Afewyearsago,RedwoodCityusedthelinethat“carsand bikesdon’tmix”andpavedoverapaththatgoesaroundtheShores.Thispathwasamulti-usepathwithasolepurposetokeepthecyclistsawayfromthecars.Unfortunately,manycyclistshaverefusedtousethisandprefer tooftenrideintandem,whichblockcarsthataredrivingalongRedwoodShoresParkway.TheyaretooclosetothecarsandthisisanaccidentwaitingtohappenRedwoodCitydecidedtocrowdthecarlanesbymakingthemclosertogetherwithnoroomforanyonetobe“reckless”or “inattentive”.However,Ihavepersonallyseenmoreinattentive-ness,withcarscomingintomylanewhiletheyhavenoideathattheyaredoingso.Notagoodthing,foranothercar,andespe-ciallyforacyclist.Thefewpublicvotesthatwereconsideredfor thenarrowerlanes,werefromcycliststhatDON”TevenliveinRedwoodShores,orevenRedwoodCity.IattendedthosemeetingsandtheEngineeringDepartmentwouldnotevencon-sidertheinherenthazards.AlongRedwoodShoresParkway,betweenShellParkwayandHwy101,therearealreadytoomanystopsignsandlights.Thisisapproximately1¼miles,yetithas3stopsignsand4trafficlights.Thisisa“Parkway”,notalane,buttheCitywishestomakethisroadadriver’snightmare.Sincethelightsarenotsyn-chronized,onemustusuallystopforeachsignandlight,whichcausestraffictobackupandtheadditionalroadragethatgoesalongwiththis.Iseemanypeoplespeedupinthehopesofget-tingthroughthenextlight.And,thiscausesredlightrunners,whichisanotherthreat.Inaddition,Iwitnessonadailybasis,carsthatdon’tstoporbarelystopatstopsigns.Insteadofcreatingasaferstreetbyimplementingthesignsandlights,RedwoodCityhascreatedahugehazard.StudiesinEuropehaveproventhatifadriverhastousetheirsensestomaneuveratrickydrivingarea,itismuchsaferthaniftheyputinstopsignsandotherimpediments.Drivers,cyclistsandpedestri-ansoverlyrelyonastopsignoralightfortheirsafety.Ihaveseenpeopleeven“dare”acartohitthembywalkingdirectlyintotraffic,expectingthecartostopforthem.And,mostcyclistsgothroughstopsigns.Stopsignsdonotsavelives.Theycreateinattentiveness,wastegas,increasetrafficandpollutionandcausemorewearandtear onyourbrakes.IfRedwoodShoresParkwaywerenotalreadyoverloadedwithsignsandlights,IwouldagreethatastopsignmightbenecessaryatCringle.But,wedonotneedanothersignforthisshortstretchofroadway.Everyoneneedstotakerespon-sibilityfortheirowndriving,cyclingandwalkingbehavior.LOOKFIRST…Don’tgetafalsesenseofsafetyjustbecausethereisacrosswalkorastopsign.Ifyoudon’tpayattention,don’texpecttheotherpersonto.

RegardingstopsignsinRWS.Iwouldlikeoneatthecornerof DavitLaneandMarlin.Whencarsareparkedontheeastsideof MarlinitisdifficulttoseecarscomingbeforemakingaleftturnintoMarlinfromthestopsignonDavit.Andthecarsaregoingmorethanthe25milelimit!Maybeyoucanmentionastopsignthereandgetfeedback.IalsoconcuraboutthedesirabilityofastopsignaCringle/RWSParkway.Inevercrosstherebecauseof thefasttraffic.,flashingyellowlightornot.Regardingthecommentsaboutdogsoff-leachonthedikesandtheriskoffinesifseenbyapoliceofficerorwildlifeofficer,Ihaveyettoseeeitheroneofthemeverduringmy28yearshere,thelastfewyearswalkingthedikesalmostdaily!Atleast25-30%ofalldogsbeingwalkedareoff-leash!!Iamencouragedbythepromiseoflessgeesedroppingsinourpublicareasandplaygroundsaswellassidewalks/paths.Itislongoverdue.Happyholidays...ARWSresidentDearEditorIreadwithinterestthearticleregardingRSCA’sdesiretoputastopsignatCringle,despitefeedbackfromCityEngineersthatitwasnotwarranted,andthefollowuplettersfromvariousresidentsofCringle.Mr.McGowanhaditrightwhenhesaidthatthemajorityofresidentsneverhavetoturnleftontoRWSParkway,andthereforethemajoritydonotwanttohaveastopsign.IactuallydeliberatelychosenottoliveonthesouthsideofRWSPkwywhenImovedheremanyyearsagoasIhadnodesiretomakeadailyleftturnacrossthewidethoroughfare,and,no,Idonotwantastopsigntheretoday.StopsignsandspeedbumpstobottlepeopleupinRedwoodShoresisnotasolution.RWSPkwyisnotatwo-laneroad(itisastonishingthepeoplethatpersistinwalkingandpushingbabystrollersONtheroad)andRWSisnotaquietbackwaterneighborhoodofafewstreets.Therearemanyresidentsandbusi-nessesinthiscommunityandtheyhavealegitimateneedtogetinandoutoftheShoresinatimelyfashion.IbelievethatatrafficLIGHTwouldbeabetterchoice.AstopsigngivesequalprioritytoRWSPkwyandCringle,whichisclearlyinappropriate.90%ofthetime,thereisnotrafficatCringle.AtrafficlightcouldbesettoremaingreenforRWSPkwyunlesstherewasapedestrianoracaratCringle.Iwouldsuggestchangingthe4waystopatRWSPkwyandBridgetoatrafficlightaswell.Therearesomanylanesoftraffictherethatitisdifficulttoassesswhoseturnisnext.Finally,I’dliketosaythatitisinappropriatefortheRSCA/

toespouseasolution(stopsign)whichisopposedbythemajor-ityofresidentsata4:1ratio.RSCAissupposedtobeacom-munityassociationbutyouarenotrepresentingthecommunity’swishes.
