HOW DO WE KNOW JESUS IS THE CHRIST?
By Harold Smith
QUESTION: Did Jesus ever claim to be the Messiah, or Savior?ANSWER: Yes.Before addressing this, I want to point out that Jesus was many thingsthat He never claimed to be.He was born of a virgin, but He never said He was.He was the Seed of the woman, but He never said He was.He was more than He ever said He was.The Scriptures say far more about Him, than He said of Himself.There are teachers who say He never claimed to be the Son of God, but Scriptures said He is the Son of God. He also said it Himself.The word for Messias or Messiah is only mentioned twice in the NewTestament.As to Him
claiming to be the Messiah in John 4, Jesus talks with awoman,
this is part of that conversation;
“The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which iscalled Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith untoher,I that speak unto thee am he.”
Verses 25 and 26The only other place the word is mentioned is John 1:41, whereAndrew said,“ .
. first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him,Wehave found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”
The word ’Messiah’ is Hebrew in origin and is interchangeable withthe word ‘Christ.’The great confession of Christianity is found in Matthew 16:16, 17when Jesus asked His disciples who He was;
“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, theSon of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessedart thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it untothee, but my Father which is in heaven
.”Did Jesus claim to be the Savior? Listen to what He said;
