Last weekend I was fortunate
enoughto be able to go to
WashingtonD.C. lt was truly an
amazingexperience.I don't think
there are words to adequately
describethe feeling of walking
through the streets of D.C.
surroundedby so many gay people.
The feelingwas at time
overwhelming.In the White House,
at the Capitol,viewingthe
Monuments,ridingthe Metro,and (of
course) in Dupont Circle there were
gay people everywhere.Everyone
was friendly.There was a very
festive feeling in the air. I can't
believethe numbersthat the Park
Service is announcing! The City of
WashingtonD.C. puts the estimate
at 1,OOO,OO0. That seems to be a
very reasonablenumber.After all,
therewere peopleeverywhere!
Saturdaynight found us dancingat
the MethodistChurch along with
membersof D.C. Lambda Squares
and dancersfrom all over the
country.News coverageseemed to
be favorable.A couple squares
danced in front of the White House
duringthe March. NBC broadcast
livefrom Washingtonon Sundayand
showedsome IAGSDCmembers
dancingwhilewaitingto march.
Overall,it was a truly incredible
weekendfilledwith memoriesto last
a very longtime.

As many of you will already have heard, Cap passedaway on April 3. Cap had been a member of Western Star for ten
years,enrichingour club with his senseof fun, his enthusiasm,and a truly uniquesenseof style.He graduatedwith the
December'83class,one of the few dancersin club historyto learnboth the lead and followpositionssimultaneously
from the start (WSD has neverencouragedthis, but by the time the instructorand angelsrealizedhe was changingsides
eachweek, it was a done deal).Logicallyenough,Cap co-taughta seriesof 'Learnthe Other Role'workshopsin the
BO's,as well as some cloggingworkshopsat Cazadero.In additionto his skillsas a dancer,Cap was generousin sharing
his artisticskills,designingthe backdropsfor 'Stetfany:Allof Me'and the tailgateparties,and a memorableseriesof
T-shirtsfor our Cazaderoretreats.

I hope all of you that went to
Conventionhave returnedsafely and
broughtback many fond memories. I
knowthat this will be one Convention
that I will neverforget. The Friday
afternoonGrand March seem to set
the tone for the weekend.lt was
energetic,excitingand filledwith
emotion.The weekendgave me
chanceto see many old friendsand
to make some new ones. This
Conventionwas also one of the most
emotionaltimes of my life. Sunday
Brunchbegan typicallyenough with
the GeneralMembershipmeetingand
some entertainment by Ms.
l'.4ccleena, the l-1cnkyTonk Queen.
Then Freemanoresentedthe
medallionsfor recognitionof ten
years of attendanceat Convention.
As I sat there watch those thirty or so
peoplereceivetheir medallions,I was
filledwith emotion. Theirvery
presencewas a major achievement.
By the time Skip presentedFreeman
with his medallion,I was all
teary-eyedand emotional.
After this, Lauro came up to present
the Golden Boot Award in Keith
Snowden'smemory. As he talked
about Keith,he broughtback
memoriesof times I had sharedwith
Keith. Then Lauroannouncedmy
name and those of Stan B. and BillS.
from Sacramento. Those of you that
were there know exactly how totally
overcomeI was. I don't remember
gettingto the stage (but I remember
that when I returnedto my seat, I had
wads of kleenexstuck in all my
pockets).This was an incredible
honor! My heart stillfillswith emotion
wheneverI think aboutthat moment.
With so many people that have
dedicatedso much of their livesto
gay squaredancing,it will be difficult
to choosenext yea/s recipient(s).
However,I know that we willdo our
left to us by my friend Keith.
Purple 93
The Basic class which began in June
is now going strong. lf you haven't
alreadymet them, pleasetake the
time to stop by and say 'hi.' They
are a lot of fun. You will also have
the opportunityto meet the class
members at a receDtionto be held on
Saturday,August 14. This will be at
Tom Tripp'shouse. A flyer with
details is enclosedin this news letter.
Club membersshouldbringa dish to
share. Everyoneshouldbringtheir
own beverage.
As instructors,Don and I are working
hard to make their class a fun.
interesting,and challenging
experience. Both of us appreciate
their indulgenceas we work to
improveour own skillswhileteaching
them new ones.

