BROCHURE
Description:

Brochure for a fictional mountain biking company

Programs:

InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop

Date:

12/6/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Pen Pingel

Objectives:

Create an attractive brochure showcasing the skills I have learned.

Process:

I used InDesign to arrange all the pictures and text boxes and, to create hierarchy
in the text, I used paragraph styles for my header and sub headers. I used
Illustrator to create my logo. In Photoshop I used the magnetic lasso tool to
capture the image of the bike and rider that I wanted to use for a text wrap.
I then took the selection, refined the edge and applied a filter that gave a
rough edge.

MONTAGE
Description:

Project to showcase masking abilities by making a montage of two or more

pictures.

Programs:

Photoshop

Date:

10/24/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

A project to showcase Photoshop masking.

Process:

I first decided on a quote that I thought was special. I then began to think
about what types of pictures I might find that related to that quote. Once
I had some pictures to look at, I decided on my color scheme and message
and that narrowed down the photos considerably. I placed the raincloud
picture and then in a new layer I placed the man in the rain picture and
applied a mask to blend the two images together.

IMAGING
Description:

Photography and designing in Photoshop

Programs:

Photoshop

Date:

10/16/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

A project that showcases photography and design talents.

Process:

I first decided on an analogous color scheme featuring green, lime, and yellow. I
want something natural and positive to showcase and I felt this color scheme gave
that impression. After I obtained my photograph, I put it into Photoshop and
used the Levels, Vibrance/Saturation, Selective Color, and Sharpen Tools. I
then looked at the focal point and flow and decided to align my quote with
the edge of the flowers where my eye traveled after the focal point.

LOGO
Description:

Create a set of three different logos. Show difference in graphic, textual,

and color content.

Programs:

I used Adobe Illustrator to make my logos. The tools that I used the most in
Illustrator were the type tool, the shape tool and the pen tool.

Date:

11/1/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To demonstrate my ability to make a logo using Illustrator.

Process:

I used Illustrator to create the elements of the logo to the size of one inch. I
considered and used different typefaces and color schemes to come up with
several logos for choices. I then took informal poll about the logos and
found that logo number two (middle logo) was the best received.

EVENT AD
Description:

A project that uses scanned and edited photos to make an event ad.

Programs:

Microsoft Word

Date:

10/10/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

A project to showcase the ability to use Microsoft Word to create a successful event ad.

Process:

I scanned the picture that I had chosen. I then used Microsoft Word to size and
position the picture and text appropriately. I used the Insert > Shapes > Line to
draw vertical and horizontal lines frequently to check alignment. I used the
Shapes feature to draw the stars and then changed the opacity to give them a
less prominent look. I created several boxes for my text with rounded edges.

A flier created in Illustrator that uses provided images and logo.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator

Date:

10/3/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

A project to create a flier in Illustrator that promotes a leadership conference.

Process:

I decided in each of my elements that I would place on the flier. I then decided
on hierarchy for each element based on audience. I then placed each element.
To create a unified composition, I used repeating boxes. I made the word
graduate large and rotated it to add interest and to reach my audience. I then
grouped information that had similar hierarchy.

STATIONERY
Description:

A project using a logo that I created to make a stationery page.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Date:

11/8/2014 and 12/11/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To create a stationery page using a logo with hierarchy, focal point, and visual flow.

Process:

I brought in my logo from Illustrator and arranged in the upper left corner of
the stationery. I then decided to place the other information close to the logo. I
then decided that the stationery needed another image to aid in visual flow and
so I added the cherry in the right corner.

BUSINESS CARD
Description:

A project to create business cards in Illustrator and InDesign.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Date:

11/8/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To create a business card that is attractive and shows good use of the principles of
design.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to design my graphic elements using the pen and
shapes tools. I decided after I created the cupcakes (one for each sister) that
I really liked the cherry. The cherry then became my point of interest and
I tried to include it in each of my designs. Throughout the process I tried
to incorporate elements of contrast (the red cherry), alignment(of text
and graphic elements), and hierarchy(grouping similar elements) to
improve my design.

WEB PAGE
Description:

A project to create a simple web page using HTML and CSS.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator, Notepad++

Date:

11/21/2014

Course:

Comm 130

Instructor:
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To create a web page using HTML and CSS that uses the principles of design.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create a custom bullet point for the web page. I
worked to create alignment between my different elements by changing the
padding and indents. I also worked to create unity by incorporating the
colors from my logo into the text and boxes of the web page. I decided to
simplify the message by removing a box around part of my text that was
interrupting flow, and I changed my bullet point from a cupcake to a
simple cherry.
