EAGLE BEER BUST
The lundraiserat the SF eagleon Sunday,January2
was quite a success,raisingover $700.00for us and the
same amountfor StayingHealthyWith HlV. lt was a lot
of fun and the crowd was tremendous.Everyonethere
had a good time and some peoplemade new friends.
PLUS CLASS
Our new Plus Classbeginson February7, with Ron
Maskerreturninglo WesternStar as Instructor.We
regretlhat Don Grecocan not leach on Mondays,but
cerlainlyapprecialelhe greatjob he did with the Purple
class. There is still a need for Angels,so come on down

Bust on January2, 1994,membersof Western
Star raised seven hundredtwenty six dollarsand
fifty cents ($726.50)to help us in our effortsto
educatepeoplewith HIV/AIDSaboutoptionsfor
supportingtheir health. As membersol WSD,
our gratitudelo our fellowclub membersis
deeply felt. we do regretthat we were unablelo
helpwith the work and join in lhe fun, due to prior
plans.
The missionol StayingHealthywith HIV is to
educatepeoplewilh HIV/AIDSabouthealth
promotingtrealmentsthat can improvetheir
healthand qualityof life. Many optionsare
available,but limitedaccessto informationmakes
treatmentchoicesdifficult.We presentseminars
that empower participantslo lake charge of their
healthcare and establisha personalizedheallh
program. The seminarsprovideinformationand
facilitatedecisionmakingaboutcomplimentary,
allernativeand holistictreatmentoptionsthat are
availablenow, often at very low cost and with
demonslratedelfecliveness. We have also

AustralianClub:
As many of you may already know, we have
been contacted by a club in New Soulh Wales,
Australia,which has been lounded by a man
namedStuartMauchline.lt is a club which grew
oul of an HIV+ social group, and has expandedto
the general gay populationol the area (10 hours
from Sidney and 2 hours from Brisbane- go
ligure!).
The club is planningto applyfor IAGSDC
membershipat this yea/s conventionin
Washington. The members,however,have little
or no discretionaryfunds, as many live on
governmentpensions,or, in Stuart'scase, is the
primary caregiverof a person livingwith
AiDS/HlV and has littleincome.
A ticket from Auslraliato WashingtonDC
would cost approximately$1,500.00. That is out
ol Stuart's budget at this point in time, as it is out
ol the Associalion'sbudget AND jurisdiction.
To this end, however,Darrell Ertzbergerand I
are making a complelelyad hoc requestof each
of lhe member clubs to hold some kind of
fundraiserto buy Sluart a ticket and allow him to
present his club for membershippersonally.
Darrell and I appreciateyour club's efforts and

Parade is on June 19. We will also be having a

Quilt Panels on Display
Attention is called to an exhibit of Names Project
quilt panels now on view at the Center for the Arts
Galleries and Forum in Yerba Buena Gardens (at
Mission and 3rd Streets) through June 261h.
lncluded are panels for Western Slar members
Cap Anderson (a.k.a. Cap Moran) and Keith
Bishop. The panel in Cap's memory includes his
TOshirtdesigns for many of our Cazaderoretreats.
Western Star members Freeman Stamper, Mimi
Mueller,ChelseaBaylorand Russ King are among
those who worked on the panel, together with
lriends from Cap's clogging and Scottish country
danceactivities.
Both panels are in the mezzaninelevel part of lhe
display. lt is not necessary to enler the paid
admissionarea of the gallery lo see them; simply
go up lhe stairs near the main entrance,adjacent
to the lront glass wall. Regularmuseumhours are

are really ambitious every Monday. We have

"Square Dancing from the G"y
Community" come to the S.F. Free Folk
Festival
The San Francisco Free Folk Festival is an annual
2-day event combining dance and music
workshops with informal concerts. Although a
predominantly'straight' event, one of the Festival
organizers has invited Western Star member and
caller Ron Hirsch to do a one-hour workshop on
"squaredance lrom the gay community"as part of
their schedulefor the first time this year. lt will be
like a fast-paced introductoryclass (most people
attending the workshops have prior dance
experience, and usually catch on pretty quickly).
Anyone who would like to 'angel' (and perhaps
check oul some of the other workshops before and
afier the square-dancing)is encouragedto attend.
The 18th Annual Free Folk Festivalwill be held on

SaturdayJune 11 and SundayJune at the John
Adams Campus of City College (old Lowell High),
1860 Hayes Street at Masonic, starting al noon
both days. Ron's workshop will be on Sunday lrom

One of my lavorite evenls is the annual Fourthof
July Picnicat Angellsland,whichthis year will fall
on July 23. We all meet at Pier43Yz andtake the
Ferryover to Angel lsland. Once on the island,we
picnic,dance,relax,dancein the water,play
softballor volleyball,dance in the sand, relax,play
cards,dance on asphaltand just generalfyhave a
good time. We hope lo see many of our new class
membersat this social.

