rolling the equipment on and off with ease. Just as promised,Joel Varner arrived at Town hall Tuesday with Title in hand.“We are so excited that the local residents of Liberty arewilling to “Step Up”, to help the Town through these tougheconomic times.” This, Virginia, is what makes Liberty sospecial. We are not at all ashamed to admit to the economicstress we are under. Anyone’s assistance is openly, and gra-ciously appreciated. The next thing on our wish list is a re-tractable extension cord reel, and a tool box to house the vari-ous attachments the machine uses. Thank you Gerald Varner. It could only happen in Liberty!
