Twelve countries signed the original Antarctic Treaty on 1 December 1959 in


Washington, DC. Subsequently, another 35 countries signed onto the Antarctic
Treaty, making a total of 47 states. Over time, the treaty has been complemented by
other agreements. More recently, one important addition was the Environmental
Protection Protocol, signed in Madrid in 1991; it proclaimed Antarctica as a
“Natural reserve dedicated to peace and science.”
