About the Artwork
Derek Glaskin has mastered a tropical “primitive” style that powerfully and symbolically conveyscultural and mystical meanings. He first covers the canvas with sacred words and symbols, thenpaints over that using enamels. The paintings include Hindu Gods, Polynesian peoples and thewatchful Hawaiian guardian owl,
 amakua
. The blue and yellow tribal petroglyphs, based on rockcarvings made by ancient Kauaians, depict rainbows, sailing vessels, rivers, birds, flowers, familiesand ancestors. Temple founder Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami appears in all three works (oneappears inside). Derek described how Lord Murugan came to him in a vision during the

-day exe-cution of this art, inwardly conveying profound insights which he softly included in the art. In theabove work Derek captured the carvers’ intense focus of mind as they work on their stones.