Severalof you have expressedan
interestin a Plus class. As a result,
we will begin a class on Monday,
August 9th. Classeswill be held at
EVRC from 7:30 to 9:30. So staft
plqnningyour scheduleand we'llsee
you there.
Be Ruognfued!
On Saturday,August21st, we will
have our secondannualrecognition
dinner. This is chanceto recognize
the effortsof the many peoplewho
have worked to help make Western
Star successful. lt takes a lot of
people'shelp in orderto get things
done and this is a way to say thanks.
It will be held at St. Paulus'Church at
7:30. Art Bradleywill coordinatea
pot luck. Pleasecall him at let him
know what you will bring. lf you don't

This year's retreatto Camp Caz will
be held over the weekend of October
22ndto 24th. As a specialtreat this
year, we have made arrangements
for 2 callers. They will be Terry
Kephan (from San Antonio)andNate
Bliss (from NorthernCalifornia). Nate
has calledfor us many times over the
years, includingseveralof the earlier
retreats. Terry calls regularlyfor the
Alamo City Wranglers in San Antonio.
It promisesto be a very lively
weekendfor all. Our Purple'93 class
membersare very much encouraged
to attend.

On Saturday, November20th, WSD
will have its second annual Craft Fair.
Any WSD member (or theirfriend)is
encouragedto participate. Vendors
will pay a $25 fee and 10% of their
receiots. This will be a fund raiserfor
the Westem Star InsuranceFund.

members. But some of our membersare
extra special because they have dedicated

As does the theater, Westem Star is in
constant need of someone to watch the door,
guard the cash box, staff the refreshment

There is only one article of 'Westem Star
Wear' which is consideredto be official--the
Westem Star vest. lts design requires
someone to coordinateevery aspect of its
creation. lt also requirespeople to help cut,

time and requiresa great deal of patience.

completelygone, my life is changing. I will be
retumingto school in Novemberto pursue a
career goal. This will be a long term

fair in Iate November or early December.
What we need now is people who would like to make
some extra money for Christmas by selling their items at
the fair. Tables wilL cosc $25.00 plus 10e, of your receipts.
We already have some knitters, wood workers, silk flower
makers, needle worker and candy makers busily at work. But
the more the merrier ! ! ! However, there is a limit as to the
number of tables we can set up & still move around the room.

A specialThank You to all who
made Camo Caz anotherwonderful
experience. lt is always one of my lavorite
eventsthat we do. lt symbolizesthe three
thingsthat make WSD such a greatclub -
Dancing,Teachingand Socializing. Boy
did we socialize.
There were three dances; Friday
night,a Masked Ball on Saturdaynight and
a last Gasp Dance Sunday attemoon.
: Blissand Terry Kephartdid some
wundertulcalling. The workshopswere
very helpful. Terry had a Plus workshop,
that was even attendedby our Basic class
members. Nate providedsome casllingfor
advanceddancersand gave a Mirror
lmageworkshopfor everyone.
On Saturday,Marie and Kathy
held a Mask making Workshop. This was
a definitehit and many fantasticmasks
tumed up at the Masked Ball that evening.
One of the definitehits was the
Boardof Director'sSoiree that was given
Saturdayafternoon. Fresh Prawns, Pate,
Oysters on the half shell, Egg Rolls, and
Cheeses accompanied by either
non-alcohoficbeverages or Beer,
Screwdrivers, Sea Breezes, or Cape
Cods...Ar1Bradleywas in charge and did a
Fabulousjob. Thanks to Art and the
Board.
The cabin decorationswere once
againspectacular. Specialmentionto the
Most Holy Cow School at the Sacred Lady
of the Moonshine.The Sistersand

e underthe guidanceof Miss Ruby

rowdy and anarchyprevailedas they

Although the attendance was way
down this year, there was a very high
energy and lots ol creativity. A special

MEMBEROF THE MONTH
As you know,I willbe selectinga
member of the month each month. This
month's Member of the month is AIt
Bnadley, a real worker,a great cook, and
an untiringmember of WSD. At the Levi's,
Leatherand Lace Dance, he cut his wrist
on a broken bottle as he was unloading
sodas. Did this deter him? No, he went to
the UCSF EmergencyRoom, had a few
stitches,and retumedto dance a few tips
before the end of the dance. Art was
Camp Caz Counselorthis year, and was
responsiblefor the lavishspread put out at
the Board Party Saturdayaftemoon. He
did a wonderfuljob. In fact any
undertakingArt pursues,tums out well.
He has been our unofficialsoda personfor
the last few years, luggingthe chests and
sodas to all our functions. Att has also
been on the WSD Board of Directorsfor
the past year. Art assuredthe Board at
the last meetingthat he will continueto
work in some capacityfor the club. lt is
with heartfett appreciationthat I say