The new class is going quite well. The membership
is now set and its lairly large with lots of eager
dancers.The WelcomePot Luck dinnerwillbe held
at GoldenBoot Ranch in early August.

Well, Stonewall 25
and Convention
are over and
everyone seems to
have made it back
to the cool climate
of the Bay Area.
New York was
hot, humid and
crowded. lsaw more peopleJrom herethan I
see at home. The closing ceremony for Gay
Games lV was spectacular. The marches (under
estimated in attendance) were long and fun. All
in all, it was quite a celebration.
C o n v e n t i o nw a s , a s u s u a l , t h e h i g h l i g h to f a n y
S q u a r e D a n c e r ' sy e a r . T h e r e w a s D a n c i n g ,
Schmoozing, Gossiping, Partying, and even some
important business getting done. lt was really
great seeing so many friends from all over the
country. So, make your plans to attend the
Chicago Convention next Memorial Day
Weekend. Stars & Squares Foreverwill be
remembered as the convention where we all said
Good-bye to our beloved(?)Steffany Stamper.

The Awards
Dance was quite
successful. lt was
a real pleasure to
see so many
friends enjoying
great calling. The
attendance was
not as great as I was hoping, but it was great
dancing to our local/club callers. I really enjoyed
giving the awards and want everyone that I
appreciate each and every member of this club.
A special congratulations to every recipient. The
complete list will be in the next Quarterly
Selection,which will be out soon.
MEMBER OF THE MONTH
August Member of the Month is Jim
Anderson. Jim is a recent addition to WSD, but
is very active. Last year at Camp Caz, Jim said
he would be interested in working for the club.
Well, I took him at his word and when the data
base manager position became available,Jim
was asked. He has been taking care of the
DBase every since. Jim is also responsiblefor
the Directory. He also coordinated the
Valentine Dance. A huge Yellow Rock for
Member of the Month for August, Jim
Anderson.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Ballots for the new Board will be in the
mailsoon. (You may already have them)
Pleasevote for the candidates of your choice.
This is your club, so choose your candidates
with care and vote for someone who will
represent you well. I think we have a fine list
and all of them deserve a place on the Board.
CAMP CAZ
Camp Cazadero is just a month away. We
need everyone to hurry up and register. This

year we are offering a special deal of $85 for the
weekend. This is a great deal and it should be
an especiallyfun year. Andy Shore is a great
caller and will be lots of fun. Mike and Jim have
promised an all new improved camp with lots of
surprises.
There are many more activities already
scheduled, and many more in the formulating
stages. So, my hopes for the New Year is that
we willall continue to be healthy, active in the
club, stop the back biting and bickering, and
above all DON'T STOP.DON'T SLOW DOWN!
ANGEL ISLAND
Many of us took the journey to Angel lsland.
The Basic Class was well represented by 6
members. They danced, had fun, and are now
eligible for many dangles. The gossip is
endless, but just let me say that there were
many other clubs represented; Midnight
Squares,Foggy Gity, ElCamino. El Diablo,and
Sacramento. We really had a wonderfultime.
Thank you, Jim Pellmanfor making this a
wonderfulday in the sun. A specialThanksto
Ron Masker for making the non-square dancers
feelwanted.

The last Camp Caz is now behind
us. lt was a memorableeventin
every way. The hard work put in by
the Camp Coordinators, Mike
Sellers,Jim Pellman,and Lee
Gianfrancesco,was certainly
evidencedby the lavishnessof
every thing. For thosewho missed
it, l'm sure you will be hearingabout
it for years to come. And of course
those of us who attendedcan dine
out the storiesforever. Just ask
anyonewhat their favoritemoment
was and I'm sure you will get sixty
differentanswers.
The Coordinators surprizedeveryonewith a daily newspaperthat
printedGossip,GossipGossip! And then Mike and Jim emceed
the show to end all shows,The Mr. and Mz Camp Caz Contest.
Mr. and Mz. this year were Felix(SophieWhinestein)and Ron
(Pookie).Unfortunately since they are the last they will reign
forever.
A long time member and hard worker, Rod Morrellpassed away
recently. Rod served on the Board of Directors,was Arch Angel
of the Earthquake(Purple '89 ) class, was a tireless decorator,
and loved to performat Club LaStar. He was also famous for his
colorfulshirts. There will be a memorialservice for him on
SundayNovember13 at 3:30 pm at TempleUnitedMethodist
Church,1'l11 JuniperoSera Blvd. at Beverly.Ron Maskerwill call
a Memorialtip. Fingerfoods would be appreciated.Anyone
